It's not the barnyard pack it's the sales associated to the console version release. Actually it's a very low peak of player for barnyard pack and very short in time. Such a shame cause the pack had a couple of nice animals and features in the update. It probably came too late in the game life cycle. Perfect definition of good pack bad timing. After scanning through the steam db data we still 5 years in haven't reached a point where the player base is consistently at its lowest the lowest month in terms of active players was October of 2020 followed by this month then September of 2021.
The active players have been an almost straight line and very consistent since the games start with spikes on weekends and pack releases. It is also interesting that barnyards release has had the biggest impact on the player count since tropical.
Planet zoo is still doing fairly well and other than being in the way of other newer titles it has no obvious reasons to be stopping at least not popularity wise.
You are correct the sale was the same month as barnyard so it raised the monthly rate by alot didnt notice it until I went smaller on the scale. honestly thats more significant though because higher rates during a sale means more new and paying people playing the game which is looks better for long term support. But barnyard animal pack has like 2nd least player peak out of all packs. You must have mistaken it with big sale, which happened a month before it.
I agree, I think barnyard pack has a very bad case of “suffering from success”. Not that it itself is a S tier pack, it isn’t. But Planet Zoo has done so well for itself, and people playing the game were expecting/ wanting something else at the time. There was a certain level of expectation, both from current needs (monkeys and birds) and from the meta wishlist. If barnyard came out 2-3 years ago it probably wouldn’t have faced even half the criticism it got, as expectations would be different. Likewise, barnyard was another ungulate heavy pack which came out after a year of being super ungulate heavy. Now it makes a ton of sense why a barnyard pack is ungulate heavy, but the lack of a duck or bunny is felt. The chicken does make up for this a little bit, but not enough in my opinion. It's not the barnyard pack it's the sales associated to the console version release. I don't think the animal choice would have been less UK heavy 2-3 years ago. I also don't think they would not have been lazy with sound work 2-3 years ago...I agree, I think barnyard pack has a very bad case of “suffering from success”. If someone doesn’t care about petting zoo animals that’s like 8 or 9 months without content.
I mean in all fairness at this point any pack can do that:I just don’t understand if they were gonna leave us for 6+ months without a DLC, why not have the most recent pack be something more people would accept. If someone doesn’t care about petting zoo animals that’s like 8 or 9 months without content. Why not give us something like the Oceania pack or tropical pack in Spring 2024 and have barnyard last year when we knew we had more packs coming.
At this stage of the game life it doesn't matter for the devs. Probably they consider it won't make a huge difference on the benefits of the last DLC pack of PZ. I didn't open the game since the barnyard pack (not even bought it). But I guess the large majority of the DLC buyers community bought it and will simply buy the next pack.I just don’t understand if they were gonna leave us for 6+ months without a DLC, why not have the most recent pack be something more people would accept. Yes but I think wild and exotic animals in general would please people more than farm animals, regardless of where they come from.I mean in all fairness at this point any pack can do that:
- Want South American animals? Any pack without them won’t do it for you.
- Need monkeys? A pack without monkeys would be a waste to you.
- Birds? Do I need to say anything?
- Really want ungulates? Then a full bird pack/ monkey pack/ anything without ungulates would be worthless.
It was and is the most filler pack of Planet Zoo. The next pack is clearly and probably going to have a huge roster. A filler pack + 6 extra months gurantees a bigger pack for us to enjoy and I think the animal picks are very community liking. I think it will be worth the time and we will have an amazing pack that fills our roster up 200+ animals.I mean in all fairness at this point any pack can do that:
Though I do agree, the Barnyard pack feels like a pack that should have came out awhile ago. Obviously what you said is true as well, if you have no interest in domestics it will do absolutely nothing for you. Not even a Muscovy duck or guineafowl to round it off. Part of me wonders, even with the free update, that Barnyard was intentionally picked due to the workload of the next pack. Wonderful free update aside, it feels like it was an “easy pack”.

Anyone who still thinks we are getting a bigger pack because of the longer wait is just setting themselves up for disappointment. Don't do that, expect a boring animal pack and we won't have all the drama here like with the barnyard announcement.

I mean I do agree, but I don’t think a lot of people would be happy with another arid type pack with even more Africa ungulates. At least barnyard had a “different type of ungulate” that makes them a bit different to build for. I know I for one would be a bit miffed if I saw this next dlc had like 3 new antelopeYes but I think wild and exotic animals in general would please people more than farm animals, regardless of where they come from.
Yeah alot of people seem way to confident that the next/final pack is going to be an absolute banger with a larger roster. Which is a possibility i guess but the most sensible and realistic thing to expect is just a normal animal pack along side of barnyard, arid and eurasia, so 5-6 go to ungulates and carnivorans and everything else has to share the other 1-2 habitat slots as per usual.Anyone who still thinks we are getting a bigger pack because of the longer wait is just setting themselves up for disappointment. I don't really expect any birds or monkeys lol, just a bigger pack but yes I do expect at least one or planet zoo is high right now. Birds, you add them or not thats fine but the animal picks should be frontier level of stuff if there's just a secretary bird in the last pack.Yeah alot of people seem way to confident that the next/final pack is going to be an absolute banger with a larger roster. Everyone who is expecting a bunch of birds and monkeys is setting themselves up for dissapointment
I think the Barnyard pack has fared pretty well in this regard, though. The workshop was flooded with new, farm-based blueprints for a long while and the YouTubers really embraced it. Which makes sense considering that it added a new dynamic to building that wasn't there before. Which is more than we can say for most DLC and updates, TBH. I actually think the timing for Barnyard makes sense in the end. It was probably a simple pack to put together from a research perspective, the animals were all right in their own backyard, etc. And it probably bought them time to work on whatever pack is coming next...I just don’t understand if they were gonna leave us for 6+ months without a DLC, why not have the most recent pack be something more people would accept. I’m expecting something like that, but I’m just hoping that it could be different. Frontier uses ungulates as a pack filler, but they could swap to using some birds. Either way, I’m trying to keep my hopes down. It’s funny because the long wait is actually both helping and making it worse.Yeah alot of people seem way to confident that the next/final pack is going to be an absolute banger with a larger roster. Im expecting exactly that, bunch of ungulates and a bear and cat, so it can only go up from here![]()
