Development Update 1 - June

half the critical posts have been removed?
They only remove what can spill over into an uncontrollable riot. While we are politely indignant, we can stay in this barrack and snot bubbles, puffing diligently. As soon as someone writes a message that can find more specific support from the community, which may entail damage to the company, they destroy it and issue warnings "maybe someone has already been banned", this is me about all sorts of topics about lawsuits in courts for unfair attitude to the obligations of the manufacturer, deliberate misrepresentation of users and the sale of a low-quality product. Otherwise, everything is fine. All just great.

I have a 2070s, and the rest of my rig is worse than his. A lot worse. And I get way better performance in almost 4k (4k, SS=.85), between high and ultra. His report is kinda baffling.
As I understand things frame rate problems are random from system to nearly-identical system and sometimes relatively mediocre systems are getting better performance than God-PCs.

David Braben did basically already state that this issue is kinda baffling to FDEV (when he said that it runs well on his 2014 PC).

Presumably it runs really nicely on all the machines they have access to and (giving the benefit of the doubt) they were genuinely surprised to hear some of the reports of poor performance.

That one of the things I remember they worked on at hello games for NMS, they created a program that randomly show the devs planets that the game generate, which they then could put through some basic checks,. If Frontier has such a system it would have shown them such bugs or flaws in the design of their terrain generation system.
You're also making the assumption they test the game at all.

I think this is due to the complex mechanisms for generating textures, which in themselves are heavy for the equipment and do not seem to be a good solution for introducing into a system of this scale (working with multi-level recreation of a huge universe), besides this, such generation can respond differently to equipment that has specific features. Some video cards and processors have subtleties in their architecture that may conflict with the technology used. Some old ones can perform it more efficiently due to specialization, and new ones, in the absence of such, do not use their capacity efficiently and waste the resource doing a lot of unnecessary work, or forcing part of the capacity to stand idle "closed" in the course of this process.

Or maybe Braben, when he was testing, was connected to the remote desktop of a supercomputer from CERN, and he really did not notice any lags.

Some at least, seems like the mods went astroturfing after someone called a mod out on being a bit rude.
I think they just went to bed. They don't play elite. They have nothing to worry about and they respect their time to everything, "they need to rest, otherwise the work schedule will get lost."
You should not look for any deep reasons in everything. It's usually easier than we think.

Planetary features that appear to repeat..

ok so let me explain this since no one actually plays the game .. this dosetn acatually happen what happens is people go on reddit and post the heatmap of the planets and them they say the terrain repets.. its obvius the elite dangerous community is casual and dosent get ships past the cobra let alone leave the starter systems so they upvote it on reddit lol... the person that is trying to farm karma on reddit with posting (yes they are posts) is just on the hate banwaggon anyway. so

so in conclusion to the 3rd point ...
  • We understand this is an important topic within the community. As mentioned at the start of the article, we want to share the challenges as well as the positives. Investigations are still ongoing, however, it must be said that this is proving to be a very significant technical challenge. At the current time we do not have a workable solution. BUT, investigations will continue and we will keep you updated.
this wont be fixed because it dosent happen so devs insted of wasting time on someting that dosent happen stop it . stop listening to the people that dont play the game and just watch funny youtubers thatt on the game for hate viwes and y youtube/patreon money .. and actually adress the problems in the game ..

2 Degraded terrain textures compared to Horizons (https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/32854)
  • Pathways have been identified to improve this and a team is actively working on this area
your gona gona improve performance here because the forum dads that have gtxs 650s and intel dual core cpus that have 4 gigs of ddr 3 ram runing at 1200hz cant load the testures ... this is gona keep happening. btw to the forum dads that say they are goan go for sc good luck runing the game with your specs lol

5 FPS performance in Odyssey
  • Pathways have also been identified with performance and the team are actively working on this area.
not happening btw your gona be able to realse the dlc on the console .. unless its the pro versions .. you know why .. unless you legit delete the engine overhaull you did to odssy and derectly back the fps gameplay to horizons you are out of luck and even them i doubt performance is goan improve in the 12v12s frontline solutions.. performance is fine for people with gtxs 1050 tis that run the game on medium at 720p (its more powerfull tham the ps4s gpu )so unless you do some serius programing on optimasation nothing is gona change . so its a waste of time and dev time . anywyas you should focus on content theres minum bugs etc . no point in pretending the game is a buggy mess when its not . and its time to stop pretending youtubers or influencers have any say on anythign when clearly they dont play the game or trash the game for youtube viwes and keep playing the game lol..

with that sayd . focus on content rather them non problems . at this point its a waste of dev time trying to fix someting that is not broken . add ship interiors to stationary ships (docked or floating in not moving ) add eva you can do it since i have been doing eva by forcing a bug on porpuse and it works ..

So if the devs can't fix the repeating planetary features, which is too much of a technical challenge for the devs, which seems odd because it's something the devs created... Revert back to Horizons/Beyond planetary generation, but keep the atmospheres and the new biological distribution?
You're assuming the ones trying to fix it are the ones who created it. The creators are probably long gone and who knows for how long.

Bahahahahahahahahahahahaha....FDev, you are hilarious. I appreciate your basic open comms - seems like you want a medal. None given. You know, open and honest comms is one thing, robbing us of our cash while promising "more than alpha" then delivering a substandard product is something else. Promising a roadmap, then giving us a post-it note of "thing's to do". Promising 'more' at the end of June then saying you are "investigating key issues". Promising a 'what's next for Odyssey" roadmap implying there is 'more' then saying you are 'remeasuring' the roadmap. The key feature of your open comms is that you consistently promise "more" then deliver much less.

I don't care about the thousands of bugs you have fixed, that's developer 101 surely so no prizes there. What I do care about is gameplay features, attention to detail and quality assurance for paid content (or any content for that matter) I cannot get past the fact that it was communicated many times during alpha that alpha gameplay was only a sliver of what full release Odyssey had to offer. That planet tech was not turned on completely and more. Well, I can see now from your 'open and honest' comms that there is nothing 'more'. Now whenever you say "more is coming" I know with certainty that actually less is coming.

At least now I know and can make an informed decision about investing time and money into ED. So I uninstalled ED and I felt so damned relieved and unburdened.

I can only speak from personal experience, and constant 60 fps in any of the concourses is NOT currently possible on ANY rig no matter how high the specs.
I get a solid 85 fps with the above caveat, here's my rig in my sig below.....

P.S. I did briefly fit a Gigabyte RTX 3080 Ti Reference Graphics Card with absolutely NO (EDO) performance improvement over the Gigabyte RTX 2080 Retail Graphics Card which I have since refitted back in my PC (Which was built purely with Elite Dangerous in mind).
I'm running EDO on an Ultra wide screen monitor at 3440 x 1440 all settings on Ultra. FXAA 1.0 etc. etc. Getting 45-85 fps in station concourses. As stated solid 85 fps (capped) all elsewhere in EDO. The 'occasional' hitch or LOD popping is entirely down to the code, not my rig.

P.P.S. Sorry before anyone asks again...I have sold the RTX 3080 Ti (for a tidy profit too!)

Adding a positive comment about performance. I have an almost identical rig (2080Ti, 3440 x 1440 monitor, all ED settings maxed, even "UltraForCapture") and getting the same performance as you. Generally 60-70 fps on foot in stations, only dropping to 45-50 fps when standing near windows/reflections.

Moderators talk to CM's the whole day. We have been asking about the timing of the post all day.
It was released as soon as it could be.
So what you're saying is that from normal work start time, between 8am-9.00am, until the post was released was taken up by deciding what the content of the post was to include. At the end of roughly 8 hours they decided to release basically nothing new and avoid anything constructive.........great job done right there

Star Citizen is pretty stable at 3.13 and a bunch of goodies are coming in the 3.14 release . At this point there is more content being delivered in SC patches than the EDO DLC .
I can sit down , my ships have interiors and the planets look fantastic ..... really EDO are just falling so far behind here that it if I have to choose between playing EDO or SC - I am now verring towards SC no matter how condensed the Universe is compared to EDO . I expected long range plans announcing new Ships , more variety in Stations , more character actions on foot , more weapon types , more vehicles , maybe some future goal to provide interiors .... instead we get nothing except some babble about timelines .

As a console player who just finished reading all 39 pages, who at past times had his own ire raised by the snide comments directed toward "console players," I must confess having a bit of schadenfreude this month to the plight of the "PC Master Race" around EDO, especially after 's delayed launch bit for PS/XBOX (which now looks to be even longer.) But now after seeing how bad it's gotten, I have to say "mea culpa." Consolations from a "Consoler." (all puns intended.)

I really hope isn't banking on Console CMDRS, who watched this play out over the past month, and think they are going to just take 's word for it that it's "optimized" when they deem it ready to be bestowed upon PS/XBOX - no matter how many times a CM posts about ongoing "console development." I don't think I'm alone in saying it might be months after the console release, with multiple updates under it's belt, before I will even consider purchasing it.

I wonder if they altered SC footage, popped in an srv and called it Golden? I know Edo was supposed to look like this, the pre alpha footage .

Do these worlds with ice and snow even exist??
I've yet to see one closest i get is white snow but it doesn't really have any detail to it, just like a sea of white. Or its just ice that shines. I get the universe is big, but if your money shot worlds are as rare as a unicorn then something messed up somewhere along the line. I will be amazed if this doesn't end in a class action lawsuit at the rate things are going.

I believe you, but you shoulda made a screen capture because worlds like that seem extremely rare. 🤑
