DLC guessing game: Autumn 22

We did something like this before the NA dlc, so let's do it again. So here's how the game goes.

We know half the roster of the upcoming DLC:
1. Raccoon
2. Skunk
3. Wombat
4. Red fox - hinted
5. ?
6. ?
7. ?
8. ? (Exhibit)

So, everyone guesses the rest of the roster. The person closest to the actual roster will get eternal glory and a picture of a raccoon in a hat.

Go!

Hmm. All 4 of those species are found in woodlands and are also nocturnal, so the rest have to fit and match along those lines. Hmm...

Ok, everybody is saying piebald deer, aka the whitetail, so imma go with a whitetail.

Also, a forest animal could be the bear. Which? Well, the 3 remaining bears are found in forests, but I'd go with the ABB, just because it's my favorite.

Now, what else? Wild boar is good and a woodlands and nocturnal animal (well,. I guess crepuscular, since I've seen them mostly around dawn and dusk). So, boar.

For the exhibit, it HAS to be something an educator will handle. But what? Some kinda reptile, I'm assuming. Maybe the chameleon.

So, the remaining 4 are:

  1. Whitetail deer
  2. American black bear
  3. Wild boar
  4. Panther chameleon (E)

Oh do I sure hope not... replace the Boar and the Wombat, and you'd be able to call it the North America Common As Dirt Animal Pack. Actually no, you could keep the boar, couldn't you? They are an invasive species here...

Not necessarily. Red fox is native all over the northern hemisphere. If you're going the whole invasive route, then they invaded Australia as well. Also, the racoon is invasive in Europe.

So, that's not really a great argument there

I’m so on board with this personally. I was genuinely expecting to never see any more North American species after its first pack, and now we’ve got 3+ on the way. And I do agree that white-tailed deer, American black bear, and wild boar seem to fit the current lineup super well. Honestly it even feels like a “safer” bet than anything else I try and come up with. Still, for the sake of doing something different:
  1. Striped skunk
  2. Common wombat
  3. Red fox
  4. Raccoon
  5. North island brown kiwi
  6. Fossa
  7. White-tailed deer
Yeah, the more I think on the piebald thing the more I feel like this deer is coming. But at least this lineup would keep things from being TOO northern hemisphere temperate forest heavy.

It's not really an argument, just throwing it out there... regardless, that's still five animals that can qualify as North American...

  1. Striped skunk
  2. Common wombat
  3. Red fox
  4. Raccoon
  5. North island brown kiwi
  6. Fossa
  7. White-tailed deer
I'm confused... what is even the theme here? What unites these animals?

(shutters) ...oh please no... of all the American animals and all the deer in the world, why something so pitifully ordinary it makes vanilla look exotic?

I personally am quite excited for the whitetail, despite how common or "ordinary" they seem.

They have the largest range of any deer, from NA to SA, are highly adaptable to woodlands, grasslands, and tropical forests, and are essential to NA.

Also, the theme seems to hint to either nocturnal or woodlands

I thought my intent of making a nocturnal list was fairly obvious, but I just double checked and I see that fossa apparently aren’t strictly nocturnal. And while it might seem weird to have a nocturnal pack without the Tasmanian devil, I’m honestly not sure if I expect another species that requires a completely new rig. I expect that the fossa can utilize the lynx/clouded leopard rig, and the kiwi can use a modified ostrich/cassowary rig, but the Tasmanian devil would have to be 100% unique and I’m not sure if this is the pack for it.

All that being said, I feel like a woodlands theme feels likelier than nocturnal at this point to me.

Personally I feel most attempts at constructing a nocturnal pack with popular terrestrial animals feel forced.

Taz devils, sloths and the rest are not strictly nocturnal.

A "true" nocturnal pack that reflects nocturnal houses in zoos should have bats, owls, and nocturnal specialists like Galagos, Lorises, Aye-aye and so on.

A bunch of animals which are strictly extremely nocturnal, and in no way very popular.

I'm going to go on the idea that this will be a "Small Worlds" or small animal pack rather than a woodland or nocturnal pack. The campfire theme is a red herring.

1. Raccoon
2. Skunk
3. Wombat
4. Red fox - The piebald morph screams fox to me
5. Another Oceanian animal. Eastern quoll, wallaby, or kiwi, but the quoll probably makes the most sense and would be a great wildcard pick.
6. A duck or pheasant. Some kind of ground bird that works without flight.
7. The wildcard slot. A monkey? A small cat? A dwarf goat?
8. Some kind of lizard, probably a gecko or chameleon

That’s tough the main question to try to figure out is nocturnal or woodlands type dlc? I think a scary animal Halloween theme is out. If it’s nocturnal it gets very hard to predict the last 3 open slots if guesses were right for the 4. It would be hard to believe a Tasmanian devil would be left out. I do believe if it is it will appear in a future pack tho so for fans no reason to worry. I think a forest type pack has more interesting choices personally and is a little easier to narrow down possible animals. I think a black bear, wild boar, red deer, porcupine, ect have a shot. A nocturnal is much more unpredictable which definitely fits frontiers style a bit so it’s pretty hard to guess really.

Personally, I think the next DLC will be about temperate woodlands (the presence of typical animals like racoons, skunk and red fox is very suggestive; apart of the fact that wombats can live in temperate biomes). For that reason, this is my list:

1. Racoon (Procyon lotor) (North America; Grassland, Tropical, Temperate and Taiga biomes)
2. Striped Skunk (Mephitis mephitis) (North America; Desert?, Grassland, Temperate and Taiga biomes)
3. Commom Wombat (Vombatus ursinus) (Oceania; Tropical?, Temperate biomes)
4. Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) (North America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania?; all biomes?)*
5. Wild Boar (Sus scrofa) (Europe, Asia, Africa; Desert?, Grassland, Temperate and Taiga? biomes)*
6. White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) (North America and South America; Desert, Grassland, Tropical, Temperate and Taiga biomes)
7.A bird from the Phasianidae family (Golden Pheasant, Wild Turkey, Western Capercaillie)
8. I don't have any idea... perhaps a lizard?

About habitat animals: Wild boars are common animals in european forests and can fit with the thematic. White-tailed deers could be part of the DLC because they can be piebald, and are present both North and South American forests. A bird could be great, specially from the Phasianidae family, because we need more land birds if the aviary mechanics are not available in the medium term. Finally, if there was a chance, i would like to see the spectacled bear.

* Because of their wide distribution, the developers could add specific subspecies

I see lot of speculation on White-Tailed Deer.
Personally i hope the devs would go for a asian cervid like a Sika deer, Muntjak or Water deer.
I know that we already have a lot of Asian animals. But at least the first two are quite common in zoo's.
And if it turns out to be a nocturnal pack. Then i hope they wil include a Kiwi, as the only one i ever saw in a zoo was in a nighthouse.
(pardon any spelling mistakes, i'm not used to write in English)

Temperate Forest pack:
Striped Skunk
Raccoon
Red Fox
Wombat
Kiwi
White Tailed Deer (because of the piebald)
Wild Boar
Any exhibit (perhaps a snake)

It is including just species from NA, Europe and Oceania but I could imagine a tropical rainforest pack in the future.
