So, we all know that there were 30 dinosaurs in the demo version that we've all seen 100 times by now. And we also know, from Nick Rogers himself, that the final game will have "Over 30" dinosaurs in it. We have also heard reports from a german gaming news article there there will be "around 40 dino-types" in the game. So it seems likely we will see roughly 40 dinosaurs in the game, plus the 5 deluxe edition dinosaurs. However, there is some evidence to consider that we might get more than this...
1. The developers have been deliberately vague about the number. Saying over 30 could theoretically mean up to 70. If it was about 35 dinosaurs, that's so close to 30, surely they just would have said it? Since no statement has been made, they are clearly keeping the number secret. Why? The only other things they are keeping secret are big things in the game like Isla Nublar. Hmm.
2. The dig sites in the game don't add up. Here are some key examples: From the demo, Edmontosaurus is found in three dig sites, including one site where it is by itself. Why would the developers go through all the effort, researching and coding, to put a dig site into the game for Edmontosaurus only, when it's already in two other dig sites? You may think "you get different skins / genes depending on what site it comes from"; nope, you don't. Other examples include Spinosaurus apparently being the only dinosaur from Chenini and Bahariya, and Archaeornithomimus being the only dinosaur from both Iren Dabasu and Bissekty Formation. This makes no sense from a development, and gameplay point of view.
3. The DLC dinosaurs are odd choices. You would think, to make people more likely to pay for deluxe edition, they would put popular dinosaurs into the deluxe. But instead we get stuff like Crichtonsaurus, Archaeornithomimus... Sure, they have tie-ins to the series, but so do much more popular dinosaurs. Unless, those popular dinosaurs are already in the game. Furthermore, some of these DLC dinosaurs appear to be based on other dinosaurs; Suchomimus based off Baryonyx, and Majungasaurus based off Carnotaurus. But Baryonyx and Carnotaurus seem missing. Or are they?
4. The german article says "40 dino-types", emphasis on dino-types. It seems like species would be a much suitable word. Why use types? Well, maybe by types they mean they have particular sets of animations, and multiple species use those sets. So, for example, Velociraptor and Deinonychus would use the same animations, and have the same dino-type. Gallimimus and Struthiomimus have the same animations, so they are another dino-type. Etc.
5. Another way the dig sites don't add up; they indicate too many dinosaurs. For example, Canderelos is known for Giganotosaurus. Isle of Wright is known for Baryonyx. Cleveland-Lloyd is known for Allosaurus. Iren Dabasu is known for Gigantoraptor and Microceratus. Chenini is known for Carcharodontosaurus. There are a lot of examples of these, but with only 30-40 dinosaurs, barely any of them will make it in. Why would they have such specific names of dig sites then? Egg Mountain is perfect for Maiasaura, and that's in the game? Surely they would have chosen other sites less associated with these species? Or, just not included these sites in the first place?
6. Finally, with a roster size of 30-40, the Fallen Kingdom dinosaurs don't have room to make it in. Since the game is releasing alongside JW:FK, one of the Evolution writers has read the Fallen Kingdom script, and the fact that all of the FK dinosaurs have dig sites in the game that are perfect for them, this makes absolutely no sense. Plus, more people will buy the game in order to use the movie-specific dinosaurs.
Take this with a grain of salt. I personally believe we will still only (somehow) see 30-40 dinosaurs. But there is a lot of evidence to suggest that Frontier might be being sneaky, and we will see more dinosaurs than we are expecting. Maybe Colin Treverrow's tweet that the game has "so many species; you guys are gonna lose your sh*t" is still true.
What do you guys think?
