[DISTANT WORLDS] SRV exploding workaround

UPDATE : Make a support ticket and FD will give it back(cheers to CMDRs who posted this, newman & ziljan)
Until we get a patch to fix this(and even then it might not) we need a guide on the Do/Don't Do when driving SRVs.
Some of you guys are only taking 1 SRV, many only 2(halfway to Beagle point and you lose one, how would you feel left with one working SRV?)

SO, can I have your suggestions from your own experience and from reading other posts please ?

Some of the following might be red herrings, but how about we err on the side of caution ?
  • Keep SRV health above 97% (my experience and the Horizons forum/Support forum)
  • Do NOT repair SRV with anything other than BASIC repair(Horizons forum/Support forum)
  • When logging off, dock SRV with ship
  • Do not leave SRV standing for a long time(Horizons Forum/Support forum)
  • Do not let SRV run out of fuel(Horizons forum)

SHIP BUG Also reading Horizons forum(and here) if you park up over night on a planet surface and you appear INSIDE the planet the next day, log off and log in to Non-Horizons ED and you should be in orbit. This especially works if your ship explodes whilst you're in your SRV(read on Horizons forum)

I have done all of those except ran out of fuel and not single SRV destroyed since the Horizons beta. Yet.
So, im very excited to see if it hits me at some point. :D

i have let my srv run out of fuel before creating new fuel for it... I wanted to know what would happen before I got more than 5K LY from home...

Basically it is the same as if you turn off your canopy in your ship - you go onto life support timer... a quick refuel and away you go all is good with the world again :D

As for damage to the srv, as long as you do NOT destroy it, you are golden...

You can repair it on the fly with base materials as long as you have collected them and the materials are plentiful on MR and HMC worlds...

Basic repair will repair you to 100% as will docking it back in your ship...

As I said you can repair on the fly - I went down a really steep and long slope flat out early after horizons release... banged my buggy up to 45% hull left and was only halfway down so I managed to do a handbrake stop and did a basic repair which put me back to 100% then continued on down and did another repair at the bottom where I was about 25% hull left as I was even less careful on the bottom part but what a lot of fun

I am currently on a trip to the core and am going to have a fly by the neutron fields - as long as my trusty ol asp remains in one piece (at 68% hull right now due to some emergency stops) and I only brought 1 SRV with me and have landed on a number of planet surfaces already while doing prospecting

You missed the point of this thread :)
The SRV has spontaneous exploding syndrome :D
Reading stuff over the last few weeks I am gathering reasons others have posted on why their SRVs exploded. I have run out of fuel many times and have been fine, but one other person says otherwise. Just being careful.

Also , as an example, I was going across a flat plain and for absolutely no reason my health went from 100% to 13% , hence why many of us think keeping SRV at 100%(or near) will negate the spontaneous explosions.

I have not seen any of this (yet), I used to leave my SRV on the surface when logging out, but always dock and leave my ship well away from trouble. I tend to refuel at 10% never had an issue, and I always just use the basic refuel, I have never repaired and the lowest I got to was 21%. However, as I am a belt and braces explorer I will heed the warnings as in the OP.
I actually find the SRV quite robust, I rolled one down a steep slope on a 1.5g planet and only lost 5% health.
I think those of us who have been using the SRV for a while should be okay, I am more concerned for those who have rarely been out in it.

ki must confess I have not seen any SRV self combustions yet either...

One thing I have not done is leave my ship / srv on a planet overnight, I tend to wind up my prospecting, rejoin my ship and jump to the next star in my journey and scan the system before I log off for the night...

Hmmm could you point me to a thread where this self detonating SRV problem is being discussed? please :)

Didn't know about this, and I'm just returning from Beagle point having taken 1 SRV and landed about 6,7 times. Had no problems, here's what I did:-

Repaired vehicle before it blew up, obviously. It did go down to 25% once, but I was tooling around jumping my Ananconda.

Only repaired it with the lowest repair solution.

Only refuelled it with the lowest refuel solution.

Never logged out on a planet, I always log out in SC in the void.

The only 'bug' I get is the reverse, can't get the SRV stopping to go forward thing, and when it does it's going at full speed forward. I use an XBone controller for Windows.

Hope this advice helps. Cheers.

Cheers, the 25% might have been or not.
For comparison : Just now i was messing and jumping with my Asp and SRV, and after hitting my Asp really hard (oooh :D ) about 5 or 6 times I went down from 98% to 84%

Technique to fix the "SRV won't go forward then goes full boost": Map a key on the keyboard or other device to the "accelerate" option for the SRV. As my X52 Pro gets stuck not wanting to go forward a lot, I use this to get un-stuck. When you push the accelerate button in this case, the SRV will try to immediately go forward at full but, if your throttle or other analog device controlling is not set at full, the SRV should "remember" who's in charge and take on the throttle setting.
.
One addition to the OP that Alintel added to my post earlier this week. If your SRV gets stuck/starts falling through a planet and contemplate self-destruction, logout and back into the 32bit version of the game. This should force you into space in a safe location. I cannot guarantee that your SRV will be on board but I will try it tonight after work.

I've only had it once, when I was at 77%. Full speed, BOOM!

Keep SRV health above 97% wouldn't work for me I think. That's like 10 feet of driving for me. :)
Do NOT repair SRV with anything other than BASIC repair Check
When logging off, dock SRV with ship No, nein, njet! Ok, maybe for the DW trip. I like to take long treks and having to manage picking up Nickel and Iron for repairs.
Do not leave SRV standing for a long time What's a long time?
Do not let SRV run out of fuel Check, refueling at 10%

I've not yet destroyed a SRV. I had had a couple of incidents that were my fault (driving off into a canyon at full speed was one) that have reduced my hull down to less 50% and was doubtful that this bug even existed.

It does though, I was at 100% hull driving back to my ship ( a few hundred metres away) on a flat stone free surface at a steady slow speed when "Bang" - "Hull Critical 5%" - repaired using a Basic repair - but If I hadn't started with 100% I believe I would have lost it.

I wonder if it's a rendering problem? I've never seen a "stone free surface"...

I have not had the random explosion.
I have had many "deaths" due to bugs, all of which could have been avoided by the 1.5 Relogging technique.

I am only taking 2 SRV, that extra 0.5ly is enough to tempt me. If I get the random explosion, I will Ticket it and see about a replacement. If I am dumb, I will suck it up.
