ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Hi, i just bought E:D, because DK2 is around corner. I did some testing with my 3D projector and noticed that there is zero separation on elements outside ship so basically those are rendered in 2D and look quite bad. Cockpit is very nice in 3D. Is there something that can be done to fix this and is it known issue?

I'm not saying your wrong, but have you considered that Depth Perception for our eyes in the real world from the perceived parallax of objects in our view is limited to (exact figures are speculative) 300 - 500 meters, and this is with full ocular acuity (super mega ultra hi-res of the eyes compared to an LCD screen), and that due to the current Rift (even DK2) the resolution limits this parallax ability to maybe (exact figure is speculative) 20 - 50 meters ?

3D TV and other fake 3D used in the media up till now has generally exaggerated the parallax to make the images more "impressive" (ability to make objects jump out of the screen), for a VR headset, there cannot be any exaggeration of parallax, or else the user may feel:
1) sick.
2) never achieve presence.

As screens used in VR headsets get higher resolutions, the parallax effect will become more useful at further and further distances.

I personally find using 1080p in VR, in ED very good, but indeed objects more than 30-50 meters away do essentially become 2D, the DK2, with head tracking for head translation will help alleviate this effect, and enable depth cues at larger ranges due to parallax occurring due to translation of the head :)

Or I might be talking rubbish lol

It really look bad at the moment when using 3D projector SBS mode(any of them, including Rift mode). Unplayable 3D for me. However i have looked some youtube videos that is done with Rift HW connected and in use and at least those videos shows real 3D everywhere! I can watch those videos with my projector and yes separation in every object :) So i have to ask why 3D SBS normal mode and rift modes without rift hardware is "bugged"? Not that it means much too long as my DK2 will arrive soon i hope but could be nice for those that will not want rift for some reason...

BTW. You said with Rift objects became essentially 2D but videos i watched even the farthest objects like stars have good amount of separation(some point separation is same off course, like it should be). Look this video it shows separation everywhere Some Youtube Rift Video

Here is picture that shows problem with SBS 3D i have --> 3D SBS no separation at all outside cockpit

jabokai, i ordered at 8:23am :)

was pure chance, just happened to hop on PC at work for somethting and ordered process was up :)

I think thats because of what I said regarding not seeing parallax after a certain distance, all the rocks in view are most likely at least 200m away.

I created a gif of your screen shot:
JaMiR.gif

I have taken a couple of screen shots approaching a rock, here is the first:
Hewster_1.gif
You can see there is some separation here on the edge of the rock, plus where the rock is nearer to the ship on the right, there is more separation.

I then took a second screen shot with the rock bumping into the ship (still probably 10 meters from the camera):
Hewster_2.gif

As you can see the separation is even bigger when the rock is closer.

I think this does show what I was saying in previous post that the parallax is only evident on objects within around 40-60 meters of the camera, and this would be correct for representing "real life" on a 1080p screen :)

Having said all that... I think you are correct, that sbs without the rift attached has less separation (by looking at that vid you linked to), although the parallax of the objects seem to be the same.

I will try taking some screen shots with my rift later to confirm, its possible we need to raise a ticket about this (might be why people are saying NVIDIA 3D isn't working right too)

I think this depends on the individual. On my DK1 everything has depth to it, even the stars and planets seem a long way away.

But I know people that when using my DK1, on the settings I use - they say the distant objects look flat and close.

So it certainly seems to be on a person by person basis.

I'd say that is a separate issues to SBS 3D on a projector though.

I agree, everything looks as it should to me in the rift, but I was implying that depth perception based on the parallax of objects is non-existent after a certain distance, and this is increasingly diminished the lower the resolution that is used.
There does seem to be a problem with non-rift sbs though, I'll try and find time later to do some more tests, and submit a ticket if I find a problem :)

For anyone else reading this... playing ED in the rift is amazing, and don't worry about these last few posts if your waiting for a DK2, your experience will be fantastic (assuming they have DK2 fully implemented!)

Backed :)
Hope they make it !

They should do, 4 hours to raise £200? The guy running the KS will get a mate to stump up the final few quid as a 'backer' if needs be ;)

I backed at the Oculus Rift experience level. It looks like a really interesting concept they're trying there

Well done, first in queue as far as ED backer's go... As far as we know!

Well I could of ordered that early, probably. I anticipated there would be a gap in the ED order times and thought I'd be of service to the people not so quick off the mark and help fill that little gap.

Some of you DK1 owners may already be aware of this, but for those of us who are Rift virgins, this website has a list of rift enabled games and demos, including links to the developer homepages and download links.

Its obviously currently only for DK1's (I think) but will hopefully begin to include games and demos for the DK2 when they start shipping.

Looking forward to trying some of them free demos!

Got the email from OR informing that the remaining money would be taken in the next few days. Is it time to start checking for a delivery date yet then. ;)
