Dinosaur species count secretly quite high? Theory inside:

So, we all know that there were 30 dinosaurs in the demo version that we've all seen 100 times by now. And we also know, from Nick Rogers himself, that the final game will have "Over 30" dinosaurs in it. We have also heard reports from a german gaming news article there there will be "around 40 dino-types" in the game. So it seems likely we will see roughly 40 dinosaurs in the game, plus the 5 deluxe edition dinosaurs. However, there is some evidence to consider that we might get more than this...

1. The developers have been deliberately vague about the number. Saying over 30 could theoretically mean up to 70. If it was about 35 dinosaurs, that's so close to 30, surely they just would have said it? Since no statement has been made, they are clearly keeping the number secret. Why? The only other things they are keeping secret are big things in the game like Isla Nublar. Hmm.

2. The dig sites in the game don't add up. Here are some key examples: From the demo, Edmontosaurus is found in three dig sites, including one site where it is by itself. Why would the developers go through all the effort, researching and coding, to put a dig site into the game for Edmontosaurus only, when it's already in two other dig sites? You may think "you get different skins / genes depending on what site it comes from"; nope, you don't. Other examples include Spinosaurus apparently being the only dinosaur from Chenini and Bahariya, and Archaeornithomimus being the only dinosaur from both Iren Dabasu and Bissekty Formation. This makes no sense from a development, and gameplay point of view.

3. The DLC dinosaurs are odd choices. You would think, to make people more likely to pay for deluxe edition, they would put popular dinosaurs into the deluxe. But instead we get stuff like Crichtonsaurus, Archaeornithomimus... Sure, they have tie-ins to the series, but so do much more popular dinosaurs. Unless, those popular dinosaurs are already in the game. Furthermore, some of these DLC dinosaurs appear to be based on other dinosaurs; Suchomimus based off Baryonyx, and Majungasaurus based off Carnotaurus. But Baryonyx and Carnotaurus seem missing. Or are they?

4. The german article says "40 dino-types", emphasis on dino-types. It seems like species would be a much suitable word. Why use types? Well, maybe by types they mean they have particular sets of animations, and multiple species use those sets. So, for example, Velociraptor and Deinonychus would use the same animations, and have the same dino-type. Gallimimus and Struthiomimus have the same animations, so they are another dino-type. Etc.

5. Another way the dig sites don't add up; they indicate too many dinosaurs. For example, Canderelos is known for Giganotosaurus. Isle of Wright is known for Baryonyx. Cleveland-Lloyd is known for Allosaurus. Iren Dabasu is known for Gigantoraptor and Microceratus. Chenini is known for Carcharodontosaurus. There are a lot of examples of these, but with only 30-40 dinosaurs, barely any of them will make it in. Why would they have such specific names of dig sites then? Egg Mountain is perfect for Maiasaura, and that's in the game? Surely they would have chosen other sites less associated with these species? Or, just not included these sites in the first place?

6. Finally, with a roster size of 30-40, the Fallen Kingdom dinosaurs don't have room to make it in. Since the game is releasing alongside JW:FK, one of the Evolution writers has read the Fallen Kingdom script, and the fact that all of the FK dinosaurs have dig sites in the game that are perfect for them, this makes absolutely no sense. Plus, more people will buy the game in order to use the movie-specific dinosaurs.

Take this with a grain of salt. I personally believe we will still only (somehow) see 30-40 dinosaurs. But there is a lot of evidence to suggest that Frontier might be being sneaky, and we will see more dinosaurs than we are expecting. Maybe Colin Treverrow's tweet that the game has "so many species; you guys are gonna lose your sh*t" is still true.

What do you guys think?

There might be some truth to that. You can literally put all the FK dinos (except Sinoceratops I think) in the digsites we've seen. It would be extremely dumb not to have them at launch (or as a free DLC right after the movie).

Some really nice theories, there. :)

Just regarding the point 4. - If anything from the German article doesn't completely make sense, first culprit is misunderstanding in translation, not conspiracy. ;)

30 would be kind of let down but not a major let down, not for me at least. I am not looking for every Dinosaur to be in the game or as someone on reddit said your favorite obscurasaurus. I am sure we will get more Dinosaurs as DLC. Free or not.

Nope there's only 30 dinosaurs including the deluxe set (they're in base game only appearing late on. Deluxe unlocks them immediately). We saw on BiS video there was only 30 dinosaurs listed.

Very disappointing.

My take: there will be a Fallen Kingdom DLC as the game releases before the movie is released, with Indoraptor and other dinos that may appear in the movie. It makes sense for not spoiling the Indoraptor or other dinos' appereance

Nice delusion, still there are only a total of 30 dinosaurs confirmed now...

Nice delusion, still there are only a total of 30 dinosaurs confirmed now...

And 30 is all we're going to get. At least with the base release.

30 is all we were shown in the youtube videos, and I've seen nothing to prove otherwise than a German article which could easily be mistranslated.

Let's see:

Confirmed dinos

1. - Ankylosaurus
2. - Apatosaurus
3. – Archaeornithomimus
4. - Brachiosaurus
5. – Camarasaurus
6. - Ceratosaurus
7. – Chasmosaurus
8. – Crichtonsaurus
9. - Deinonychus
10. - Dilophosaurus
11. - Edmontosaurus
12. - Gallimimus
13. – Indominus
14. - Kentrosaurus
15. – Majungasaurus
16. – Metriacanthosaurus
17. – Pachycephalosaurus
18. - Parasaurolophus
19. - Spinosaurus
20. - Stegosaurus
21. – Struthiomimus
22. – Styracosaurus
23. - Suchomimus
24. - Triceratops
25. - Tyrannosaurus
26. - Velociraptor

+

27. Maiasaura
28. Muttaburrasaurus
29. Giganotosaurus (or Carnotaurus)

(all 3 are extremely likely given their digsites)

Then there are the FK dinos + remaining dinos from the old trilogy that are also likely given their digsites are all present.
1. - Allosaurus
2. – Baryonyx
3. - Carnotaurus
4. - Corythosaurus
5. - Indoraptor
6. - Mamenchisaurus
7. - Sinoceratops / Pachyrhinosaurus
8. - Stygimoloch

All of this leads us to 37 dinos. Considering that german magazine said 40 I'm led to believe the actual number is 40 - 45.

You can't mod but you can erm, tamper with the dino DNA, so theoretically you can have different "versions" of each species.

It's a shame you can't mod, seems like a game that might benefit a fair deal from such a thing.

I'm guessing about 40 dinos. I'm fine with that amount. Presumably there will be the usual DLCs going on as well, but It's starting to look pricey, £45 + DLCs isn't a great price imo.

Nice delusion, still there are only a total of 30 dinosaurs confirmed now...

I saw other people ask you for sources on this and you haven't provided any yet. This also doesn't mean we won't get anymore Dinosaurs through DLC. I am sure Frontier had a schedule to keep with the game so they probably didn't have time to full everyones Dinosaur wishes. Not that I am saying we won't be getting 30 cause IMO we don't really know. But you keep posting it like it's fact and I haven't seen a single source provided.

My point was there's more then what was in jpog plus the abilty to mess with DNA and get extra versions of dinos, plus possible DLC addons. Might make it so you really don't need modding. Jpog was ok but needed to be modded to get its full potential.

Even then a lot of the mods were garbage, though the effort was good. JPOG wasn't very good either. It was only so popular cause there was no other Jurassic Park themed park builder on the market.

If there's only 30 at launch I'm sure people will kick and scream enough before the DLCs rolls out. Games nowadays aren't fully released at launch. You get a base game and that satisfies people who can't wait for it to come out. Plus they use the base for feedback to make improvements when rolling out DLC. If there's a large amount of chritisizism about a dino not being in game it will probably show in a DLC. Heck maybe they want to take more time to perfect some of those special dinos so they wait until the DLC to release them.

Yeah jpog was rough on the edges and modding was a bit of a pain. I'm just glade they came back to the concept and are giving us what jpog should have been.
