Does It Constitute As Cheating If...

It's stealing and cheating, to alter game files (just because you know how) when you clearly know you were not given expressed permission to do so, in violation of the TOS you agreed to at purchase, which gives you any game asset you clearly know you should have paid to own.

If you had to ask here, and because you asked here, you clearly know what you purpose is wrong.

Before anyone mentions changing HUD colors via the "open .xml game files" as a cheat, it seems "Dr. Kaii" is a "volunteer moderator" on this forum and his application is supported and acknowledged by Frontier. (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threa...ofiler-switcher-detector.262552/#post-4054791)

This tool, it's use, it's acknowledgement and support by Frontier is quite different in many respects from what the OP is asking about.

You want to alter game files, I suggest you ask Frontier first and get permission before doing so.

o7....
It's easier to ask forgiveness than permission.

It would be better if you and others asked Frontier to create pink paint jobs. You would be able to buy and use them legitimately without breaking the TOS. You wouldn't have to change them each time there is a patch. Others would be able to buy and use them. Others would be able to see them. Frontier would make some money which could go towards development of Elite: Dangerous.

It's a win-win situation.

I must have missed a change then, back in the days it was told that these changes (activating skins via file manipulation) were invisible to other commanders. I've never checked this though...

They are invisible to other CMDRs.

You could still make everyone you see bright yellow.

But is it?
:p
Is altering a game file to change a non performance enhancing cosmetic item cheating? It's a ridiculous question.

(I have no intentions of doing this, if I struggle to see a CMDR, I'll put night vision on, it's much easier than going and finding what paintjob they use, quit the game, swap said paintjob with an easier to see one, and then go find them again, hoping I picked the right one!....)

One of the side effects of constantly having ideas, is stupid questions like this pop in to my brain. 😁

I dunno where anyone draws their personal line on this.

But I did notice that when the screen grabs of the cheats were posted here, there was one large group of people crying “YAY GRAPHICS SLIDERS - I WANT”

You're probably a lot of fun at parties, aren't you?

Having a very broad statement on policy about what constitutes cheating in Elite gives Frontier the ability to tackle infringements on a case by case basis. In theory (if I remember the wording correctly) even using EDDB could THEORETICALLY constitute a breach. We know it doesn't really equate to cheating in any meanigful sense and Frontier know it doesn't so nobody need panic about that but equally, if someone comes up with a bit of software which allows tampering with game files for cosmetic reasons and then someone else adds a "transparent paintjob" to that mod' then suddenly that mod' becomes something FD might concern themselves with where previously they might not?

Pretty much what Alec wrote. FD's TOS are not confined to "cheating" so FD could in theory come down on you for any change to game files if it wants.

Reading Paige's official post on cheating, it applies to any mod, hack, etc and seems to conflate all game changes with cheating. In reality there are 3 separate categories (a) exploiting game mechanics without hacks or mods, (b) exploiting game mechanics with hacks or mods, and (c) not exploiting game mechanics at all, just making cosmetic changes (e.g. tool to change HUD colours). Categories (b) and (c) often get lumped together and strictly speaking require FD approval. It has a form in the third party tools section of these forums.

You are basically frauding the online store, by cheating in game what they could have sold to you.
You not only cheated - you owe real money now too.
If you bought a paintjob from the store and just changed its colour to a colour or scheme not on offer in the store are you really defrauding the store since you already paid for a paintjob. If you made multiples then yes but a one on one replacement? hmmm this could get interesting.
