Drew Wagar's Thoughts

When it was announced that legs was coming I was totally against it. It is a space flight game after all and there is plenty to flesh out or fix in that area.

Now I’m lucky in that with EDO I don’t have any performance issues but I’m finding there is so much more to do. I love flying in to a Coriollis and leaving the ship walking around listening to the chatter and seeing a living world. Again, much more can be added and they are with the upcoming missions update.

Strolling around a settlement taking out the inhabitants and taking a load of stuff is more satisfying than in probably should be lol.

Yes I would love a new ship, a large Alliance ship to battle the Corvette and Cutter. A medium ship borne cargo freighter to reach outposts from my large ship but the I have my FC and whichever ship to transport my goods to and from.

I’ve not even started exploring new Odyssey worlds in detail yet despite having been to Sag A and back before Horizons.

Lots to do and not enough RL time to do it!!!

Yes I do want my full VR back, Yes I want new ships and even more non-combat on foot missions that mean I don’t have to kill everyone.

Yes I probably could write a wish list as long as the forums longest threads, but I’m loving Odyssey. It is what I imagined back in 1984 when my first vector graphic Cobra took flight.

I still trust FDev to build on what is here now and the game to grow.

I’ve met Drew at Lavecon and have a lot of time for him but this time I totally disagree with him. we respect each other’s opinion. I wish him the best for all his future projects.

it is just that other parts nearer to the core experience are still missing, need to be added or fleshed out, before space legs should have been tackled.

I think that probably makes an assumption about the game architecture. In fact Odyssey and it's bases have just shown how complex it is to link a brand new mode into the BGS, markets, combat zones and faction states not to mention marrying the physicality of it on to updated planet surfaces. Imagine if you also had to link it into a fleshed out blackmarkets, navies and powerplay too, all at the same time. Complex atmospheres and weather too? In reality it probably makes quite a lot of sense - in development terms - to put in a basic system and nail down the archecture for it before you add other features that might (or might not) dip into it .. in future Horizons/Odyssey hybrid missions say.

Politically it's a harder sell of course. But again I think equating how a feature looks on it's first draft to it's ultimate ambition is another false assumption. And a bear trap .. that Drew just fell into (imho).

Exactly! Of couse space legs are in the spirit of Elite Dangerous because how you explore the Stellar Forge is entirely up to you and if it's about the transport why didn't Drew quit when the SRV was introduced? Or SLF's? Legs is only another mode of locomotrion just the same as ships are.

Because the entire focus of 'space legs' from Odyssey's perspective is to shoot people in the face. It's not the mode of transport - it's the direction of the game as a whole. An FPS is completely against the spirit of Elite: Dangerous. If there was any meaningful content to be had from 'legs' that didn't involve FPS, you would have a valid point here... because you could just say "play that part".

For those who love the real game, there isn't much to look forward to, and since many things are broken & have been for quite a long time now, no real reason to stick around or even hope that the direction of the game will change any. It's been what... 5 months now? And they're still scrambling to finish Odyssey. So as well as the knowledge, the talent isn't there either. People playing Horizons right now are dreading the day the code is merged.

My guess is his nose got out of joint because FD understandably want to cater to all - and younger - demographics, not just those in the older camp (of which I'm one) and likely have put in game tools development above Drew's immediate lore wishlist.

A case in point would be Jaques. Yes he was originally a barman in lore but he also runs his own station now, his voice is clearly audible in the docking bay. Evolving this promotion, as character development, into lore once Odyssey dropped didn't seem to factor in Drew's thinking though. The fact Frontier hadn''t designed a bespoke bar character avatar for him is not at all surprising though, or even a slight against Drew but it was one of his talking points .. about how his vision of ED is apparently derailed. Which it aint . handcrafting that kind of detail would be phase 2 when Odyssey is undeniably still in phase 1, even if we did stand still.

Maybe so in his case, but I think it's more a symptom of a much wider problem. The straw that broke the camel's back, as it were.

It will be interesting first few times but at the end it is just 3d generic menu for legs content that is highly repetitive with almost no variety.

Only the newly announced SRV is not legs content and this will be the trend.
So where is the problem? Should the game be stuck forever in the simple 'spaceship' game it has been for years, or evolve into a game where the player is not welded into a seat of some vehicle or another.

I get you did the grind to get stuff in Odyssey (your mercenary rank suggests so) and got bored, but the game was already shedding bored players way before Odyssey was released. At least now there is much more to do, with the liklihood of further development to add to the 'foot' experience - splendid!

Apart from the ONE HUNDRED AND SOMETHING odd varieties of flora to scan obviously.

And the sneaking about bases, infiltrating security .. and theft. (watch Dr Hope Math on youtube)

And base restoration .. and fire fighting.

Oh and the industrial espoinage .. and sabotage.

Not to mention ship trading .. with tiny population bases.

Apart from that sure, there's almost nothing to do but shoot 🤪

I had to switch from EDO to EDH last night because I wanted to go mining, and in EDO all raw mats spawn inside the asteroid.

I did mined about 600-700 tons of Tritium for my new carrier (yea, i'm that cheap) - i have not encounter this bug

Since you can't actually unzip yourself, get out of your cockpit seat, walk to an exit ramp and leave your ship - 'legs' is just another mode of transport like an SRV.

There's no immersion there. And that is a big thing when it comes to believing you are actually a pilot of a ship, and just left your ship to go walking.

It could have been great. It unfortunately isn't. So, many people (like Drew) are just moving on. 🤷‍♀️

In a galaxy of 400 billion systems... nice.

What happens if you are caught? Can you talk your way out of it?

Pretty sure all except the trading will require shooting, yes?

It's a problem since either 7.0 or 7.01. I wondered why my limpets all committed suicide by ramming the asteroid, until I noticed by selecting any (and this applies to all mats that spawned as part of mining) raw mats they were out of my reach i.e. inside the boundaries of the rock. The only workaround in EDO is to put all raw mats on your ignore list... but since I need them for engineering I switched to EDH because there it works just fine (famous last words). I could reproduce it each time I went mining, in different locations, and have seen others here mention it also.

Edit - this was in metallic rings only, I wonder if it's not a problem in icy ones. Haven't mined in those in ages.
