DIY Head Tracker For A Tenner

I'll be looking over my shoulder within 6-8 minutes. I never used to have this issue, I could play for a good hour before having to manually reset.

Will having auto centre on help?

Hey chap... it should do, yes, stick it on "low" and if it's still drifting off in 10 minutes, the calibration must be off (or there's some other issue)...

Just to ensure it's on the radar... A "Start Minimised" option would be great in the UI. ie: It could then just be put in the "Start Up" folder to run at bootup, and no further interaction would be required.

Turns you can do this with Windows already. Properties, Shortcut, Run: Minimised.

No matter how many times i calibrate, restore to factory settings, change orientation etc. i still get rubberbanding on left-right head movement on latest software :(

If you're not already, try calibrating it in the final position you intend to use it - so attach it to headset and do the twirly thing in roughly the seating position you intend to use it. It's not near the earcups is it?

You can also do the gyro biases with it on your noggin - we don't really recommend this as you have to keep real still, of course, but it can be done :)

I've followed your instructions, but i still get rubberbanding (I've made stand from chairs to calculate bias in working position ;). Tracker is mounted on top of head. Here are screenshots from software.

I just set mine up with the new firmware without issues, so its all good for me; just a thought I notice your sensitivity slider is all the way to the left, did you try to move that before the calibration sequence..? Could be a missed step is all I was thinking...

Got to say, that looks spot on to me :( can't think why that would be doing what you're saying. Did you adjust the sensitivity slider on the magnetometer at all - it sometimes needs to be over to the middle a bit more, but having said that, the "blobs" look fine, other than there's rather a lot of them :)

It's rubber banding in-game right, not just the GUI?

If you bought it from us, drop us a line on the email of whoever built your device, and we'll sort it out for you one way or another ;)

Honestyl i don't have idea what's going on. I would love to provide some logs or something to help finding issue but i don't know if that's possible. As for slider, it resets position after saving calibration. It was set to around 2/3 or 3/4 to the right.
Only thing i can think of is that maybe board is flipped 180 degrees so chipset is facing downwards. I don't remember how i've built it. As default i have up/down motion inverted. However i don't think that it should be an issue, as on pre 4.0x it worked just fine.

Edit: It occurs both in software and in games.

Is there any known problems with the 9150 version, i have had 2 now from the Edtracker.org website, (one was a replacement for the first faulty one.)

The first one i got, worked for around 20 mins then just stopped working, and when restarting software i got a not connected head screen in the gui, even though it said connected just above the head in white.

This was promptly replaced as i sent it back, now the replacement is not working either, i get exactly the same screen as above.
I have the latest drivers and v4 GUI from the website, i also still have a working 6150 model that i can connect to and use with the same drivers and software, so my old one still works, new 9150 does not.
I get the Edtracker 2 icon as a joystick in my devices, but it does not work as a joystick.
I have tried it on both my laptop, and my PC rig, same on both, 6150 works ok, 9150 does not. weird or wot, is there something else i need to do.

Old 6150 version works on same usb lead and computer.

Thinking out the box a little, if you flash the 6050 firmware into it, does it work fine? ie. is it something to do with the 9150 firmware specifically over the 6050?

I've did that. It's not calibrated very well though, i have bit unstable temperature in the room. I get some additional movement but it's rather minor and to me it seems like result of calibration (drift jumping all over place).
On the other hand i think that i've just pinpointed source of problems. I'll do some test and i will write another post later.

be really great if you guys come up with a solution, dead fred emailed me and said the one i sent back is working normally, so can't understand why it is only my 2 computers with the problem, could it be because i had the 6050 instaled first. i will try flashing 9150 to 6050, and see it that works. though still getting unhandled exception error too, especially if i try reflashing. And is it normal when flashing te box says kicking port and mentions looking for com 6, (different port to one assigned usually) then trys re installing drivers also when flashing.

Edit: tried flashing to 6050 as suggested, all i get is this, (had to close program with task manager afterwards) so i can't even fllash it. Also to note, i have tried using usbdeview on both my computers, and un installed all usb drivers, and let windows re install them all on reboot, then manually installed the latest arduino drivers (1.5.8). still nothing works with the 9150, but 6050 continues to work as it should.

EDIT 2: finally it excepted the flash command, i flashed to 2.20.7 sketch. but still the same, all i get is saying connected above head, which changes to disconnected when i try to connect. as it still says not connected in larger box at the top.
Tried flashing back to 9150, and still is the same, not connected, strange that i can hear the driver chime load as i plug it in, and the drivers says it is working ok in the devices panel.
I dont have any other joysticks or devices plugged into my laptop, so it should at least work on that, both are on windows 7 by the way.

Drop me a PM with your email, and maybe we could do a remote Google Hangout session with me seeing exactly what's happening at the time, and we can work through it and see if I get any ideas? Like you say, it would be good to understand what the problem is with your setup so it can help in the future, if someone else gets the same thing. We have had a few instances - and we are really talking fingers on one hand here - where we've had devices returned faulty, checked them, they're absolutely fine, but devices just won't work on a particular user's PC. We've put that down to some issue with the customer's hardware or OS install, refunded, and left it amicably there - but you've got this on 2 PCs which does seem at least consistent... so fingers crossed we can figure out what it is. I'm pushing for some more detailed logging in the GUI, which could be used for issues like this, so hopefully we can get that added at some point which will help.

Sure, anything i can do to help solve this is fine, i will continue to work with you guys for a while to solve this, both for me and others, i will pm you my email.
#Also just noticed this, not sure if it is a clue to conflict with 6050 i have been using.

This is my driver devices panel with 6050 plugged in.

Notice the 9150 is showing both trackers.
(the wireless device is just my wireless mouse adapter, and is all i have plugged in with this laptop)

The main thing that is common to both my computers is that they are both an Acer windows install. As my laptop is the Acer 5552, and my pc rig was originally an acer, but now only has the hard drive and memory left from the acer, but still uses the original acer install windows 7 discs and files.
