ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Indeed. I can't wait for this:

I like that green. Gives it a retro 1980s monitor look.

I LOVE the blue! Pretty please, FD?

Where did these come from btw? Are they from FD as mockups of what is to come? Or fan created? (in which case FD should hire the fan!)

OR DK2 shipping delayed for a week. Booooooooo
This only affects people who are in the 1st batch, apparently it won't have knock-on effects for later orders.

Double booooooooo

Various HUD colour scheme screen shots have been floating around since Alpha 1. Just use a paint package to adjust the colours.

So if you order a DK2 today when would you be able to actually get it? WOuld it be within the enxt three months? Or a lot longer?

Does anyone know?

And do I understand this correctly that even with the DK2 text is barely readable?

I think current shipping dates are sept but you can check on the official site. and reports from some are that the text is very legible.

Hmm september isn't too far away... but still $480 is a lot.-.. but it IS an awesome piece of tech...

On the other hand, if the CV1 is released three or four months after september...

Gah I am torn in two by this! ;)

It would be great if they just started mass producing the DK2 and once the CV1 is released sell it as a cheaper variant as an entry point into VR.

If that thing had a few weeks shipping time I'd buy one right away regardless of the price.

the thing is, their plan is for the CV1 to cost LESS to produce than the DK2, so really there will be no point at all carrying on with DK2 once CV1 is ready.

I doubt it from the statements they've made about wanting it to be ready for prime-time - they may even need to wait for average PC GPU specs to come up to scratch.

Who knows - they may even release a DK3 depending on how far away from the actual CV1 that DK2 turns out to be.

It is a bit of a gamble on should you wait for CV1.

My machine should just cope with DK2 and as long as it does I'll be happy for the time being.

What did you go from and to? I'm running a 2gb 660 GTX and I'm a little concerned about DK2 performance from some of the things I've been reading.

Well me and my computer builder mate spent Sunday afternoon shoehorning a 7970 into my HTPC. I didn't think my 6870 would be up to powering the DK2 lovely card but only 1G. This card is just starting too become affordable now.
It fitted with +2/3 mm precision which meant getting the lid on became an art form. Well hopefully I'm ready for DK2 now. CPU might be a little weak but I can OC it. Thankfully we mounted dual water-cooling push-pull externally giving a good thermal overhead.

This..

I have a dk2 on order since February. I also backed the CastAr ar/vr glasses. I would like to know if ED has any plans of supporting CastAr. Of the two, I think I might just prefer the CastAr approach, but it's hard to say until I've tried both.
