ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Okay, that's good advice.

I'm sure they will optimize too. On another note, I just got the DK2 working with Alien: Isolation. DUDE DON"T DO IT! IT"S TOO DAMN SCARY!

In terms of performance and visual quality, it really made me hopeful for what can be done in ED when they get more time working on the rift specific stuff and performance. It ran like silk.

I got a GTX 770, but I'm getting judder on the entrance to stations. It slows to about 50 FPS when I go through the slot. That's with everything on low, Blur off, but Oculus quality on high.

is there any hope for me, or shall I just grab that 970? :S

So, I've got a GTX 780 and I'm wondering if future versions of the game will have me running the rift smoother that it is, or if I simply need to update my card. I mean a 780 is great great great for everything EXCEPT ED in the Rift.

Update? or wait for tuning?

upgrade from a 780? its your money of course but i wouldn't!.

the gtx980 is faster than a 780 but its not *that* much faster. you could always overclock the card a bit if you haven't already, but.........................

ED is beta... who knows what tweaks will happen going forward.

eeermmm yyerr .. I fiddled in here to, not sure what I,m doing.

1. in E D I set the rift quality slider to far right, that helped a lot.
2 cut the bloom.
3 played with the Anti A settings, again not sure which setting is best.BUT completely OFF is NOT good.( like playing with 486 graphics.)
4 turned off blur
??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
In the rift advanced setting. I tried the slider 'thingy' fully left and right, Did not 'seem' to do anything?

I used this YOU TUBE VIDEO to set up .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGPC8uFOpcs

I can play, nice and smoothy, if I squint ....still everything is blurry ????

Try this
Go into the Oculus config utility.

Ensure you have the correct cups selected and they match which ones you have in. If you don't wear glasses it should be the B cups (the larger ones).
If you do wear glasses then you use the A cups (smaller ones) and wear your glasses.

Under User you should have yourself setup.
If not add yourself as a user.

Select your gender and height and then click advanced.
Don't bother with neck measurements, they're DK1 related.
Use the IPD calibration utility to measure your IPD.
Make sure you stare directly at the green line when running through the calibration.

Make sure the tickbox below the IPD about personal settings is ticked.

Close the advanced section.

Click on Show Demo Scene and check everything is OK in there.

It should not be blurry (well it always will a bit, if you see like a fabric pattern this is normal and called the Screen door effect and is to do with you seeing the gaps between the pixels).

If the Demo Scene is OK then try Elite again.
If there is no change then you may need to set your IPD for the game manually. Post back here if you need help with that. I use the demo scene a fair bit to check everything is OK with the rift before playing games. If something is messed up in there then the issue is related to the Rift. If it is OK in there then any issues are normally game related.

I'd say it depends on if you think you'll be getting a consumer version or not and can you afford to pay for a new GPU now and potentially pay for another GPU when you buy the consumer rift (either to SLI them up if VR SLI turns out to solve the latency issue or just the best card you can buy in a year's time).

If people with high end hardware are struggling to hit 1080p at 75hz now you can imagine what it's going to be like at 1440p at 90hz when the consumer version releases. A single 970 might not cut it (I can run a lot of stuff at 1440p at 75hz with the options turned down on my overclocked 980, I'm expecting to SLI or buy a new card for consumer and still have to put stuff on low to hit 90hz at 1440p).

Hopefully FD improve performance for the rift, they have already to a degree, just not enough.

I posted this in another thread - but thought it might be worth adding here as it is Rift related:

Since Beta 2.0 arrived, I have seen a significant performance drop in the game, and I've only just recently had the chance to take a closer look at this. There have been a few graphical changes, so it's to be expected that there would be a performance hit - but what I noticed seemed to be far too drastic for purely being down to a few graphical enhancements!

I have now had the chance to do some testing, and this is what I have so far. I may try and do something more extensive later.

All these tests are based on my Oculus Rift DK1, mainly because it is here that every frame per second counts.

My set up is as follows:
i5 2500k
GTX 780 Superclocked
8gb RAM
Oculus Rift - DK1
Nvidia Drivers: 344.11

Game Settings:
Resolution: 1280x800
Graphics: Default High

Important Note: There have been no changes on my system between Beta 1.06 and Beta 2.04.

Tests

Beta 1.06

Outside Station: 72-82fps +
Inside Station: 60-62fps
On Pad: 62-66fps

Beta 2.04

Outside Station: 57-62fps
Inside Station: 44-52fps
On Pad: 45-46fps

As I mentioned the changes in graphics might be expected to have a performance hit...but I told myself that it shouldn't be such a dramatic change!!

So - I tested OFFLINE Play. The tutorial missions are Offline. You can test this for yourself; load up Tutorial Mission One - and then disconnect from the Internet. The Mission will work perfectly...you will even be able to get docking requests accepted (something usually handled by the server). Added to this, you will be able to load up and play any of the other Tutorial Missions without connecting to the Internet again.

Therefore I decided to do a test on...

Tutorial One - Docking:

Outside Station: 88-94fps
Inside Station: 60-64fps
On Pad: 60-64fps

First thought that came into my head is that the tutorial missions have no other ships in the station. And that this means it is easier on the GPU. However keep that in mind, and then compare my Tutorial Frame Rates to the Beta 1.06 Frame Rates - they are almost exactly the same! The Tutorial Beta 2.04 has the new graphics, yet the performance is the same as Beta 1.06!

My provisional conclusion, before I do more tests? I may well be adding 2+2 and coming up with 5 here. But my feeling is that there is some serious stuff being processed on the PC in regards to networking, and that this is causing a massive hit on the games overall performance.

I've generally had the feeling that short pauses in game play were network related. I don't think it is network processing, as such, it makes more sense to me if that code is just not as parallel to the rest of the code as it should be. It should be on it's own thread where the general display isn't contingent on it completing to be smooth. But that is good news because hopefully it is a big gain for a relatively small fix.

I think with this type of thing hitting your frame rate you'd see a high general frame rate with moments of a very low frame rate. As opposed to getting to a station and the average coming down a bit while you are there. So a graph of frame rate would be more interesting than an average.

2.05 is incoming as I type. So who knows what has changed.

About 2 seconds for me and then it all goes black. I was getting tired of watching it anyway; been there since Alpha!

That's weird, why it does display it different for the DK2? I guess it's broken, also the local solar system map does not display well
