Community Event / Creation DIY Controller and Throttle

I've ordered the Dayton Audio TT25-16 PUCK Tactile Transducer Mini Bass Shaker 4-pack with the DTA-120 amplifier. Should be enough i think.

The bass shakers are bloody excellent. They add so much immersion. I've used a Y-splitter to get the audio to the shakers. I've then made a lowpass filter to pick out the very low effects. The LFE output from my sound ard didn't give me the best of results.

Some hires shots of the build.

Hey Cataclysm72, wonderful job so far! I am envious of your simpit and hope to build my own one day when i have the space.
In your above picture, it looks like you have a plate in place to restrict movement of your throttle to one axis, which makes sense.
I'm curious if there would be a way to have a sort of double-plate there, that you could twist, so in one mode, you have one axis for throttle, then twist and you have a twin-stick setup for dogfighting or CQC or whatever?

I'm not sure if what I'm describing makes sense...but I'll ask anyways!

Keep up the good work!

It never even crossed my mind. The plate is not there to restrict movement. The plate is there for symmetry with the joystick. This throttle may look like a stick but mechanically it will only move forwards or backwards. The axle is made tight and clamped so it stays where you put it (like a powerboat throttle). This in steep contrast to the joystick (right) which has an auto centering and is pretty light to the tough. The mechanics under the hood are very distinct.

Thanks for the compliments!

Subscribing to the thread so I can follow along. I just posted a rather long guide detailing what I did to build my simpit but I'm not nearly as insane as you are as I used off-the-shelf parts. I skimmed through this thread pretty quickly given it's 30 pages - am I right that it's not quite finished yet and you're still building the individual pieces? Is there a page somewhere that has up to date pictures all in one place?

Can't wait to see the finished product, so far it's extremely impressive!!!

First off: thanks!

I've been working on this project for over a year, i actually got to the point where playing the game is overtaking the updates on the cockpit. There is some stuff that i'm trying to figure out like the navigation console and a more modular approach to the switch panels. My body feels old and sore it needs some relaxation.

Working on some new ideas for my simpit. I want to get a stronger frame. And I want to have something to hang on to while I pull myself out of my chair. So I designed a rack/rollcage. (Red for design only, it'll be spraypainted black of course)

Ideas? Suggestions?

Perhaps a bit more wider at the monitor sides so you can shroud/enclose it in black lycra. ;)
Which is where I am headed with my pit.
Actually i have another concept in mind, but good thinking. The front side is to stop the monitors from swiveling. With my original two-pole-and-wood setup the screens tend to yaw when i press buttons on the console i put in front the screens. Widening the posts should stop that effect. Another solution would be to separate the panels from the display like flight sims do. But even then i need some sort of construction i can use to push/pull myself in and out of the seat.

I am working towards making this in aluminium. It will have analog hall effect sensors and adjustable tension.

Wowzers Cat, I am but impressed!
Just made an account to tell you how impressed I am.

I came across your thread as I am looking to make a joystick of my own then got carried along with your build and ended up reading through the whole thing.

One thing I (and no doubt many others) would like to see is this fantastic creation inaction. Any chance you could make a video of yourself actually playing Elite with it? Possibly a GoPro on a hat or something. Doesn't have to be anything fancy, I just want to live the experience of seeing this cockpit being used.

Keep up the good work though, you are an inspiration.

Hehe, just saw my name by my own post:

"Mostly Harmless".
That's cute ;)

Thanks for posting that last video Cat. I've been poring over your plans and have been trying to parse what's going on and that video has made things a lot clearer.

In this frame:

I take it we're looking at the components listed on ThingiVerse assembled:

I'm assuming the different coloured components are arranged like this:

In particular is the white piece not shown on on ThingiVerse?

And is there a small bering placed on the red pimple that is being pressed down by the bottom corner of the brown block?

Also, I assume the hexagonal holes in the brown block are to capture bolt heads which are used to bolt the two halves of the block together and thus clasp the shaft of the joystick:

But what is the 'mouth' cut-out of the smilie face in the brown block for?

And in this frame a little later on:

I take it we are basically looking at the same thing with the bottom of the blue block pushing down on the red bearing:
Gimbal-frame_1-paint.png

And finally at the end of the clip we see the other side of the blue piece:
Gimbal-frame_2.png

But what is the idea of that tab on the bottom of the blue piece?

The reason I'm asking all this is I am considering trying to build the same assembly at about 3X the size using plate steel and I'm trying to workout if it's feasible.

Cheers,
Slarti.

Slarti, that was a very intense comparison between my gimbal from last year compared to something i made last week. That latest video is an ipdate to an old configuration.

Sorry, are you saying the video is old or the CAD models are old?
I'm trying to work out how to build one of these myself and am doing my best to piece it all together.

Cheers,
:)
