Community Event / Creation DIY Controller and Throttle

I'm thinking of fabricating a circuit board for DIY controller enthousiasts, to share what i've learned along the way.

- single pcb based on atmega32u4
- additional 4 channel 14-bit analog inputs, plus 4 for each connected slave board (throttle, rudder) (arduino only has 10-bit ADC)
- plug and play USB HID controller soni works on Windows, OSX, XBox, PS4, etc.
- 16 digital inputs, plus 16 per each connected slave board
- NeoPixel led driver on each board to allow full RGB led feedback.
- expandable with I2C slaves
- the firmware will be based on Arduino with full open source support
- SMT technology
- fully solderered and assembled with connectors, headers or screw terminals.

the selling point over a standard arduino will be that all pchips are connected, all ports are broken out ready for connecting switches, so no breadboard contructions.

would people be interested in such a board?

I've been afk for a while and missed this (also read through the replies).

As/when/if then yup, mark me up as interested.

Good to know! I'll keep you up to date (here) if anything changes. For now, i need to finish the woodwork. When i redesign the switch panels i may decide to get a new PCB design started to support more than 32 switches (!)

I'm really getting scared. My original goal was 'just two joysticks'. Something went wrong along the way. Perhaps I need professional help. This thing is getting out of control. If this were alcohol or drugs, my friends would have done an intervention no doubt. My house is a mess. 3D-printers, parts, tools, power drill, spare wood panels in the garage... Thousands of 'work in progress' pictures and documents (digital and printed). They say gaming is an addiction, just wait until you go hardware.

/sarcasm.

Yup it is an addiction, as soon as we finish a part, we get another idea and then the whole process starts again for that addition.
I am about done with my build but I am already thinking about what I will be adding on next. heh

I don't think there is any "Elite Rehab" for hardware addicts like us just yet Cat.
But I like to have a few beers while I listen to ol'skool heavy metal and build my stuff.
I conceder that my interim rehab, he he...

I am on my iPad, it doesn't scale pics instead it tries to upload full resolution (5k). On my Mac i use a tool to scale and upload images to imrur.com. My wordpress blog does that automatically, which is why. Somewhere in the coming days i will try to recap and add some nice images here.

When to stage an intervention??? I feel, as followers of Cat's work we have a moral obligation to intervene if this goes too far. For this reason, I would like to suggest we set some basic rules and I suggest the following:
- If Cat wants a 1:1 scale Cobra MKIII mounted on feedback hydraulics on his driveway then that is OK
- If he tries to actually make the thing fly then I think we need to take action...

Cat - Please don't take these as suggestions. The last thing I want to do is put ideas in your head :p

PS.. On a serious note... Love what you're doing. It looks        g awesome.

Haha excellent!

(On a serious note, my neighbours won't be too happy as i'm living in an apartment block with a shared driveway)

I will show my gratitude by putting up some pictures later today!

Have no fear gents, I volunteer to confiscate his project if things get out of hand :D

Looking great, has a nice flow to it.

Wow! It is looking really good! You're right Battlegrade, it has a very nice flow.
Thanks guys!

Please note that the black bits will probably soon (as in way too soon) be replaced by more extensive switch boards. I've got the technology, and I made this console to have the space.

BUT: I am so        g happy with how far i've come! I just did a few cargo mission and it felt so good. (provoking jealousy responses)

TODO
====

- make more switches on console panels
- cowl on top of triple monitors with buttons and switches
- throttle 'latch' (click halfway to support tactile reverse)
- repair 4-way hat switch on stick (one of them stopped going to the right)
- more gametime

> [haha] yeah, don't forget that part!

First draft of my navigation computer panel. What do you guys think?

I sat and stared at it for about 5 minutes trying to figure out if there was anything I would change. The only thing I could think of is moving all the red buttons / MFD to the side instead of on top. It seems you could make a larger MFD based on the boxes you're making, lots of horizontal room. Look'n pretty good!

I tried to think about that too, but to fit this button box into the panels i made i would have to make the buttons much much smaller. Right now the buttons are only 13mm x 13mm with a 5mm gap to allow electronics and lighting. the logical move would be to make it a standalone panel, even though i'm not sure how and what.

this thing will basically become some sort of macro processor. You program it to active quickcomms and set a message, or switch to 'nav' (star map) and type a system name, or a preconfigured location. I don't know how it will work together with the new 2.1 features like location markers but we will cross that bridge when we get there. The whole idea is that i can play the game without picking up a keyboard.

System will bring you back to the start screen (config, solo, exit to desktop etc.)
Prog lets you record macros
next/prev will map to UI panel left/right or to menu items
0-9 / a-z optional
the 6 '-' buttons next to the mdf are generic buttons tonactive displayed items
Exit
comms quickcomms
nav ui panel
stat ui panel
exec will send the entered text to the computer
there will be a 'keyboard' mode to allow basic pc usage.

smart keyboard it is. But no caps/shift/alt modifiers, function keys or cursor keys, most of those are already covered by the hotas and other switches.
