ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Its got to be possible to make a client layer between the PC and Note 4 to stream occulus games played on the PC. They talk about 20ms and is happy with that on the VR-thingy, and my home network have way less latency then that.

I guess I will be one of those skipping the DK2, as I had my aim on the Note 4 the last year or so anyway.

Question is, will Samsung deliver? They have announced hardware gadgets before that never shown up. I'm hopefull tough as it is a joint effort and that should put some pressure on Samsung to actually deliver.

Next on that road would be to get the kernel changes Samsung/Occulus have made to android in to Google mainstream android build, and from there hopefully the other android manufacturers can make similar headsets. Who knows, maybe its already coming in the next google keynote...

The other part of this market, the 20% apple (but a lot higher high end market), might be a lot harder for Occulus to get their foot in that door. From Carmacks speach it sounds like they need low level kernel access, and my guess is there is a lot of red tape to get trough before going into IOS inner kernel layers.

I tried this but already am stuck at "-Launch E:D, go to graphics options, and set it to the Rift mode with 75Hz."
In E:D i don't have the option to set it to the rift. Only display 1 or 2.
Ok so maybe that's what you mean, and thus i tried that and continued.
But then at this step "-Look in left eyepiece, click on "Play" button on E:D launcher" I see E:D in the rift, but it's not Rift compliant. it's 1 screen instead of 2.

Any idea?

BTW I wasn't aware of this topic but I received my DK2 yesterday and ordered it May 16th from Netherlands.

I tried this yesterday and while I got the shutting down of the main monitor to work, jumping through all those hoops is a bind.

I found that setting the res on the main monitor to the first one that supports 75Hz to be just as effective. My FPS jump dramitically to the point where I could even up some of the detail. Although that's a subjective view as I currently have no way to see actual FPS. For some reason CTRL-F doesn't work for me in the Rift or am I doing something wrong?

As long as that helps fund the development of "true VR" on the PC, then great. Mercedes do other cars besides their F1 flagship.

At the end of the day, this is just Google Cardboard customised for a specific (unreleased) phone type and model. I have a Durovis Dive which I have played with on my Samsung S3, and it's fun, but it's not a patch on what I've seen of the Oculus PC version so far.

Agreed. The beginning of this article says similar re Google Cardboard / Durovis Drive http://gizmodo.com/samsungs-answer-to-the-oculus-rift-is-a-phone-powered-v-1629923041

I'm on this forum because I want to play Elite Dangerous / PC games in VR and the GearVR can't do that. The DK2 does and exists now.

This is kinda thinking out loud so please be gentle with me ;) I believe Oculus have confirmed the next release will be CV1 ...... otherwise in this partnership might they have attached a cable / IR diodes / external camera to the GearVR and rebrand it the DK3? This would give a better resolution, video passthrough, the ability to upgrade the screen etc.

Oculus have already confirmed the CV1 will have better resolution. So at this late stage could they just add to the existing Rift - video passthrough, a case that snaps open giving an easy screen upgrade path, easy focus dial etc?

I'll get my coat :D

I received mine...

20/08/2014 @ 10:00 PTD - Wolfox (time zone 1+)

(All this is done after updating, configurating, testing the Oculus Rift DK2 with the configuration tool ;) )

To make it work from that day till now.
[System with third party Nvidia GTX 770 2gb on Win7]
- Connect everything and PC on:D
- Activate multiscreen on Nvidia control panel
- Turned Rift orientation on Nvidia control panel
- Set Rift screen at 75hz on Nvidia control panel
- [Optional but done]Created a Elite Dangerous profile on Nvidia control panel
- Extended Desktop on Windows
- Extended option on Oculus rift configuration tool in Display Mode.
- Download Oculus Service Manager and press STOP SERVICE
- Start Elite dangerous
- go to Options\Graphic and set resolution and 3D experimental- APPLY
- If nothing happens EXIT and restart the Game.
- If the stereoscopic view is on your main screen; Go to Options\Graphic (you should be having some voices in red)and set Screen as SECONDARY

[Note] On your desktop nothing will happen all the magic is in the RIFT :D.

Once everything is ok the only thing to do when you want to start ED from now on is:
- Start Oculus Service Manager and press STOP SERVICE(is possible to see if the service is stopped on the top left of the window)
- Start Elite Dangerous:)

Enjoy:)

To check FPS:
In Game or a bit everywhere,
- Press CTRL-F
- Take off the Rift from your head (I'm sorry for this)
- Make sure to be in a clean no dust environment
- Unscrew the left lens
- FPS is on the top left
- If you don't see nothing, press CTRL-F again

Enjoy-----------------------if you are above 40fps:D:D:D

Oculus have already confirmed the CV1 will have better resolution.

In fact the CV1 screen is almost certainly the Note 4 screen which was also revealed at the same show. What I haven't seen is confirmation on whether the Note 4's screen is a pentile arrangement like before. I suspect it is, but I'll be very happy to be proved wrong.

The only link I've seen is German which Google translated to :

"Samsung announced at the IFA in Berlin its new smartphone Galaxy Note 4. It has a large 5.7 inch Super Amoled-Pentile screen, a resolution of 2560x1440 pixels and a density of 515 pixels per inch"

However that's just single source http://www.netzwoche.ch/de-CH/News/...y-Note-4-Note-Edge-und-eine-VR-Brille-an.aspx

Samsung and Oculus partner to create Gear VR :

Hands on video http://www.engadget.com/2014/09/03/samsung-virtual-reality/

I guess the relatively weak gaming hardware, relatively weak apps, combined with the lack of 6DOF Oculus see this as a different market sector to the Rift?

Better resolution - hopefully the advances on one will benefit the other.

Well yes I think so. It is still possible to create beautiful games for it
Although I don't expect they can reach the levels we're looking for, not in this fashion using the phones gpu anyway. BUT Still if that gpu can be bypassed then it is just a simple work around as simple as track ir for example...is what I think.
I wonder what would be enough to transmit 90 fps? 2"wifi transmitters is has is that enough?...

Edit: what I really want is to be able to build in that screen into the Dk2 :)
Edit: I already found out its virtually impossible unless oculus releases a Dk2 upgrade kit.

Yeah, makes sense. I don't recall Sammy ever doing an AMOLED screen which wasn't pentile.

Let's hope Facebook's billions can "persuade" them.

What's wrong about pentile screen ? I just learned about this...

They have less effective resolution in some colours. Each pixel is not made up of a red, green & blue subpixel. For Sammy screens, there is always a green pixel, but other subpixels are shared in an arrangement like: RGBG (iirc)

Or run something like Afterburner. I leave the Afterburner screen up on my monitor when I start ED, so I can just lift the Rift up and peak at the monitor to see my FPS at any time. Also it keeps a log so I can see performance over time and tracks other useful things like temperature and GPU utilization.

Well maybe (probably) the use of a Galaxy Note 3 screen in DK2 is just a placeholder. Especially since they've been bought by Facebook, Oculus will probably have a custom screen for their final version, that will fit the specific requirements of the device. I don't believe they will release a half-*ssed product to the general public.

The only issue is when we want to start peering at them through lenses from 3" away :)

This!

You're right. I didn't mind pentile at all on phones. But put it an inch from your face and use lenses to "zoom" even more and then it's a problem. Compare a RiftUp to a DK2, purely from a sharpness point of view - that's the pentile effect.

Ordered my DK2 today, was debating waiting for one with a higher resolution but hearing the views from the peeps on this thread finally pushed me over the edge.
So it's all your fault people, well that's my excuse if i get hassle for spending the money so sorry about that :).
And now its a wait for the October stock to get going, wouldn't be so bad but i am already waiting for a Robox 3d printer that should be this month i hope.

Use Playclaw 5 to view in rift
