This A.I finally gets you chewing on your leather. I had a couple of fight against a handful of ships in a haz rez and boy did i sweat. At last, no more Conda-cows waiting to be slaugthered, no more bull     wings of light fighters popping like ants under Doc Martens boots. AFM units are welcomed between fights i tell you that much.

Good going FDev!

I voted too hard.

I've always made my money from bounty hunting. Now with the difficulty of the AI, I enjoy the challenge, but having the limp back to station after encountering a handful of ships is just a buzz-kill. I agree that there are too many elite, deadly, and dangerous encounters. The risk factor is too high on a 5mil rebuy cost while taking near fatal damage from bounties worth 20k or so.

I remember starting out in this game with a weak ship, no money for modules, and no real combat experience. It was a lot of trial and error figuring out how to fight properly and I died a lot. I think new players are going to feel helpless and frustrated, and will probably quit before spending much time in this game.
I'm lucky as I'm still in a Cobra with a 56k insurance rebuy cost. Have to be a bit choosy who I take on though. :)

(canned laughter)

So much for the poll where it showed "most" of us as in our late 30s to early 40s, that pole was clearly a lie, that or we've been hacked by the WoW teen brigade! Judging by a great many replies here the same crew are getting to run wild with remarks, baiting and flaming as normal, and not a you know who in sight. Wonder if I was to do some masked swearing, bet the speed would be breathtaking. Keep up the GOOD work, money well spent!

Reading about the majorly pimped up AI I decided not to jump into the game but rather try a training mission, cobra face-off.

I am playing since 1.0.7, PvE only.

oh oh...

I prevailed with 81% hull. The AI cobra was "competent" with (I think) 4 pulse lasers. If it had 2 rail guns like me it would probably have turned me into space debris.

I pip managed all the time and was able to get off my opponents shields 3 times, mine fell off once. I was able to hit with my rail guns once, missed at the other attempt. At one point the AI cobra engaged me in circling so as to avoid my fire and bring its shields back online. It felt like real combat against an opponent who knows the game physics, which I like even if challenging.

I am not sure what to make of it though. As it stands now I won't play the game - too risky - but practice until I master (most of) the training missions again. Or not. Practicing takes time which I could spend on other non-E:D things. And maybe I will never become good enough no matter how often I play the training missions.

I recommend that anyone who hasn't extended combat experience try the same cobra face-off training mission as I did. Cheaper than a rebuy screen and you know where you stand against the new AI.

Like I said before, the AI and equipment is just fine as long as the rewards match the risk. These paltry bounties are a joke because you WILL die eventually, and you'll just end up working to make up your buy back. If they could match that risk with proper reward, I think it would be a real boon to bounty hunting and could transform the profession.

Wait until the pirate engages a target, and then open fire. That way the NPC takes the damage, and NOT you. ;) You also get a DPS boost from the NPC-miners added damage. It's like having a temporary wing mate.

Ui.....
these guys/gals voting too easy must be joking...

2.0 LongRange Combat FAS (shielded) (even changed 2 A0 SBs to 2 PDs).
My Rank as seen below: Deadly.
Interdicted by 3 Ships: Sidey, 2x Eagle, all Master.

That wasn't funny in 2.0
New either.

in 2.0 Fight lasted not very long, was a disappointment AND completely needless, 'cause low bounty and nada experience (in combat rank).
Now: WHAT A FIGHT! Oh yes, it was compelling....
but.... come 'on!
I've had disabled my both SBs (I think that was from last week I made it so Shields got up faster and I forgot to re-enable )
I survived with 90% Hull. Okay, I didn't survived, 'cause that would mean I would have been in a real trouble, which I wasn't.... THIS TIME.

But this were Sideys and Eagles!!!! (with Rails....)
I don't want to imagine what would have been if I were in a CZ (I liked that in 2.0 and below) or SSS.

Bounty got from all 3 Ships: 27K. :O
hmmmmm....

For all the Triple-Billionaires with multiple veds and cutters.... seems right.
For any other...... oh dear......

So my conclusion:
IF this will be the state-of-AI-art, UP the bounty and experience (hey good fight... but nothing xp... and money either)
and - I don't know yet - keep deadlies/elites and even more such in wings LOW against players.
So you PVPers.... now you all at least should stop complaining PVE is dump anymore [wacky]

I voted too hard for one simple reason. Risk to reward ratio.

I was more than happy for the derpy AI to be worth so little, but now that taking on a clipper in my Covette is a 15 minute affair, I cannot justify the time spent. I could have earned a few million in simple bulk trading in that same amount of time in my Anaconda. This decentivizes bounty hunting altogether as you cannot earn the same amount of money as before. Either meet in the middle and make sure that AI opponents do not use engineered components or up the bounty reward to be more attractive. That deadly clipper that was only worth 149k before, could be worth a few million and I would be more than happy to spend the time fighting it.

I think the idea is that you also snatch a kill mission to go with your big extermination spree. In the beta I saw that the usual paltry 1-200k for 30 pirates missions can have a 0 added to the end if you play your cards right. Didn't have much time with live, but in the beta the payouts weren't bad. As for the live version, last night while stress testing the defenses of my trade ship I shot 3 ships (master Keelback, harmless Asp Scout, competent FAS) and got 91k for them. Only the last one could do anything my trade setup so I both got valuable data concerning my idea of safe trading.. and some materials for Todd the blaster along with the money.

WHAT THE ****. How can people vote for "too hard"? Everything has to be served on a silver plate, or what? Ridiculous you lot!

Is it really that hard to train a little so one becomes better at fighting...

Not everyone is born a top gun pilot, and not everyone has extra hours (and probably credits) to practice combat.

I'm just tooling about a safe system in a well-spec'd Asp looking for stuff. Even in a L0/L1 USS I'm meeting modded NPCs who do serious alpha damage. I'm not saying that they shouldn't be in-game, I'm just think they're too common or they seem to be. The AI level may or may not be right but I think that the distribution of NPC skill levels is off because they seem clustered towards the high end in what should be a relatively safe environment and modded NPCs seem to be too common as well.

I think this hits the nail on the head. Too many people are either confusing, or not sufficiently distinguishing between, the actual ship AI (i.e. how aggressive it is, how skilfully it flies etc.) and the weapons load out it's carrying. I've already had a few encounters with Deadly or Elite NPCs with weapons load outs that were appropriate for their rank, and they were really good scraps! Yes, I lost a lot more shield and hull than I would have done before, but I felt as though I'd earned the win. On the other hand I've also come across Competent-ranked vipers and cobras with ludicrous amounts of heat attack and fire rate that my FAS was simply unable to withstand, which is just plain stupid.
Also, given that I'm on 1.6, I have NO OPPORTUNITY to gain any of these weapons and level the playing field. This is where the real problem for FDEV comes in, because ultimately this is supposed to be a game, but feeling like you're constantly at a disadvantage is not fun. Having every encounter with an NPC become a gruelling fight to the death for a measly 100k bounty or an even more measly 30 merits, is not fun!

Games should be fun!

Good advice Sir. Also playing CQC is also 100% risk free and very educational. The skills learned there can be transferred to the main game vs NPCs.

Your "Git Gud" is a bit strong when people are mainly (I think) saying that the AI is more challenging but that the engineered mods on them are too prevalent and that the scaling of rankings is "not quite there yet".

SJA needs to be reined-in a bit I think, there has been too much heroine-worship I fear. ;)

I Voted about right.

Did a mission last night and got wasted by an expert Vulture cos I just got over confident. I haven't died to an A.I opponent this year so loved it. Now I'm actually a bit worried about combat and really try to avoid the interdiction - exactly how I'd like it to be - it was largely a forgone conclusion in 2.0 that you would win or escape easily. I think FD nailed it on this so far - spot on for me after 1 nights play - I just enjoy the challenge. Beating an A.I opponent now means something.

Guessing yer not newcomer friendly then...game is almost unplayable now so looks like you hardcore elitist players get what ye want and to hell with everyone else. Not cool m8, not cool (

I'm wondering if we'll have an easier time of it once we have juiced up guns and shields from the Engineers...

But yeah, why struggle with NPCs when you can cart about 25 tonnes of cargo 70LY in an Asp for over 1 million? :D
