Discovery Scanner - 27.03.2023

Planning? No no, this was my decision from not just today’s feedback but general vibes simmering for a time, to attempt to better refine things for you all on a whole.

We can try this and see how it goes! I want to make sure I channel Monday morning efforts in the right direction o7
Monday Morning Channeling should only involve coffee...

On the subject, who's bright idea was it to prevent players from partaking in consecutive settelment combat battles without being transported (in the Star Trek sense) back to the station. Why can't you stick around for an hour of combat or more without dragged away from it by Frontier. "No, that's quite enough of that - you were having far too much fun."
Except that you can stay. Take a Dropship (I mean Vulture) to the on-foot CZ and after finishing it, don't recall it back. Instead relog and you'll reset the CZ and play it all over again. Rinse and repeat until you're bored and then call a taxi back (option to take a Dro...Vulture back will be gone after the first relog).

Alternatively, fly with your own ship and do the same relogging thing.

Rubs hands...

Let's change this up from here on out.

I'm going to shuffle up Discovery Scanner.
It'll no longer be classed or assumed a "news outlet", to save you all the potential of frustration.

It'll be back to the good old days of "featured commanders" now and then, as we celebrate cool stuff happening in the Galaxy and will simply be posted as and when we have bumper editions (it'd still be lovely to do that kind of thing weekly, but all naturally depends on what's going on out there).

We'll post informative, "full, game development news only", and class it as such when we have it, with no weekly recaps or reassurance posts - just deliver you straight facts when we have them, to help - again - prevent frustration - so Commanders, it will be a strict case of "No news is good news" in many cases.

I'll look to factor in progress reports on issues and other notable topics, perhaps into Frameshift Live or a bespoke article when possible to do so - absolutely understand that those kind of information nuggets and progress reports are highly desirable, for good reason. We can also provide update reassurance as part of livestreams and larger scale news communication where suitable too.

Right!

Let's do this o7

Thanks everyone!
To be frank it is a shame and a sad affair that you seem to buckle to the very loud, annyoing voices that shout you down and belittle everything you post unless it contains spectacular development announcements ("ship interiors when?"). The weekly summary is a good thing, and the paragraph "we have no development news to share" is just one of the many. I would ask you to reconsider, because you know as well as I do that those loud voices are just that, loud and always discontented, and always looking for an opportunity to moan. I think there are many who like the format even if they don't express it as loudly every time.

Gunna do you all some even better, fun posts, just you wait! No worries o7
Maybe so but I still feel a little saddened by this.

It's to be expected though.
The same as when a minority of loudmouths moan that the game is too hard or they want quicker progress / easier way to earn credits / easier collection of materials / 'special' equipment without having to put the effort in etc.
Unfortunately FD always buckle.

Hi Sally o7

First of all, I have a huge amount of respect for all the work you put into your community interactions and posts.

The classic weekly discovery scanner updates were great - really - but as previously stated, a lot of people are solely interested in development news rather than in-game news and for that group of people (which I count myself towards) this weekly segment had been kind of in an odd place.

While I understand that there can't be new huge revelations about upcoming features on a weekly basis (or at all, to prevent spoilers) - having weekly development updates with little to no info on the development itself, except for 'its all on schedule' most of the time, is kind of frustrating for me personally.

Elite is still my favorite space game and I appreciate all the work that is still going into it - it just lost such a great amount of momentum coming into 2023 in my opinion. Probably due to the longer patch intervalls, or the lack of a roadmap. Usually I prefer the 'rather show than tell' approach, but in this case I am not so sure about it anymore.

We know there is more Thargoid stuff coming - and thats great - however I (and i can only speak for myself here) rather care about the state of the game as a whole and there is still a lot of leftover issues sprinkled around, which havent been adressed or mentioned in months / years.

  • The strange reduction of maneuver thruster force on all ships for example.
  • Flickering shadows
  • AA
  • ...

If there is a possibility of bringing the top 20 issues list back and giving updates on how the internal status of those looks like, that would be amazing.

Furthermore, development updates such as the rescheduling of the mayor feature rework - while appreciated and necessary - are even more frustrating to read, since we didn't even know what it was supposed to be in the first place and what those investigations ultimately lead to. To 'talk' about it again at the end of the year, while it was supposed to release by the end of the first quarter, leaves a sour taste to say the least.

On one side its pretty transparent to share the good aswell as the bad news, on the other side however, it is still bothering me that there are hardly any specifics shared until patch day. I know there is only so much you as CMs can do / tell, yet I still want to express my frustration on that topic.

It feels like a status quo. We know of Update 15 and 16 and we know what the focus for 15 is. However everything beyond that is completely uncertain and it really dampens my enthusiasm and excitement for the future of the game. While thats completely and solely a me-problem - its still a shame.

Hello Sally,

Maybe my response is late to the party, but with the time difference and RL it was difficult to find time and comment on this. This change of the Discovery Scanner is not preferable. For me, I find it indifferent. Listening to no news or commander details has the same irrelevance.

I can understand and sympathise with both yours and Avod's blunt approach. I can share his frustration. For me, this is a 6 year relationship. Yes, it's a game, but I've invested 6 years in this, with time taken out of my personal and family life. So I, too, feel frustrated when there are no news for this passion of mine. And I'm "happy" someone was blunt enough to express it. Too bad you're the focus point of such behaviour, as the Senior Community Manager. But I'm sure that such frustration is not directed at you, but at those above your hierarchy that cause it. Your job is just to announce the strategy the Management have lead this game into.

My problem is with the bugs, especially the small annoying bugs. Why do I have to enter my Secure Storage a second time after buying cargo from my FC to have it registered? The devs have created whole worlds and interwoven systems, especially now with the Thargoid war. How difficult is to allocate someone to find this little bug? something is triggered when entering the market screen, but not when exiting it. Also, when we take content from our backpack. For similar items, the wrong entry (line in the screen) quantity is reduced. The same mistake in focus happens with the ship modules. Just try to repair multiple Module Reinforcement with an AFMU. The wrong MR is being fixed. Is this a reuse of a faulty method?

On the positive side, in the Galaxy and System map, the small "exit door" icons on the bottom left didn't overlap until 2 patches ago. Somebody saw and fixed that. A small thing, but now I don't have to move my mouse to exit both in sequence. It wasn't in any patch notes, but it made me smile when I noticed.

Serious things can be brought down by many small ones, this game reminds me of "death by a thousand cuts". Hyperbole? definitely. Does it feel like it? same.

If devs work on fixing bugs, why not advertise it in the forums? "remember this little nuance? It won't affect you after the next coming patch". Do you know how much kudos you'd get for such posts?

Also, when we had the consoles, there was the excuse that not many patches can be released in higher frequency because Microsoft/Sony need a special procedure to release them. Now this is irrelevant. Why not release small QoL patches faster and sooner? I remember you mentioning you're very proud of your Quality Control department. Let them live up to their reputation.

Please, and I'm saying this with the utmost respect, for us this is not a job, it's our passion. I hope and remember it's yours, too, so please let the higher ups know me and some others are not very happy. It's their mess you're cleaning, not yours.

Thanks for your time.

I was unaware that voicing ones opinion on the forums is now a crime. People have every right to bring up the fact surrounding U15. Have the minority of the forums adopted the Russian/China system that voicing option is a crime and that following the instructions of the system is the only acceptable way. Maybe I need to reevaluate the situations in reference to the game and my playing status.

That's a very unreasonable interpretation that you are engaging in to paint a mischaracterization of what is being discussed. Constantly badgering community managers about things that they have no control over, after they have already indicated that there is nothing to report, and furthermore saying that they will notify us as soon as there is something to report is not "voicing one's opinion", it's not a crime either, but it could well be argued that it's against forum rules and possibly Frontier's harassment policy. Or just really asinine.
