Still haven't been interdicted by anything less than elite ranking npcs, I am expert rank thats no where near elite.

Wow... what a lot to read!
The answer to the poll (in my eyes) is yes to all. Can it be changed to please everyone? Perhaps...

"It's too easy!"

Moving forward, it won't be. High ranks will use adaptive logic. Means the harder you fight, the harder the AI fights. Should hopefully mean a good challenge for skilled players.

"It's just right."

Perhaps, but I want to take it down a notch and throw in more tactics to create a more enjoyable and less predictable experience.

"It's too hard!"

I hear ya... Adaptive logic could dynamically downgrade AI performance to give players a chance. E.g. player is fleeing... Pirate AI could downgrade its weapon accuracy and boosting ability, giving the player a good chance to escape.

Well, just some of my thoughts. :)

With no disrespect meant, I will believe it when I see it.

Can you confirm that this is the behavior of the current AI? I agree this should address all spectrum of player abilities. After all, we are humans that learn how to engage fights against NPCs better over time, so this adaptive heuristic should provide more opportunity to cmdrs to enhance their skills.

Ok guys, this is getting silly. You don't have to create your own thread for every single variant of whether the AI is too hard or too easy.

Post here to discuss please.

New threads on the topic of the AI will be locked and redirected here, unless there is a very compelling reason as to why they are somehow different.

Cheers.

I predicted such posts during beta seeing the difficulty, but this is getting ridiculous.

incidentally i think also a lot of people are saying about using flight assist off. do xbox players even have that ability? i use a controller on pc and FA off would just make things far too complicated, and i think this will also factor into an AI discussion - we dont all have proper flightsticks and rudder pedals to play. it doesnt make a difference to the op npc weapon issue however.

but we can make 200 pages if we try! we're so close [haha]

Hi TiberiusKirk and Sndle9,

I hope I can help with this discussion. There are three mechanics at play here:-

1. Shields recharge at the same rate of 1 Mj per second so long as the sys cap is not empty. This rate cannot be varied.

2. The sys cap drains by reason of shield recharge and use of utilities such as heat sinks. However, the drain is so low that 1 pip is under all normal conditions of use sufficient to offset it entirely.

3. Pips to sys change shield resistance to incoming damage as set out in Cmdr StarLightBreaker's thread linked to by Sndle9.

It is for reason (3) that since forever PvP-ers have routinely destroyed PvE-ers in shielded combat merely by using 4 pips to sys, which combined with FA-off and reversing considerably outweighs any attendant losses caused by lack of pips to eng and wep.

If you wish to see how PvP-ers of the highest order and experience use 4 pips to sys in practice you might for example watch the recent battle between Time of Chaos v Rebuy Screenius Maximus in Season 2 of the PvP League.

My your caps never drain,

Truesilver

That's really interesting Truesilver, assuming it is true - and I don't doubt your honesty. So that would be a hidden mechanic within the game.. It's not apparent or documented anywhere officially.

Added: it would mean that there is an element of the ENG pips behaviour, within the SYS capacitor (sic), that isn't advertised or apparent.

Looking at the numbers from the poll and the number of posts, this is obviously a very passionate group. The comment about how we will have in ship combat just drives my point home; too much focus on fighting in space. This means that everything else the game could have been; it won't. Elite Dangerous is becoming a niche Space Fighting sim just like Eve online.

All his points are correct, yes. :)

The only variance that I have come across from this is with bi-weave shields, which recharge faster. With these, I have found that while regenerating (from down), they seem to drain the sys capacitor and adding more pips to SYS is then necessary or the capacitor drains. This does not happen with standard shields.

More pips to SYS absolutely makes shields significantly more resistant to damage while they are up.

Thanks Truesilver,
I really wish I could find the numbers post from the programmer that I vaguely remember reading as I couldn't remember exactly what the mechanism was but, like others, I'm certain from reading and experience that pips to Sys makes much more difference to the shields than just keeping the reservoir full.

Looking at the total number of individual accounts compared to the number of players, not so big. ;) Note, that's not commenting on the validity of many posts in this thread.

I'm fairly sure pip management is covered in the manual.

EDIT: Quick browse and it seems not. It really should be, pips to sys when taking damage is important. Likewise pips to ENG for extra agility when necessary.

When you say number of players, I hope you don't mean the number of copies sold.....I mean LOL if that is the case.......Star Wars Battlefront shift 13 Million Units and can barely fill a server 5 months later.......

It really is heart warming to read all the stories from the veterans here about how much they enjoying the game right now...shame the new players here can't say the same. Feels like I get my teeth kicked in just for daring to try and move from one system to the next. Pointless game now can't make any progress hence can't get better gear...right now, my guns are doing nothing more than making my jump range shorter.

But hey...don't let such a silly noob who just had his legs cut off and told to run a marathon ruin the party fer those who have the resources to survive and mock those of us who don't ^^

Ok, i already see.. nerf is incoming.. But I bet you.. please! Don't make it 300% time easyer. Please! It was my best times in Elite Dangerous just this few days.. I will missed that so much.. All of us. Just a bit.. Please, mom! Just a bit..

Don't think so mate, it will be more spread out, but if you have a high combat rank, and fight back = bounty hunting, the NPC will wake up.
If not, say you're running away, it will not be as aggressive as it can be.

So as I understood it, if you go bounty hunting, it will not be easier if you have a high combat rank, and fight back.

Read back a few pages, AI Programmer outlined their possible adaptations to the AI for ALL levels

EDIT - The shield pips discussion has blown my mind, i've only had the game a week or two and didn't even know keeping pips in shield gave you a stronger shield, thought it was just something to do when you needed cap recharge for shield regeneration.

Of course not, that's why I said "players" not "copies sold". In regards to the shields digression, I know that 4 pips to SYS means that the shields last longer than with no pips to SYS, ergo the shields are "stronger" ie they last longer, insert one of many synonyms here. Is that statement incorrect?

I'm a veteran, and I think the game has taken some poor directions. I also think it isn't fun enough - but FD will soon realise that when the cash stops coming in.

These boards can still be quite helpful, but there are a lot of 'hardcore' players these days who seem to have taken over, who want to make this minor success even less playable..

For discussion you could head over to Reddit. But - I hope - you can still post politely here and get a decent response without being called a noob etc.

I'm a founder, but was immediately called a 'snowflake' - whatever that means.

Anyway, welcome to the game.

Now dangerous AI is in game. It was missing! All NPC were too easy. Now if you not engage anything above Competent, you should be fine. Just look at the damn rank and not act as a bull and not charge at everything. If you want not dangerous gameplay, go try American Truck Simulator. It is great and safe.
