Does Elite Dangerous need FPS content?

To each their own.

In my case, ED is about flying ship but also about the journey of my CMDR, exploring the galaxy and discovering new vista. I'll be more than happy to do it on foot and be able to pew-pew from time to time. Even though they promoted a lot FPS gameplay (to attract new players) it will only be a part of Odysser like combat is actually to the base game. You'll have the choice to do what you want so...whatever float your boat...if you're more into exploration you'll be able to do it without a gun :)

I don't think there's a definitive right or wrong answer, as a skilled craftsman should be able to make this permutation work and feel whole.

I personally can't see a need at all for the combat part of it. Given the rest of the game, feels like a terrible misapplication of ideas in the one software application. Maybe that's why they decided not to connect it to the space game via ship interiors. Or maybe that's what they need to do to make it work.

There will be no campaign (until there is one). So you're going to be doing the same things, raising minor faction rep, earning credits, doing a bit of roleplay but on fps instead of the srv. It will probably match the same as you do srv missions. For me its about 3% of my play time, probably less. But that's because of the bugs.

Lol, can you imagine the "frontier" bugs for fps.. no no no...

EDIT: Also its interesting state of SRV gameplay.. frontier might have made a pass or two at it, and removed exploits, but its largely been abandoned since it was released. I feel like frontier consider SRV gameplay as a core pillar of elite like the other roles. In hindsight this is a bit strange because it was the main point of horizons. Wonder if fps is going to end up like srv gameplay, or become another real foundation to the game. Should be fun to watch.

Frontier in the past have alternated between pacifist and combat development efforts, and the last few years were all non combat features, so i guess this is the combat turn. Makes sense from that standpoint as well.

Everyones just going to be material gathering or racing with legs, and picking up missions on spaceports! That will be the killer app.

Think of it a different way. "Does one of my favourite games need a constant stream of new players to make it worth the developer putting time effort and money into it?" - (Maybe I'm biased, I'm really looking forward to Odyssey, even though I'm desperate to walk around inside my ship I realise the success of this is what may eventually allow it)

On-foot FPS, sure, as long as the main focus is not PvP. Personally I'm hoping it's going to be more Mass Effect than Call of Duty. I can see plenty of ways that on-foot FPS can enhance missions (eg bounty-hunting, infiltrate/steal data, etc), but if it's just going to be Deathmatch and Capture the Flag tournaments I'll pass.

Im actually ok with FPS combat in Elite. Ive played FPS games for a long time and its a genre that im pretty good at.
So im expecting to finally shine at combat within the ED galaxy...... Chewing bubble gum and doing plenty of something else along with it.

Very little about elite has focused on pvp for 6 years now. Reckon you'll be OK.

I, from time to time, play FPS games. Enjoy them even. But.....I'm not sure this game needed FPS content added on.

The thing is, I'm here to fly spaceships - I suspect I'm not alone (?) - and this game is (for me) the leader of the pack in that category. I wouldn't be here otherwise, or invested so much time into this game, and its given me plenty of joy, wonder and the occasional what?!? moment back in return for that investment.

If I wanted to play a FPS, I have more than enough games to quench my killing-spree thirst. When I look back at the 2017 Expo, I can't remember thinking back then that "this game needs some FPS stuff in it!".

Maybe I'll be surprised and FDEV will blow me away with just how good FPS in Odyssey is, while making established FPS games like Gears, Doom, CoD etc look silly by comparison? Maybe I'll actually enjoy defending remote, Imperial outposts on some remote ice world against Federation aggression?

But, right now, Megaship Piracy has been broken for months. Core mining has been broken for months. That's a big hit against two professions (and one scenario) in the game. I'm hopeful these issues will be fixed before Odyssey is released (or soon after? please?) and that players looking for non-FPS content have something to enjoy.

I guess I was hoping for something more......unique from Odyssey? Spacewalks to investigate broken hulls of ships (which are already in the game), taking SRVs into cave systems to find loot and explore what's down there ("what do you mean we get earthquakes down here?!!?") ....I'm looking forward to the next Dev diary which will hopefully make me and this post look silly.
It was always in the game plan. Is there stuff I would have rather FD prioritised? Absolutely... But it is not my call to me and if done well I could absolutely have a lot of fun with 1st person on foot content in ED.
The important thing is what ever they add it is fully fleshed out and not half baked.

The ONLY content that has zero value to me.woukd be forced multiplayer stuff. (Outside of CQC). I just hope for every multiplayer role there is npc equivalents. I am still salty I don't get to wing up with npcs or even see SRVs in my game and I hope FD have put that right in ED:O

Lots focussed on multiplayer tho without ever giving a solo player alternate . Wings, crew, CQC, SRV shinanigans (ie more than 1)
Wings was essential imo. The rest not so much.

But to suggest solo content is somehow superceded by pvp (he said pvp not cooperative) content is a bit of a stretch. Pvp is supported. But that's about it.

Need? Perhaps not, but considering the optional factor of it, it can't hurt. No one gonna force ya to do it, or not do it.

@TheSisko I promise to read every post in this thread over brunch tomorrow, and chime in afterwards, in the interim I'm away to watch the F1, but I was wondering, as someone I respect, would you return the favour and read over my similarly themed thread and we can swap notes?
