Do NOT get a "free" Steam key if you want to support Frontier

Yes yes I know, no one's disputing that. I am purely saying that a 30% cut is not a made up figure like you claimed.

Why not just leave it at that?

Yes, I am a premium beta tester and I don't see a reason to link to Steam. I would rather give future money to hard working folks in FD. Just look at these typos in beta texts now. They are working during nights obviously with little sleep :)

Meh, seems daft to me that you have to measure your enjoyment by time played rather than just enjoying the game.

And to me it would seem daft that one would stop oneself from using a convenient service like Steam just because of some misguided loyalty to a game company. Yet I at least have the decency of not openly questioning why one would do such a thing.
If FD agree to give me free stuff, I'll take it. The cost is obviously not too high for the survival of their company or even the game, or else they would just say no.

If only there was some kind of non PC based device that could not only tell us the time of day but could also be used to record the passage of time...

Convenience. Steam built their whole business model on convenience, and they are good at it. Why would I bother with manually keeping track of the time spent playing, when Steam can do it for me, and at no cost except the 120MB of memory Steam takes up?

This is my only response to Steam, and has not changed since the outset of the service. They (Steam) will have to tear my box copies out of my cold dead hands ;)

Were talking about people that have been backing this game since release, or beta, or earlier, that already own the game.

Exactly, and how much more exposure would non-elite playing people have to this game if they see you playing it whilst looking over their steam friends list? Quite a bit.

Due to playing Elite on STEAM I have had quite a bit of attention from friends asking about it and I have successfully helped (in my own little way) sell an additional three copies. Imagine if that was recreated by 10% of all Elite players?

Personally I have a lot of love for STEAM, it is a decent service and one that brings with it lots of benefits imho.

In spite of my attempt at humour I do get the convenience argument and if that's the main criteria for you or anyone else that's your call.

I don't know why they took the timer we used to have out of ED but keeping track of my game time isn't a thing for me.

dude i told you its a part of business you go out now and buy something from a store that store is getting a cut again part of business   and i thought sto player had entitlement issues
Yes, and people don't mind that.

What people mind is IF steam gets a cut when steams service is not used to purchase something.
The store getting a cut if you bought something directly from the business that created it, and is wrong?

And that's why clarification is needed, please stop with this whole 'people hate steam' yes some do, but the vast majority at least as far as I can read, just want clarification and are NOT ok with steam getting a cut if steam is not used to purchase items with.

funny i dont get that from the title of this thread or the OP as you pointed out you got the option to use it or not go with you heart and come off this podium you and others have built out of a 2X4

So, just to clarify;

If I activate a key on Steam, Valve will take a cut of any future purchase I make, regardless of whether I purchase it thorugh store.elitedangerous.com or steam.elitedangerous.com ?

If so, that's kind of silly.

Podium? sorry?

Right now there is no option to unlink your account if you linked it to steam, I did because I read it as I stated? however I would very much like clarification? and so most others seem to indicate in this and other threads, OP might dislike steam, I cannot say, all I read from his post is he dislikes steam getting a 30% cut from all activity done from this moment on, something which I too dislike.

And so I post my thoughts, while it seems though that you keep wanting to hang on to 'steam is allowed to do this' and that steam isn't doing anything wrong, and no, they are not, they are a business. They can fairly claim a cut for providing their service, however, that is the main point of what I'm writing, IF steam is taking a cut when there service is NOT used to buy something then that is a problem?

I'm fairly sure that the distinct jump in revenue they had from sales on Steam was worth it.

Certainly the 5 or 6 copies that Steam friends have bought based on my recommendations now that I have a Steam key have paid Frontier more than I would reasonably spend in paint jobs, and as a backer, I front-loaded my commitment to future expansions.

you take steam out of the https://steam.elitedangerous.com/ bam you got it from ED and did not use steam

You aren't even reading what people are writing it seems...

I wrote, that I claimed my steam key, because I read the post they made as if you buy from steam.elitedangerous.com then steam gets a cut, however if you buy from store.elitedangerous.com then frontier gets it all, however is that how it is meant? there seems to be a lot of confusion, and that people including OP believe that it was meant that steam will get a cut of ALL future purchases regardless of where they are from, this is what people want clarification on.

Because IF steam gets a cut even if you buy addons and whatnot from store.elitedangerous.com then that is wrong.

Wow, someone posting about STO and dev information there. Craptic/PWE were well known for not providing information to players. But those forums have too many trolls they refuse to do anything about.

But as to this topic, based on what we know, Steam will get a cut on purchases where accounts are linked. But that's just the price of doing business with another gaming platform.

How many more threads are we gonna get on steam keys if this keeps up FD will have to give them their own forum section, its personal choice not brand loyalty. For me its easier to have all my games under one system than having them scattered all over the internet under loads of different usernames and passwords. Steam is convenient for most of us to use of course it is, some hate it because its seen as a big company leeching off of small companies. Maybe they do but they at least provide a service for said cut much better service than these 'free to play' games.

I do not have brand loyalty mainly because I see that sort of concept tying you to a particular system, company etc and I like to see what everyone is doing and then make up my mind.

It is and is what Ed clearly intimated was happening. It's for this reason alone a lot of people are not getting their keys. They have obviously an arrangement with Valve they can live with which is fine and people can use their keys which most casual players will and that's fine.

Keeps track of your hours, you can leave a positive review of the game for other steam users to see before they buy and hitting f12 in game automatically screenshots and sends it to your steam account where it can be uploaded and shared.
So, micro stuff.

From my point of view, this interpretation is in line with Michael Brookes' comment in Mid-April...

"... turning EliteDangerous.com customers into Steam customers unfortunately isn't 100 percent our decision and isn’t free for us in the context of the game’s ongoing growth and development."
Thanks! I've added that to my first post :)

P.S. I'm somewhat amused & saddened that some people think I'm pushing a conspiracy theory! I can understand doubt about my facts, but saying I'm definitely wrong is somewhat bizarre.
