Does Elite development ends in 2024?

Sure, there's hearsay then.

There's a bit of David Braben saying he'd not want to shut the game down, and that it'll go as long as it can.

In some video - though, Awfully, I'm not gonna bother finding it as I posted it elsewhere in the previous (twelve thousand?) of these threads.
I remember it too though. Was something along the lines of "we'd love to continue to support this game for a long time, tens years even if we are so lucky".

Or something like that. Clearly no literal plan but they did mention "ten years" at one point. :p

Yep. It all got conflated and made into gospel by the community from what I can tell. (Though I wasn't at the mentioned lavecon so it's possible they did specifically state it there I suppose)

On Dec 14 2024 we may finally get COL 70 Sector open and send fleet carriers full of starship troopers in to clean out the bugs from the Thargoid homeworld and blast them from the face of the universe.

Or maybe not yet. People will get upset, say ED is dead and migrate over to SC. . .again. 3-4 months later, SC will still be in alpha and they'll be back and we'll have this discussion again.

To me, a 10-year plan meant they have ideas (as someone else pointed out) that could create content for 10 years or so. Somewhere along the way, FD got into Planet Zoo, Planet Coaster, Jurassic World and, let's face it, we all saw ED fall by the wayside, "Seasons" stopped being seasonal, and we were left with planets/moons with no atmosphere for the LONGEST time, along with the occasional fungus living in a hard vacuum, Guardian sites with their computer systems left out in the open (really? you wouldn't put those inside a facility???) but never any way to get inside those guardian sites to explore.

I'm hoping Odyssey will give more opportunities to get inside some of these abandoned facilities, explore in different ways. We're finally getting atmospheric worlds. We have plants; we need something that eats the plants (because there's always something that does - nature finds a way to balance things). With their "practice" with animals in Planet Zoo, I'm hoping we eventually find creatures that crawl / walk, can be hunted, etc.

There are lots of what I call "missed opportunities" with ED over the last 4 years. If they intended for ED to die and shut down in 2024 I don't think they'd be fighting so hard to fix the frame rate issues. You don't push that much effort into something that upper management might say "It'll go dark in 2 years anyway, so what's the problem?" They're getting there and I'm noticing improvements in frame rates out in the black. I know they still have issues with inside facilities and stations but it's still improving.

It'll go dark once they start really losing money on it, as Rubbernuke noted. I agree. I just hope Braben's spirit stays with it for at least another 10 years or so. I'd still like to dive into gas giants to find space whales. If SC ever goes "live" then FD will have some real competition on their hands. This is something I actually welcome. Competition always pushes innovation.

Cheese and rice, I'm up to more than four paragraphs. Sorry. It's not dead yet. It's just feeling a little under the weather.

Will we have ship interiors by then? Really thought that after the Horizon update and planets to land that the rest of the promises would follow.
What we got since then has been...well underwhelming to say the least.

Remember the Odyssey leak talked about outpost building and killing thargoids and they nailed pretty much every thing else, so it either got canned or delayed for some other time. Bummer.

Yes, there was. It was said during Lavecon, there was a thread about it here but that got deleted or lost during forum restructuring - the link is now dead.

I like Odyssey I really do especially after patch 8, one thing I hope they fix is the alien abductions.

@FDEV please sort out these missing gaps in my characters memory for example:
1) I wanted a coffee the other day I got up out of my chair and I suddenly appeared outside my ship on the concourse of the station. All I wanted was a coffee.

This happens way to much, I went to "spend a penny" and it happened again. It seems to happen every time I get up out of my pilot chair. It's causing my pilot anxiety issues as he can't get up now without appearing outside his ship, when in space he doesnt dare get up for fear of appearing outside the ship and he gets lost in space ;)

I'll admit that last year when they talked about how Galnet would be receiving new content for 2 years, and the approximate end time of that just happens to closely coincide with the 10 year anniversary of Elite's kickstarter, I did briefly wonder if that wasn't just a coincidence. That thought was fueled a bit when David Braben said in an Odyssey interview late last year that they were now "8 years into this journey."

But the fact is that, while many players decry the use of a P2P network structure, it does guarantee that Elite's server upkeep will never be all that costly. Elite isn't the only egg in Fdev's basket like it was in 2014. They've done quite well for themselves over the past 5 years and have developed a fairly sizeable portfolio. Even if the game were to stop being profitable, a total shutdown of Elite's servers is extremely unlikely to happen anytime soon, even if they decided to cease content development.

Fdev will fulfill the promise to do an offline update or let the game die when the servers turn off without caring about the preservation of the video games.

And this was at a time, where FDev expected to sell a season pass full of content each year. He probably did not expect, that 6 years later only one "Season" would be completed and a second only in early access.

I really hope we do not need to revisit this again, but FDEV did not ever mention anything about a season pass each year.

As far as i'm aware, Seasons was a concept only for Horizons and they fulfilled that already by the end of 2018, then it was dropped, not to be picked up by Odyssey

While I feel like Fdev may have said at one point that they were “hoping” to get out one season per year, I think it was largely just an assumption on the playerbase’s part at the time. Horizons released exactly 1 year after the base game, and when Horizons pre-orders went live, they also briefly sold the Lifetime Expansion Pass again for a whopping $180 USD.

I remember players back then were talking about how, even at that price, the LEP would save you money in the long run, with talk of how much more “10 years of paid seasons” would cost in comparison. Combining the 10 year plan misquote with the paid season a year assumption to create the perfect misinformed purchase trap.

I bet if you went back in time and told those guys that there wouldn’t be another paid expansion for another 5 and a half years, they’d never believe you.

I feel so sorry for anyone who bought the LEP for that price assuming we’d get yearly paid expansions. I was very seriously considering it at the time under that same assumption of long-term savings, but I ultimately decided against it, and I’m so very glad I did. Elite still needs to produce 2 more paid expansions of the same price as Odssey and Horizons just for those guys to break even.
