ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Anyone choosing a 980 over a 970 has more money than sense, imo! ;)

Why? I ordered 980s but my bank screwed the payment up with its fraud prevention and by the time I realised they were all sold out.

A pair of 980s would give you around 20-30fps more than a pair of 970s, which is a similar jump from a pair of 670s.

I went from playing on low settings with SLI 670s to high settings with SLI 970s in Rift E: D

I'm quite happy with that.

But... is SLI supported in the game now? Or are you using certain profiles or workarounds? I tried xfire with two R9 290x's but the only thing I got was the flickering textures.

It gives a boost over a single card. It's probably not scaling very well but it's doing something.

Just in terms of bang for buck. If you think it's worth paying an additional £~400 for twenty extra frames per second then that's your prerogative, but to me it seems madness.

That's twenty quid per frame!

I'm really happy about the 970 announcement, since I bought a small form factor, living room pc that can't fit bigger/more power hungry cards. I have a 660 right now, and before the 970, the best card that would fit was the 760. There's an exga version of the 970 that is only 9.5", and I've seen people with the same PC as me playing with it. It looks like I could be back in the OR ring without having to change my entire PC!

it is a bit daft to make sweeping assumptions like that though isnt it?

it could be those extra fps could be the difference between playable and not playable however.

in VR, framerate is everything, so I dont think it is possible to make blanket judgement calls.

its like saying to a petrol head its madness to buy a performance car over a 1l micra, because the car only offers a few extra mph.

for some people the experience is part of it rather than just being "usable".

otherwise we would all be playing on xbox 360's still?

For those wondering about SLI this is at least one person's opinion on the geforce forums:

"I don't know about VR SLi but looks like they did do some VR optimization with 9 series, I switched form my 2x Titans to 2x 980 cause of promise for support for VR

In Elite Dangerous the difference is night and day, that i was blown away i did not touch any settings just swapped the cards and drivers obviously and Elite feels buttery smooth while docked in stations compared to stuttering with Titan All in all impressive switch for VR for me "

ELite Dangerous is a game of trading and where your basically are trying to get the most profit of your travels, you cannot blame Elite players for thinking on the same way on reality :D a 980´s SLI is not cost effective...
that is very true, a 970´s SLI will give you almost the same but for 450$ less...

Stop waffling about graphics cards and get back to the important stuff like turning names yellow and green, I am currently a month away on current dates.

980's

Can someone post fps for this 970 sli setup in rift mode please. I'm ordering my new Pc and was going to order a 980 and add another in a few months but if these 970's your raving about in sli are better than a 980 then I may reevaluate my decision. but I don't want to get a powerful machine and then get let down by graphics.

Last night I decided to give my laptop a test run with the ED DK2 combo. Basically because I'm tired of restarting the game every 5-20 minutes on my main PC because of position drift (which happens when you play with all VR drivers uninstalled to overcome the no SSE4.1 problem).

It was due to the fact that my laptop has an Nvidia card and I hoped that the new driver might make the experience somewhat bearable. Well, it didn't (it's just a GTX 660M, so really not enough, even on low). But I spotted one HUGE difference between the "driver on" and "driver off" setup.

On the laptop ("driver on", position tracking working) the entire game looked like from an old Wing Commander game. The colouring all overly bright. It felt "cartoony" to me.
On the PC ("no driver", only directional tracking) all looks toned down a lot. Which imho creates a much better mood. More like, I don't know. The reimagined Battlestar Galactica series or such.

So - once Beta 2 lands and we (hopefully) finally get full support for the current Runtime, including position tracking for the aging AMDs. Will my universe be tainted by overly shiny colours, or will there be a way to tone it down to the "slightly dirty" levels of original Star Wars? ;)

Just for those thinking on 970 and 980: AMD already has in the 290 series and 285 VR CrossFireX and optimizations. They're just not enabled in the drivers. Also, they are getting ready to launch the 300 series, so the 290 prices will drop soon enough and the drivers will be updated to activate CrossFiereX VR.

If you have a 290+ series or a 285, don't rush to sell your card to get an Nvidia one. Wait a bit and you'll be able to CrossFireX it for a lower price.

Although, from personal experience, I can say that with a little fumbling on RaedonPro you can get lower than 10ms latency variations, which is basically as good as VR optimized CrossFireX (although the optimization will be one card per eye). You just get the artifacts on ED. That'll be fixed soon enough.

Yes everything was going great until two weeks ago the list below ground to a halt - very disappointing. Tuesday / Wednesday evenings GMT is when we've traditionally received the 'next batch' emails. I'm hoping the pace will return to normal

At the very least wait till Thursday when AMD may well announce new cards that may be VR buffed their red pill/blue pill advert might indicate.

AMD VR Support

When Nvidia made its low-latency VR announcement, I immediately thought that the green team was going to have a de facto advantage over the red team. Fortunately for AMD users, this isn't the case.

According to Tom Forsyth, Oculus VR's Software Architect, this is a new enhancement for Nvidia GPUs that is already available in AMD graphics cards. In fact, some of these optimizations can be found in current Xbox One and Sony PlayStation 4 platforms as part of their respective SDK. Why? Because they are based on AMD GPUs.

In my opinion, the Nvidia reveal is a good news story for everyone. It's less about saying one GPU brand is better than another for VR; instead, this is about introducing a new choice and widening the landscape for GPU consumers interested in VR.

However, Forsyth stressed that while AMD's GPU hardware has the goods, things still have to happen on the software side to complete the optimization. In Forsyth's opinion, it's best for consumers to focus on benchmarks and measurable performance before making final choices on GPU favorites; each brand has its strengths and weaknesses."

Indeed, but do yourself a favour and quite your sources :)
