Development Update 1 - June

Its weird, I'm reading through this thread and and at the same time in the background, I've got QA's latest video playing on the TV.

It's for Star Citizen:

Right from the off he's like "Star Citizen has some amazing looking planets...."

Later on he actually walks out of his ship and onto the planet surface.

Meanwhile, the copy-and-paste for EDO planets is still work in progress, weeks after initial release.

Elite may have the flight model right, but for everything else other space games are leaving it for dead.
Fdev should change the nale of Obsician orbital.

That's not actually what it says.
No, it says this:

Investigations are still ongoing, however, it must be said that this is proving to be a very significant technical challenge. At the current time we do not have a workable solution. BUT, investigations will continue and we will keep you updated.

So what do you think that means? Weeks after release?

"we will keep you updated" - yeah, heard that before for Powerplay, Multi-crew etc etc.

So... higher than G1 mats at geo sites then. Where does that fit in? Perhaps it'll come tomorrow.
Maybe the galaxy map button on the accept mission screen will work again. Maybe NPC crew will stop disappearing after the player's death even though we pay a fee to keep them on the rebuy screen. Maybe Overloaded Munitions will work as intended an no longer do +50% damage...

I get the impression that it is worth many hundreds of millions of $US for the first to get a 'full' game out of the door.
If UE5 can deliver this with minimum effort (as implied) then studios would be cutting their throats to grab the $$$ from SC, NMS & ED, surely?

You are spot-on accurate, it is a niche market with very little value (in comparison to the 'massive' AAA titles) so big studios are unwilling to risk their capital. Even SC has managed to keep their alpha going for 10 years, and produce a roadmap for the next 3 that doesn't include a 'launch', but no doubt will continue to sell promises of cake tomorrow.

Odyssey, and the absolutely empty information vessel (sorry Arf!) put on the table today, sounds as if it is in an even worse state than I believed (and I haven't been over kind) and still nothing is being said with any value - except that "all our great ideas" (none of which are cited as example!) would take too long to incorporate into the game, and that there is so much fixing of Odyssey content that it is likely to exceed the 'budgeted' time to get it on console.

Being utterly negative, perhaps Odyssey should be dropped, and ED run down over the next year - then see if some other studio wants to create a UE5 version.
kinda how I felt today o7

Can we talk download-times maybe? I'm sitting here with a 160sek download for 3, in words three, data items; It's not like we need them in the 10s per mod we wanna engineer? Who came up with the Idea that it would be great to have people WAIT for minutes in order to loot an item?
It's not as if finding the stuff were difficult enough, no, sombody went and said to themself: "I got this! Let's make them not just hard do find, let's people also have waste their time by staring at a screen for 2 minutes while absolutely nothing happens!"
What is this? Windows-Update simulator or something?

So what you are saying is she has move on with her life without addressing or fixing the problems with Elite Dangerous Odyssey, perhaps we should all just move on from Elite Dangerous.
I think he's saying she's entitled to have some of her time not dedicated to addressing people about her job, on account of the fact she doesn't work 24/7 any more than the rest of us do. Which is y'know - entirely fair and non-controversial. Unless you're a completely obsessional lunatic.

Heres SC planets, enjoy.

... and so how many studios are about to release epic ED scale games on UE5 in the next year?
If it is so easy, why isn't this happening?

The scale of ED is in the galaxy, which I ferverently hope is not being done in the engine and is being done on a database somewhere and a routine exists in the engine to pass in a system ID and get all info for that single system.

Yes, yes, it is so easy. The hard part is the graphics. ED is amazing graphically (leaving aside the odyssey UI and visual overhaul). The ships and system representation are very very good!

To break it down the engine handles the drawing of the scene, the movement of you and others within it, atmosperics, NPCs. BGS, Missions, Trading are all done outside the engine. All this is plain to see in 'other games' drawing systems etc etc

Why is no one doing it on ED's scale? Why would they? It's all been done before. Fdevs 2 main competitors are doing it, one with only one system but with more depth of gameplay, and the other with a tiny developmenty team is doing everything ED does and a whole lot more, excepy for the BGS, making fdev look like a joke. And let's be honest here, the BGS have never worked right.

And futher to those 2, many others are using U5 and Unity to build space games.

About two years ago I had a go at this just to see how it all went together in Unity. I downloaded the CSVs and within a day had them offloaded into an MSSQL DB. 2 further days had me jumping from system to system and placing 'planets' where they should be. The entire exercise showed me that I am useless at graphics, leaving aside the BGS, the rest is donkey work, ED lives off it's graphics.

Am I seeing this wrong? The shield strength indication on the HUD in the "fixed" lighting snapshots still show this off-color blue/green that doesn't match the rest of the in-game Blue hues. Just switch to analysis mode and you can clearly see the disparity - this was not the case in Horizons. Is this an artistic change? Because it doesn't look good...

Edit: I should acknowledge that the other interior lighting changes are welcome... It's just that most of the time, we're looking in first-person at the HUD and context panels, which have clashing colors.

The problem is not your comment or you, the problem begins when you put a link from the problem tracker so that people vote for something that should be at the end of the list, there are people who cannot play directly and in the problem tracker have is one or 30 posts of skins above covering the real problem
Then perhaps you should have just said that from the beginning. I do not read minds very well. Even less so over the internet. It's not like the issue is going to be taken care of anytime soon at this rate unless it gets fixed tomorrow. So hey, we're all in a bad place with Oddy. Geezus, if you wanted me to remove the link, you could have just said that and not been a jerk about it.
