If anyone's just ambling like me, then here's some sights to see while getting to the waypoint:

Shapley 1 (Best viewed from Fine Ring Sector JH-V C2-4)
The View - GalMap Ref: HR 6164
Cycladia - GalMap Ref: Blu Thua GI-B b55-2
Labirinto - GalMap Ref: Traikaae CH-Y c10 Planet: 1 A
Thor's Eye - GalMap Ref: Thor's Eye
Lagoon Nebula - GalMap Ref: Herschel 36
Cinnabar Moth Nebula - GalMap Ref: Traikaae KT-P d6-10
The PW2010 Supercluster - GalMap Ref: PW2010 210

Very lucky that I checked the route after three brown dwarfs. There was a whole load of them after that so I re routed with only the fuel stars. Didn't cost me any more jumps though.

I'm using the same route though also doing a lot of stops for exploring along the way lol

There were a few hard landings on Shapely last night, so here's a reminder before we hit the really high-G worlds:
https://sites.google.com/a/hutchins1.net/majklutz/guide-to-high-gravity-landings

tl;dr my take-home points for simple landings:
- higher-Gs are when thrusters stop operating normally
- thrusters with FAon "hover" you automatically to maintain relative height
- don't use Down thrusters (you essentially say: stop hovering and thrust me down, and then gravity stacks on top, plummeting you)
- don't roll (ditto disabling hover)
- pitch down slightly, and use low forwards thrust (hover still working, but slowly descend)
- use yaw + forward/back/left/right to find landing spot

Takeoffs have the similar oddities with thrusters, but simplest rules:
- don't boost (actually worse in very high Gs to escape orbit)
- thrust up (only) and keep holding it, until a few kms up

There's more advanced stuff you can do, but the above I think are the easiest ones to remember.

Anyone else get caught up in the carnage last night? I've been playing Elite since it came out on the PS4, not to a great depth admittedly, but all that time I've played in Open without worry or incident. In my head, playing in Open is the real world, with real world dangers. Last night however, I was forced to play in PG mode for the first time. Every time I tried to get near Brooks Point, I was picked off by someone. Three times I found myself re-buying my poor wee Diamondback and flying it back towards the Distant Worlds Beacon. I gather there were a lot of people there having a whale of a time attacking unarmed, unarmoured explorers, and again, to me that kind of adds a wee bit of spice to the game, but what I don't understand is what were they getting out of it? Do the kills count towards something? Were they getting bounties?

Once I was safely in Allcrow's PG group though, I managed to jump away with a crazy number of other ships, my radar was crammed! It was kind of intimidating though with all those whopping big ships suddenly appearing out of frameshift right in front of my window. Kinda understand now how the poor folk must have felt every time Galactica reappeared in the middle of their fleet. Wayhey she's back, and I need new trousers please!

I managed one jump before the servers all went mental and I was spat out. Took me about 30 minutes to get back in and by that time I think folk were already dispersing, so I headed up to Shapely 1, admired the view for a wee bit then went on to The View where I parked up for the night. What a view it was by the way, spectacular and my favourite thing about this game. I can indulge my other hobby of amateur astronomy without having to drag my telescope out into the back garden on a cold Scottish night!

One last thing, I'm part of a squadron now and even have three of four PS4 'friends' now. Can I view / find them on the galaxy map? Oh, and I kept seeing folk asking to 'Wing Up' on the in-game chat thingy. What's that all about?

Cheers folks,

Looking forwards to seeing lots of new exciting things in front of me!

Yes, you will see the location of your squadron members. "Wing up" means forming a wing. Which essentially is a way to ensure you will instance with the other wing members. They will appear as blue on your radar, and you'll have a private comms channel to your wing.

Pretty sure Squadron members do not show up on the galaxy map, otherwise i should have 300+ DW02 icons.

Wing members do appear on the galaxy map, as do friends. You can also check the location of these two types by going up to the comms panel, 3rd tab, and the system will be shown if you're in the same mode.
Another advantage of being in a wing is you can set your "Wing Beacon" to be on (right pane;, Ship tab), and then other players can drop from super cruise to normal space on your location.

One last multiplayer option is "Multicrew". This is different to wings, which are up to 4 other players each in their own ship, as Multicrew has multiple players in a single ship. They can then fly your SLF, use turreted weapons (and mining lasers) and so on.

As for "PvP" against unarmed explorers, no they get no reward of value, only "salt" and trying to gain a reaction, and exposure of their deeds if people complain about it.
Best thing is to shrug and ignore them.

So all those folk looking for a wing to join last night, how do they do it? If I see someone tonight, how would I link up with them? Would I need to create a wing and is it on the left panel where the squadron stuff is?

Sorry for the questions but I'm very much a noob when it comes to online gaming.

If they are in your squadron, you can go to right panel, squadrons, find player, add to squadron (small icon in bottom right of their profile).
If in local, i.e.: you can see their ship, target them, up to comms panel, 3rd tab, click on their name, "invite to wing".
The more normal way (not in squadron, not in instance) is to add them as a friend vis PSN, wait for them to show in comms panel under friends, then click their name, and invite to wing.

FDev also have a bunch of tutorials on this stuff, e.g.:

Finally the day came we all been waiting for, after long preparations it was finally time to spin up that FSD and leave the bubble behind. (or so we thought) :)
The launch event may have been a bit chaotic, (so many NPC ships, the sky filled with orcas and dolphins). We had lag and lots of it. A bit confusing time on where to jump to first and were to line up for the launch at the beacon (at least in my instance).

After my first jump i was booted from the game and never managed to get back into the servers again yesterday.

But i must say in the mist of the chaos it was fun. Seeing so many showing up for the event ( not counting the griefers in open) made me really happy!
It wasnt unexpected that so many ships would bring the milkyway to a halt and yesterday at Frontiers office must have been "fun".. I really didnt get that much time in my Krait Phantom (Weekend, 0LD-DW)

But what I really wanted to say was that I must salute Allcrowsareblack for taking her time yesterday to join in to our party's for a quick chat with us all.
That kind of careing is what will make this expedition a sucsess! And i do look forward to the months ahead and all the jumps that lies ahead and to seeing you out there in PG.

Here’s some landing attempts at 3.3G I just witnessed:

P.S.: Stormy, I hope you’re OK!

Yeah sorry I wasn't clear, I meant he can see them from the squadron interface, not the galmap!

It should also be said that at the moment the wing system seems to be broken. Not yesterday nor today I managed to wing up with friends.
