[DISTANT WORLDS] SRV exploding workaround

I was also ignorantly drifting around, but once my hull went down to 6% without any crash or other cause - I was simply driving in straight line at full speed on a flat surface. As I'm in the core region, it scared the sh*t out me... I have only 1 SRV.
So I'd recommend following those rules.

I have done all of those except ran out of fuel and not single SRV destroyed since the Horizons beta. Yet.
So, im very excited to see if it hits me at some point. :D

I've done all of those including running out of fuel and not a single SRV explosion since Horizons Beta.
Just
1. Make sure you have materials for refuelling & repairs
2. Don't drive off any cliffs.
3. Carry a spare SRV on long trips, just in case.

I've not encountered the exploding bug yet and I've done all of those things mentioned in the OP, just to see what would happen. fore-warned is for-armed after all ;)

Having said that, I have logged back on in my SRV and fallen through the planet surface. No amount of re-logging would solve it and I self-destructed. I read later on the bug forums that, if you log on and have your thrusters running full tilt, it's been known to get you back to the surface. Unfortunately, that bug has only happened once to me, so I haven't had a chance to see if the thruster workaround actually works!

Yep, I've had the exploding SRV bug happen to me one time. I put a ticket in and posted my experience in the bug thread in support. I was driving very slowly up a gentle grade, no rocks or bumps, at 91% hull when BOOM my SRV instantly incinerated. Absolutely no warning, I wasn't going more than 10 m/s.

The one rule of keeping your SRV at 97% or above is the golden rule to avoid losing your SRV instantly as the bug takes anywhere from 85% to 95% instantly.

Not had that since the beta.

The workaround is to log in a non-horizons client, which will put you back into orbit. Then you can go back in in Horizons.

Maybe some of the little stones explode as you go over them? Never know what might be lying around on the planet...

I thankfully haven't had an SRV explode on me either. Actually, I don't think I've managed to lose one yet - though until I got the hang of it I was driving fairly carefully. I'll keep it in mind, now, though, so thanks for the heads up (I wasn't even aware that there was a reported issue).

Weirdly I only read about the bug last night, so I decide to go for another drive and suddenly, EXPLOSIONS.

Maybe the bug only happens if you know about it beforehand! :D

I have had the SRV explode 3 times from bug (in 2.2mm ish). I was also one of the people to suggest the basic ,standard and premium theory but could not test it at the time as I was in NGC 1893, but have had the 'explode' happen even with basic repairs since that post.

The only thing I think was constant in all 3 explosion is, I was moving (once very fast, once very slow and once somewhere in-between) and had my cargo hatch down when travelling.

I've had 2 srv's explode, while driving without shields, just under 90% health, at about 20 m/s (and before the last patch)
Since then I've clocked about 1000 km driving flat out on various high g worlds and no more explosions. Shields on, repair when I get below 50%, and I have been damaging it a lot. It's hard to dodge those big rocks at 55 m/s after a jump and at over 3g climbing a mountain doesn't work, you end up tumbling back down, hand brake will not stop you. I usually put my cargo hatch back up if I don't forget. I've let it sit still, have let it keep on driving in camera mode, only thing I have avoided is low g planets as I get air born too easily on those, and it takes a long time for materials to come back down!

The "don't use anything except basic hull repair synthesis" thing might hold some water. If they have a corner-case bug in their code where it's supposed to make the hull twice as strong, but instead makes the hull a ton weaker than normal, that could explain it.

I will say that the overall physics of the SRV are a somewhat wonky. I've had catastrophic wrecks that take 5%-10% hull away, and minor scuffs that take 40%. Plus the whole falling through the world issue. It makes me think that the physics simulation is still just really rough around the edges and behaves badly sometimes. Kind of like Goat Simulator in Space™. ;)

That said, I've driven a lot in the past week scouting for minerals, and I've found the "surprise damage" thing basically never happens as long as you drive like grandma on a Sunday. Not the most thrilling approach, but if you're 20KLY from home and really need that boost synthesis, it's one more dead chicken to wave at the whole problem.

Iv yet to have a SRV explode on me. yesterday I rolled it down a mountain side.....again! This time I landed on my wheels & not my roof!

Im always keeping both fuel & repairs topped up, using only basic - due to the fact that Im at my 300 quota for minerals & Im trying to get a better balance of more rare materials.

Only real issue I had was the kicking from a large Mine Extraction Site, in a civvy system, when half way through collecting.

Something I've found is I take more damage on very low g (<0.2g) worlds because the thing is bouncing all over the place. I prefer to be on 0.2-1g as it is more stable.

3. Carry a spare SRV on long trips, just in case.

4. Do as I did. Collect the materials you know/suspect you will need before a long trip.
AT LEAST: 2x FSD boost (1 +1 for the return), several SRV repairs, LOTS of SRV refuels, and at least 1 AFMU restock, as well as re-arms for any weapons you may have on board.

PS. You have to be a real twit to quote yourself.

I have done more or less as you. I have 25 basic, 10 standard and 15 premium jumponium on me. SRV stuff I have a few of each but they are everywhere .

I have this issue as well. It killed one of two SRVs i had.

I had to travel 61jumps back to the bubble. It was not fun. Could Frontier reimburse us somehow? can we submit a ticket?

Eitherwise, I've made it back to the bubble got a new one and will be heading back to WP1.

I am am hoping this is a no brainier solution via submitting a ticket. 2 SRVs is starting to feel like too few.

Almost lost one yesterday on the first leg of DW, but that was entirely my fault, not a bug. Trying to descend a hellish spiky cliff on a 1.3g world that required 5 mid air repairs to survive (one at 11% hull). The terrain was so treacherous that I had to recall my ship 6 times after I reached the "flat" valley because the lumps and spikes blocked my docking bay.

I went from 20 repairs down to 11 on that little adventure. Very exciting stuff!!!

Experienced this again about 30 mins ago.

Was driving around a relatively smooth surface at a fairly reasonable speed (20), bam. Instant damage, I wasn't bounding around or anything, the surface is actually pretty smooth! Just random damage.

It's really concerning since I am already aware of this kind of thing happening so I recently repaired not 2 minutes before then from 90% health. Had I not done so, I would have certainly been destroyed since I was left with 7% hull remaining

! Never mind the fact I'm doing the Distant Worlds thing and I'm already a decent way out of the bubble! :(

Call me a pessimist or even a doom monger guys, but I am taking 4 SRVs :D

And I am thinking once we're over 20000 LYs out, and no one wants to go back for repairs, I made the right choice. Remember guys to keep one working SRV for Beagle Point!
