Development Update 1 - June

By the way, could you say something about Powerplay? There are no Odyssey PP actions yet and there's very notable issues - some powers incorrectly high CC, others have missing CC, and Odyssey population changes haven't been accounted into existing control systems base incomes, they're only being accounted on new expansions.

Dont count your chickens on PP, They have been avoiding questions and work on that part of the game for years

I guess this means I need to wait till tomorrow to see if they actually fixed the Acceleration White skin.

Horizon vs. Odyssey. 🤮

I understand that you paid for a skin, I did it and I even have FC, I have a corvette kit ect, but let's be real damn once, the status of the DLC is more important than a damn skin, you have paid, ok, but the game goes like the and the priority is the game not a damn skin

Sorry, all times been spent this month on previewing tomorrows stream with the same information.

I think it would be easier to extract holy texts from the Vatican than getting FD to talk and take action with Powerplay.

Well it sounds like a good start. Very keen on seeing the UI changes for outfitting tomorrow, I pray we're gonna get something as good as, or even better than what we have in Horizons.

Also big thumbs-up on actually bringing in the Issue Tracker on this. Allows us players to choose what we want news on in a way, I hope you'll keep this one!
For the next time, it'd be cool if you could look at the top-voted issues in general, not only those in the dedicated Odyssey section, to give older issues a chance. That's assuming the results would change with that, if the Odyssey stuff is top-voted overall as well, I've nothing to say.

Oh, boi!
The great devopment update.

tl;dr
Safe introduction - "All is subject to changes"(they do not commit to anything said). Excuses that launching a product unfit for release interrupts their planning. Reminder that they brought us many fixes and improvements including the patch tomorrow, but it's time to move on console release.

P. S. Few years ago I thought wargaming were bad at community management and development involvement. How silly was I 😔

Greetings Commanders,

We would like to share with you our first monthly development update since the launch of Elite Dangerous Odyssey. The purpose of these monthly news articles is to give a regular, moment in time, updates on how development within Elite Dangerous is progressing. The aim is to a provide a factual look at community requested features, issues, and a look forward at what the team are working on next.

Please note: the nature of these updates will be ‘warts-and-all’; you will likely see work in progress screenshots and content taken from WIP builds. That means that all information and assets shared are subject to change.

We will be looking to share more information on development challenges as well as talking about progress that has been made in other areas. Making games requires a large number of people working closely and in sync. There will always be a need to prioritise and focus development efforts on specific features and content for the biggest benefit of our wider community. Despite an incredible team, we simply wouldn’t ever have enough time to add all the awesome things that are requested by the community. As such, we hope that by being open about these requests, we can avoid giving the wrong expectations and everyone can be informed and up to date with where development is at that time.

So let’s get started…

June Update

Since this launch we have had to adjust our focus and the development team have been working incredibly hard to review and address as many reports and issues as possible. We have done this through a number of early hotfixes and a subsequent series of five game updates, including the one that will be deployed tomorrow.

Throughout these five updates we have made over a thousand changes, fixes, and additions to Odyssey based on your feedback, including in key areas such as:
  • Lighting, brightness and gamma
  • Character and Outfitting UI
  • Galaxy Map navigation and found organic data tracking
  • Performance – We know there is more to do here, but we are pleased to see some players reporting notable improvements for particular configurations
So, what is next for Odyssey?

As previously stated, Update Five will be deployed tomorrow and will deliver on more key areas of focus and feedback that we have received. These include:
  • Shared missions – allowing you to work together with other Commanders on the ground and share mission rewards

  • Overhauled cockpit lighting

  • Visual improvements for neutron stars
  • Redesign of ship outfitting interface
  • Rebalanced drop rates for rare items
Issue Tracker
Another area we like to keep an eye on is our Issue Tracker. This allows us to see and measure the key issues within the community, as voted for by you. We know that many of you are keen to have an update on the top issues. So we’ve listed out the top five items below and given some direct thoughts and feedback on each one of them.

Current Top Five:
  1. Improvements to lighting (https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/33174)
    • Many of the lighting issues have been improved across previous updates, the last major set relate to the update of ship cockpits which will be in Update 5. We will continue to monitor your feedback.
  2. Degraded terrain textures compared to Horizons (https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/32854)
    • Pathways have been identified to improve this and a team is actively working on this area.
  3. Planetary features that appear to repeat (https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/34834)
    • We understand this is an important topic within the community. As mentioned at the start of the article, we want to share the challenges as well as the positives. Investigations are still ongoing, however, it must be said that this is proving to be a very significant technical challenge. At the current time we do not have a workable solution. BUT, investigations will continue and we will keep you updated.
  4. Anarchy factions and the BGS (https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/35479)
    • After extensive investigation we found that missions against anarchy factions were too impactful and this has been addressed. We are making further tweaks with Update 5 and will continue to monitor this issue closely to see if further action is required.
  5. FPS performance in Odyssey
    • Pathways have also been identified with performance and the team are actively working on this area.
Future Progress: The Longer Roadmap

As mentioned in our previous post, our aim was to focus on the initial set of updates and then turn our attention back onto console. There’s no doubt that the additional development work on these updates and community requests pose a challenge on our previous plans and timelines. We are actively investigating, reviewing, and remeasuring the further roadmap but these things will take a little time. We understand that this may not be as much information as people may have wished for, but we hope that the open and transparent nature of this update means that you’ll bear with us while we pull those together. What we can say, is that through these monthly updates, we will be able to share and keep you informed every step of the way.

Livestream

As you may have seen from the weekly schedule, I will be jumping into Elite Dangerous tomorrow and playing through the most recent update with Bruce. Please come along and join us where we can discuss today’s update.

And as usual: Powerplay not a priority. How many years should we wait to see the much requested (and promised in the past) redesign? Another 6 years? Maybe another game at all? You know: we've got communities (or what's left of what they used to be) that still wait for something, anything.

And we are quite tired.

I rather preferred the darkened cockpits, it was kind of like that old request for a ship cockpit light toggle had actually happened. The excessive glare in spots did need some work, but overall it was better...

Do you drive at night with your interior lights on?

Appreciate the update, thank you.

You've touched on two major pillars, re: lighting, and performance, but there's a bigger issue that hasn't been officially addressed (that I've seen?) regarding there being an issue concerning the rendering pipeline being messed up during the various stages of processing and displaying the image on screen. There were a couple of fairly detailed threads on the subject a few weeks ago, which provided some fairly extensive analysis of the process, though they eventually got buried.

From there it seemed apparent that something was going awry relating to the image data format or gamma being pre-multiplied where it shouldn't, or, I'm not entirely sure, resulting in a lot of the issues we have with the galaxy appearing way too dark, and more glaringly (or lack of), the HUD being quite noticeably much darker than it is in Horizons. The HUD is an emissive surface, and yet it appears dull and low brightness, even at the max setting. The bloom pass no longer gets applied to it either.

Any official word on that would be great. I know everyone has their own pet issues, but this one does literally concern everything you see on the screen and there have been a few updates to try and correct for it, without addressing the actual root issue?
^^^ Very much this.

The number 1 issue for what is after all a video game. The visuals.

I'm amazed it wasn't picked up during playtesting actually. Surely some of the Alpha testers must have noticed how dim it all was?

7 years ago, it was part of their vision.

it was even stated that all assets and ships were modeled and built in such a way that make it possible to add it later on.

fastforward to Odyssey, "we have no plans" and "we need to rework the whole game to add them" so both statements by M. Braben was a complete and utter . and if plans change why not communicate it with us?

after Odyssey and the way they talk about the game and what's next, do you really think they will be adding atmospheric planets? LOL... that would be so much more work than ship interiors.
Ship interiors would(should) add a lot of ways to interact with ship.
IMHO it would make no sense to implement it only to Oddysey as it would break gameplay for non-EDO players.

Adding atmospheric planets doesn't seem like something impacting previous versions of the game.
Those would be only accessible by EDO players and would not break EDH players experience.

Adding ship interiors that are not only used for walking and taking photos but have meaningful gameplay mechanics seems like a challenge to me.
On the other hand, I would really like it if FDev would try to put up with this challenge and maybe come up with something great.
Maybe adding limited on foot options only inside ship interiors for EDH players would be a solution?
