ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

First Impressions.

From the moment I donned the Rift the wow factor was just incredible. There's not a lot I can add to that as it truly is one of the most unique gaming experiences I had in ages and I'm more than impressed.

However, I've found that I can only spend about 30 to 40 mins in there before I start to feel a little ill. Is this usual? Does it go away such as sea sickness does the longer you stay a float.

I'm guessing it will improve when my new graphics card arrives as the space judders quite a lot when tracking head movement. I hope it does as I'm going to be gutted if I'm one of these people that sufferers adverse effects.

I've tried turning the graphics to low, killing aero and fixing the sync on the Nvidia control panel. I currently have a GTX570 and a GTX780 on the way.

EDIT: How do I display the FPS. Shift-V doesn't seem to work.

Does aero not get paused through the Oculus Configuration Utility? If not, which process is aero? I can't seem to see it listed in task manager :S

Also how do you fix the sync on NVIDIA cards?

Sorry, that shout read 'disabling aero' via the Bilago tool.

EDIT: I read somewhere that it was optimal to fix the vertical sync on the Nvidia control panel. I found it under '3D Settings' 'Program Settings'

I'm at the same stage as you. I got my DK2 a few days back and got Elite running on it thanks to Psykokow. But my GFX card is not the best and the image was jittery.

I've decided to play Half Life 2 first. It's a very solid 75 FPS on my system. I never had any queasiness with FPSs before but I certainly felt some adverse effects after playing for an hour just now. Although that might have had something to do with my having to push a charred body out of the way to get to a health kit. :)

I'm going to wait for a price drop for graphics cards and continue with Elite in 2D for the moment.

Im hoping that the judder some are experiencing due to their system spec not being enough to run the game at a rock solid 75fps will be somewhat eased by the support of timewarp. As I understand it the current version of ED doesnt play well with the OR software and as a result the timewarp effect is not working.

That just what I think is happening so if thats correct those with lower framerates will get a "better" experience soon. I dont think it will solve extreme low framerate problems though.

Just caved today and ordered a dk2, was holding out for cv1 but the combination of the growing realisation of a probable year wait for cv1 and the necessity of a gaming pc upgrade to be able to run it when my current pc is probably capable of running dk2 broke my resolve. Oh well. Now just need to find some way of breaking the news to my wife

My one arrived at home on the 15th.
Unfortunately I am not there I am in France.
This is bothersome to me.....
Suppose I can wait another few days.

I've read that motion sickness is much less of an issue due to tracking lag being less than 20ms and this low persistence mode. Dunno if ED supports that.Yet!
:)

I do think a webcam overlay operated by a mapable button would be useful.
Voiceattack will be very useful too.

Can confirm that the experience with the DK2 is awe-inspiring! There is, however, one thing that really detracts from it: Head bob is not disabled with the Oculus Rift. Unfortunately the little head motions when rotating your ship, or even worse, during system jumps, really start to make you sick after a while (or at least me, but I have a fairly sensitive stomach). Has there been any word as to when they might address this?

Cheers,

Psilox

Here's a simple answer: buy two DK2s, one for yourself and one for your wife. Slip the headset on her while she is sleeping and let her live an alternative virtual reality where you DIDN'T buy Oculus Rifts. Remove the headset when she's on her deathbed. If you go first she might find out and be furious at you, but by then it would be too late :)

My DK2 will be here tomorrow in time for the weekend. I will look at some VR Potatoes and then ED I think. Or maybe the other way around, see how the mood strikes me.

There's not been a "when" but at least they've said they will address it with a slider/off switch for Rift users.

Someone developed a tool that maybe addresses this - didn't read the entire thread to see if it works - but it was removed and thread closed as, apparently, you have to ask FD's permission to use an exe on your PC that "talks" to ED.

I can conform that nauseau isnt a problem with a constant 75fps. No jitter is no nausea. I can spend several hours in the rift no problem. I have a r9 290.
I hope they give the option to due all the menus in green because the dk2 has the highest green pixel density.

Depends on the person.
Borrowing a DK1 I didn't play it much as it made me feel "Odd".

DK2 still made me feel "Odd" the first few days of playing around with different things even when everything is perfect and running at 75fps.
I've got my "VR legs" though now and can play for hours without ill effects (well depends of the game, Half Life 2 can still make me feel a little "Odd").

20% of people never get simulator sickness (maybe you're one of them, my little brother had no issues at all).
60% of people do get it but are able to get over it with exposure
20% get sim sickness and will always get sim sickness no matter what

%'s are roughly and come from Michael Abrash.

I got the "preparing to ship" email that indicates "processing" on Wednesday (20th) and it just arrived now (2 days later - UK orders are dispatched from Tamworth it seems).

This was for a pre-order placed on 1st May.

Now I have to find the time to go back and properly re-read 60+ pages of this thread (with shaking hands!!) about what needs doing to get it working properly...

Looks like people in the UK up to the 29th April are getting their shipped, in the US up to May 15th.

I'm a UK 13th May order, so this means

Cool dude, hit me up to jump on TS when you get it and I'll give you some tips with setup. Learned a few things over the last week and a bit that I've had mine that reduces judder etc..

p.s. keep checking your order.
Mine went to processing and I didn't hear anything. Took around 36 hours to go from processing to shipped.

Really can't wait to see what the experience using the DK2 is like. I really want to be able to try one before jumping in. I have a lazy left eye, where the brain ignores a lot of the image resulting in good vision only through my right eye. Though I can see 3D to what I consider an ok extent, does anyone own one that has a lazy eye, what has your experience been?

I've been considering pre-ordering a DK2, though have been hoping to try one out at some point, though haven't located any events I can go to that have oculus confirmed to try.

If anyone lives in the Cardiff area and knows of any events I would appreciate the tip :)

I have a lazy left eye too. It's absolutely fine, the 3D you see in the Rift is exactly like the 3D you see in the real world - no issue whatsoever.
