ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Hi. What do you guys think: Can i run Beta2 with DK2 with this mid-range rig:

GPU: single AMD R9 280X
CPU: core i5 haswell 3,4
RAM: 8gb

atm i have 60fps with high settings, but with triple-monitor setup it goes down to playable 20-30fps, inside stations. I have no problem to reduce the graphics settings to the minimum (can't see a big diffrence anyway)

I'm running a similar system, slightly better card, slightly slower CPU, and the DK2 runs smoothly at high settings (AA off), but can slow down to 30-40fps around the most demanding stations and rings. With the improvements expected in Beta 2 I think you'll be fine, although you may need to drop the detail to keep frame rates up in stations like Wyrd, or just not turn your head too quickly while landing.

I tried the Oculus Rift DK2 at the EGX on Sunday and, although it was quite nice to be able to look up at the escaping Cobra, struggling to read any of the text would make me hold off on getting one until the screen resolution gets a lot better.

It was splendid to meet Kerrash and some of the other ambassadors though.

Wait until Beta 2 is out, than we can say you more.

I know BETA 2 willl have updated support for the DK2, but do you know if it will have better performance? I could not find any changelogs that could tell me that.. Because I too, with a powerful rig, is experiencing stuttering in loaded areeas with my DK2

Ooosh...

reading this thread is scaring me :(

Seems to be a lot of people having hiccups and issues with DK2, i have ordered mine about 2 weeks ago, so it will be a few more weeks until ''that happy moment'' arrives.
I hope these creases get ironed out by then as ED is going to be the main game of use for the DK2 for myself.
I'm glad to see other people have it working just fine, hope I'm one of the lucky few who does not bump into lots of issues.

Thanks in advance to all the people who have posted help and tips about the DK2 in this thread. I'm sure some of them will come in handy. :)

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Direct Mode will make a massive difference, and we hope there has also been some optimisations behind the scenes as well to make stations appear smoother. Will know more tomorrow when beta 2 is released.

Currently, it's a bit of a faff & also a bit hit'n'miss to get it working with DK2 and head tracking. But with luck, the tips in here will be consigned to the historical interest category in a few days... and it will just work.

Awesome Stuff!

Like i say, oculus aint exactly rushing to send me out my DK2 anyways.. i have that painful 6-8 weeks waiting period

So with a bit of luck all these issues will be smoothed out by the time it arrives.

A colleague got back from playing ed beta 2 in the rift at egx.

It was the 1st time he had played elite in vr. Worryingly despite being impressed with it, 1 comment was he was disappointed with the heavy stuttering in the game.

Hopefully just a random quirk or he has a low tolerance for stutter......

Could just have been random. Did he say where in the game he experienced it, in a station maybe?

I played in one of the new asteroid fields and had a very smooth experience. However, there was some minor stutter when I flew up high above the asteroid field...

Actually yesterday I fired up the Elite, got in the cocpit of Laakon 6 and walked a bit around it in my DK2. Wow! i don't know why I didn't try before - awsome experience, I recommend anyone with big ship and DK2 to try it :) This actually changed my opinion about this game and OR a lot, I quite dislike low detail and reading problems, but the fact you can take a short walk around your chair.... this is something spectacular. Yes you are limited by your cable (be careful there) and there is a headless body in that chair, but it is totally worth it :)

Try it out, you will not regret it, and remember, baby steps, it is quite tricky in virtual world :)

Just tried it out with Lakon 9, you can walk quite far back towards the back of the ship and it is incredible, you can totally feel you are on the ship. Cannot describe it properly unfortunately :)

(tomorrow I will move the desktop so I can move one more meter back, maybe I can reach the stairs ;) )

highly likely the rift wasn't properly calibrated to your eyesight
although the text often isnt optimal, "struggling to read" makes me think it wasn't.
Then again waiting for a cv is worth it,i can't deny that.

By the time your Rift arrives, we'll be looking towards either beta 3 or Gamma 1, which will bring even more improvements. But it should still be better than currently.

I have no doubt that Frontier are on the case with this - both Michael and David are big fans of the Rift. :)

Is activating the 3D-"Ocolus Rift" mode with 1080p a valid benchmark for the performance of the DK2 or do i miss something? Have arround 60-75 fps inside stations, can't belive it :D

I suppose its valid but that is also not enough fps to make it fluid in oculus. you need at least 75 constantly else you get laggy effects while looking around. But most have it a bit in stations I suppose its better outside.

Sadly, it's not a fair reflection. Only way to tell is by plugging a Rift in and activating it then. ;)
