News Development Update - 8th Jan

It's always wise to judge things based on results, not promises. I still agree with Adept: While the lack of offline mode is disappointing it's not the end of the world, and should be taken for what it is. Frontier is not the next game development messiah, they have practical and human limits. They said they'd provide feature updates and additions free of charge aside from the paid expansions, and I don't think anyone has to be wary about them going back on their word there. The only question is, how substantial these free additions are going to be. We already heard from Michael that mining isn't going to change a lot, for example. So let's wait and see, shall we?

Because it's bizarre and overblown. There is no conspiracy at work. I feel there are some really strange attitudes at work.

I get that some people felt strongly about the off-line mode they requested during the KS, but treating it as some horrible betrayal is utterly over the top.

I wasn't talking about offline mode. I was talking about trust. Offline mode is not the only thing that has been dropped to make a release that they said they wouldn't do until it was "ready".

The specifics are by the by. It's all about whether or not you believe what Frontier tell you as being the truth or not, and not going to be changed last minute for whatever reason.

If there are people out there (and there are, a lot of them) who no longer trust Frontier based on their past record, then that is completely understandable.

As I said, I don't know why you're confused on this.

Unless the difference between having an offline mode and not having one was the difference between being able to play the game and not being able to play, as it was for people who don't have adequate internet connectivity. Offline mode wasn't just about personal preference, at least for a sizable number of people - You and others who hold to such an opinion would do well to remember that.

How about treating it as "don't believe everything they say, due to experience"? Is that okay, in your esteemed view? Because that's all it is.

In my experience of it, there was an absolute ton of misrepresentation and exaggeration involved. Frontier were painted quite unfairly as bad guys, and people posted wild conspiracy theories and accusations, presenting things as deliberately misleading.

Never assume malice where an honest misestimation is an adequate explanation. I don't understand the paranoia that makes people automatically assume the worst, rather than give them the benefit of the doubt.

I agree the post KS communication could have been better, but no dev team is brillant at every aspect of the job.

Of course, and AFAIK those people got refunded, when that was e case. Quite a few others got refunded as well, even though they clearly were able to play, just as a good-will measure.

But let's not re-fight past battles. I feel like I shouldn't have gotten into this conversation again.

Back to talking about the up-coming updates :)

Not a case of "malice", I never thought FD were trying to be nasty!

But I now see them as a profit-led business, just like any other money-focused business with their associated PR spin, marketing and changes of mind if it fits the bottom line... rather than a team of friendly devs trying to do the best for the fans. The mistake was mine, in viewing them differently in the first place, as per the George Bush (mis) quote. :)

Viewing things a bit more cynically going forward and taking everything with a pinch of salt is, I feel, not really an overreaction.

I know - Just wanted to point that angle out, as I definitely understand those folks feeling angry and betrayed, given what went down, and how.

But yes, let's get back to talking about the upcoming updates :) Yah, updates!

:D

Exactly this.

+1 if I could.

Edit: yes, let's get back to talking about the up-coming updates (or rather the up-coming updates about the up-coming updates ;) )

I was extremely excited when Elite Dangerous was put up on Kickstarter and was quick to offer my patronage. My hope was that the dev's post today might be something that actually resembled a roadmap or at least talked about future features.

For context I believe the game and the universe are beautiful and the team should be commended for their work. At the same time I find myself severely disappointed at the lack of some very basic game functionality. The inability to create multiple commanders or even do something as simple as save and load in solo mode just makes me feel sad and frustrated. These are table stakes features and without them I find myself dreading the thought of playing rather than looking forward to it. I want to enjoy the game and not be worried about "well crap I guess I crashed instead of landing". I want to be able to go "cool just got my awesome new ship, I wonder how long I can hold off the starbase defenders" with the safety net of being able to load back to an old game. I wan't to be able to explore different types of play without having to delete all of the work I've previously done.

The devs have done a great job at creating a wonderful simulation but it is not a game. I wish that the dev's post might have offer some hope or solace but it has not. I do not regret helping to fund Elite Dangerous but I am very disappointed that I can't enjoy it.

To those of you who are loving it I hope you continue to do so.

So you want to remove the dangerous from Elite : Dangerous?

Great news. I cannot wait for the Mac release. I am playing on a crappy laptop at moment, cannot wait to play it on my iMac. I just think I might have trouble getting my 3dconnexion "six-axis" mouse to work with the game on mac though, but will play even if I cannot get it to work.

Please help.
Waiting for this game since the announcement was going to buy.
But when she came out, we have already started the war (East Ukraine). Every day bombing (Gorlovka), there is no work, destroyed the banking system, chaos, nothing.
Here wanted to know whether it is possible to get it without buying the key, the demo key example. There is nothing else to do besides sit at home and hide from attacks.
Buy now I can not, but I am going to buy after the war.

Woah. Missed that post somehow. My thoughts are with you, be safe.

You said it, man - seconded. I live in the US, and it tears me apart inside to think how much more we could and should be doing to help protect and defend him and his country. We used to stand up to bullies, now...

Well, one day soon, very soon, I hope, we will again. Hang in there, WeskerGorlovka - I'm praying for you. Try to stay safe, and hopefully one day soon you and your people will be able to live in peace and security again.

I'll shut up now, but I felt I had to say something.

Just remember to not be the bully...

Thanks for the reply. I have just downloaded the latest launcher and installed it. When I press the UPGRADE button, I now have an additional popup, 'Unhandled Exception: Object reference not set to an instance of an object' whatever that means. I really don't want to wipe the folder and download another 9GB, any ideas?

Try right clicking the launcher and run as Administrator?
