DLC18 discussion and predictions

Well the last 2 unlocked streams had reminders put out on the Saturday prior to the stream, so we should see frontier post some sort of "tune in this Wednesday" reminder about the stream tomorrow. Really hope they say Planet zoo when listing what's gonna be there this time 🙏 I do expect it seeing as the console bundle will definitely be announced, but also hoping for some PZ PC news 🤞
Well... That tweet never came over the weekend, hah. And given the UK bank holiday today we probably won't have any idea what's on the agenda until tomorrow.

But at this point, given the lack of Outsource_LQA, I'm pretty sure we won't get much of anything. I guess there's hope for another similar, vague mention of something coming out this year... But I suspect we won't get that unless there's something coming in late September/early October. The ideal scenario would be them reminding us that there's another animal pack on the way and it'll be ready "in the coming weeks" or something. I just don't think they'd get that specific.

It's now been 4+ months since the last DLC announcement and just shy of 4 months since the 1-2 sentence mention of a next DLC during that one stream that they might say something along those lines again. Just so wild to go this long without news.

If it's a Primate Pack with 7 slots, what would you put in it?
  • Black howler monkey
  • Golden lion tamarin
  • Cotton-top marmoset
  • Aye-aye
  • Sifaka
  • Black-and-white colobus monkey
  • Silver leaf langur
Acknowledging how likely the hamadryas baboon is, I've left that one out because personally? It's just not that big a deal to me in contrast to these 7. Hah.

I got to be honest I am not the type to care too much, I just want more. But I want some “vibes” to be filled, especially ones that haven’t been filled yet.
  • I need a tamarin species, or at least some type of small monkey. Not just for South America sections, but in general these small monkeys are useful for fleshing out areas and filling empty space.
  • I honestly want another lemur, it can be the safika, aye-aye, or even the collared lemur. I just think another would be nice.
  • We need more South American monkeys, and a true and proper African monkey. I don’t care what these two species are, but I would like theme. I suppose I will highlight the white faced saki and debrazzas monkey.

Yeah same for me .I dont care much about specific species, i just want more monkey.
Low key ones especially. Just give me any that have a decent captive presence and im happy. As far as monkeys in PZ go beggars cant be chosers

Which is why the rhesus macaque has slowly crept its way up my monkey wishlist.
Somewhat common, very lowkey and pretty versatile as far as regions and biome go

I think this late in the game, every animal added should be versatile with the exceptions of:
  • Top of the top of requested animals (coati, tree kangaroo, Secretary bird etc.)
  • Extreme classic/meme types (Pallas' Cat comes to mind)
  • Animals from regions not represented well (Patagonia, Himalayan hoofstock, tropical Asian antelope)
  • Broad Animals Types not in game yet (lagomorph)

After visiting the NY Aquarium, Central Park Zoo, and the Bronx Zoo, I genuine think something like a tropical house dlc would be my most needed/ favorite. Obviously it’s not gonna happen at this point, but man after visiting a real zoo it’s just crazy how much this part of the game is lacking. I think this is also a situation of a little can go a long way, obviously limiting myself to 8 animals is hard but not impossible.
  1. White faced saki
  2. Black and White Colobus
  3. Tree kangaroo
  4. White faced whistling duck
  5. Scarlet ibis
  6. Yellow billed stork
  7. Victoria crowned pigeon
  8. Exhibit: anything, pick your poison
Also, yeah the bird thing is silly. Just add to the groups that already exist in game:
  • A new flamingo
  • A new crane, and a stork can be added
  • Gamebirds/ groundbirds/ pheasants
  • A new penguin
  • Some new waterfowl of course
Sometimes going to a real zoo just feels like a reminder of what I don’t have to play with in game, even if they already exist in some form 😑

Welcome to the Jungle World stan club! I love that whole building so much. It was great when I was a kid and it's held up so well over the years...

That pack is fun and all but what I really wanted to say here is that I've always wished that Frontier had "mixed up" their pack formats a bit. It could have led to more interesting and useful scenery pieces, less stress on species picks, and so on. If they mostly focused on regions and biomes for full-blown animal packs and instead had more "zoo building"-forward scenery pack themes/names (e.g., tropical house, aviary, nocturnal building, aquarium, educational, and so on) it could have led to a very different game in a satisfying way.

Basically, what I'm saying is: If we ever get a sequel then I hope the DLC formula is a bit less rigid and they can lean into the "zoo" thing a bit more. I really do love most of the scenery pieces but there's more than a few packs where I'm left wishing some of the hyper-themed pieces were swapped out for more "generic" zoo items. Like, I still think it's a travesty that Twilight didn't come with backdrops for interiors with like, a starry night sky, or some sort of new lighting rig. Both of those would have probably been easier than, say, the spider-web table or cauldron, to create... And would have been SO much more useful.

Great pack idea with good picks, we really should have gotten more relevant packs for zoos like a nocturnal house pack. Personally I'd try and get a Tamarin in there although I'm not sure what I would get rid of for it

  • Black Howler Monkey
  • Coquerel's Sifaka
  • Spider Monkey
  • Colobus Monkey
  • DeBrazza's Monkey
  • Gelada
  • Golden Snub Nosed Monkey [We need a monkey for Chinas player base]

Yeah while I love some of the pieces for twilight, tropical, Arctic, etc. they still leave much to be desired for a basic zoo building game. A bit more “amusement park” and a bit less “zoo”.

Like to this day I still desperately want some animal parts for pieces, that way I can add some educational elements to my zoo. Not to mention some of the super themed scenery pieces I often just have no idea what to use them for.

For the exhibit animal for the Tropical House Animal Pack, what if instead there's no exhibit, and we get tropical decoration's, and some iconic tropical plants.

I think one of the biggest features we are missing for a zoo builder is a map generator, all zoos have maps but we have no easy way to make them in game. Even if they can only be generated in one style I would really appreciate it and this is one my most wanted features for a free update or sequel

It’s honestly criminal how good parts of Jungle World look. Especially when it opens to the other side of a waterfowl and you can see the langur family and some ducks. Also the gharial habitat is just chefs kiss

Personally I was amazed by the quality of the Congo Basin area. The theming, the use of design, the way they make you “wind through a forest”. Not to mention great looking habitats and everything about it is just so cool.

The biggest flaw with some of the earlier packs, and I'm mostly thinking about the first three here, is that the developers thought they knew what players wanted. So many of those earlier sets could have been cooler if they had (a) more flexicolor pieces and additional channels for pieces that were flexi; (b) not assumed people only wanted to "build big" and provide smaller pieces for detailing and allowed in some "smaller" species from the jump; and (c) known that people were going to want to build relatively realistic zoos.

And you can see how they adapted/adjusted their approach based on feedback over time. It started with Aquatic, then truly peaked with the Europe pack and mostly maintained until Barnyard (which was technically an Animal pack so whatever). There have been a few blips with Twilight and Oceania back toward that old style but it's kinda obvious why that happened (double-dipping with PC2 assets).

But all that said? I do really think that different pack themes or smaller, hyper-focused scenery-only packs between bigger DLCs would have been really cool as far as fleshing things out go. Imagine themes like Parks & Gardens, Environmental Education, Guest Entertainment, or Backstage and what those might have added (priced lower than a typical DLC as they are scenery-only, of course). Or, like the way this conversation started... Working in some of those elements with different theme "types" for packs that focus on different buildings/aspects of a zoo.

I'm not sure if these approaches would be profitable. But I can't help but wonder if the focus on region and biome was limiting in any way... And weirdly, much more so for the scenery rather than the animals.

What's most impressive is that it opened in 1985 and it still maintains as a great set of habitats! It's not without its flaws but its still my favorite to this day. It's honestly the reason I'm as obsessed with zoos as I am. It's the first time I recall being at a zoo and thinking about the way the habitats were designed. The Bronx Zoo on the whole does a really nice job with theming when they opt to go that route. In particular Jungle World, the Congo Basin, and Tiger Mountain are stellar. That zoo in general is realllyy amazingg but those stand out from a theming perspective...

What's fun is that I actually think you could re-create most of those in Planet Zoo if you really wanted to (obviously with replacement species or mods). But man, thinking about it now, I really wish we had bigger mangrove tree roots that otters could run between...
