ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

See all these problems will be ironed out by the time those of us further down the list get ours. We were wise to be slow to order

If you have problems with DK2 ('The Oculus Service is not available') then this might help:

Try this:-

Shutdown the Oculus App in the Taskbar
Navigate too C:\Program Files (x86)\Oculus\Service
Run OVRService_x86.exe
Navigate too C:\Program Files (x86)\Oculus\Tools
Run OculusConfigUtil.exe

There's an important piece of info here for you guys that don't have your hardware yet.

When in Direct Mode, your DK2 will always look like it's asleep until something starts rendering to it. That means when you plug it in, the screen will be black and the orange light will be on. That is perfectly normal. Only once an app starts will the screen fire up and the blue light come on. That's Direct Mode.

In Extended Mode it operates like your DK1 - as another monitor on your desktop and the blue light stays on.

Applications have to be compiled with 0.4 to make use of Direct Mode.

Took me a while to figure that out.. They should really write that in the instruction book! I was convinced my display was broken

Elite Dangerous is my go to game unfortunately, but I have tested it on
The Oculus Demos (both of which work perfectly).

Have you had enough experience with the DK2, to form an opinion on it against your Riftup DK1? Or are you stull trying to get it to work.

Sorry for being a nag, my Dk2 is still pending. :(

Its hard to say at the moment because I'm still trouble shooting...
Id say the screen is clearer in the RiftUp though, but not by much

OK had a very quick chance to set mine up at work, first thing i noticed was resolution, i was cautiously optimistic about how much of an improvement there would be, well im glad to say its a MASSIVE improvement over DK1, i was quite shocked.

Im now confident text etc in ED will be easily readable and cant wait to play ED with it. Exit pupil through new lenses is WAY WAY better, image is clearer with less blurriness and distortion, massive improvment.

Unit dosent feel any havier than DK1 actually feels more comfortable to me, and seems to be less fogging issues as is better ventilated, but will see on that.

really happy so far. Not had any luck with direct mode during my brief play about but will leave that now until i get home.

Also have i missed something? why are people trying to play ED with this at the moment, i didnt know it was updated for DK2 yet?

So, has anyone played ED with DK2 yet?

I had DK1 - sold it and am wavering between DK2 and CV1. Specific questions:

1. What build are you using? PB2.02?
2. Does it work?
3. If not, will the B1 patch it to work?
4. Can you read ALL of the text with the DK2?

I will say that with DK1 the immersion and fun I had was amazing once I got it dialed in, but the fact that I could not read the text was a killer for me. Thus the sale of the unit. (well that and the fact that I got more than I spent on it and more than DK2 is being sold for!)

Cheers guys!

In your opinion (if you've played enough) is the simulator a roughly accurate example of what you see?

http://vr.mkeblx.net/oculus-sim/

that simulator is junk, even DK1 looks worse than in reality, but then some of that is to do with the fact that your looking on that simulator on a desktop monitor.

DK2 looks quite a bit better IMHO. Start the simulator and put it in a window about 9 inches wide by 6" high. Thats nearer to how it looks to me on the DK2 only with the image covering entire field of view. Id say the screen door is still less noticeable than even that due to the pentile arrangement.

you have to look for the screen door now, when with DK1 it was right in your face.

its surprisingly good. After seeing this id say if they go with a 2560x1440 screen for CV1 then it will be sufficient for general consumers. Not perfect but plenty good enough.

The pentile OLED display makes a difference I think to colour vibrancy and clarity though...

For example, the RiftUps LED screen seems superior now to the DK2, despite being technically the same res.

Regards testing can one of you check low persistence out and what affect frame rate drops have on it?
You need to run a game at 75FPS with the DK2 set at 75Hz to get low persistence but I'm not sure how you turn it on or if it's automatic.
I'm interesting in knowing what happens when your framerate drops below 75FPS.
A good test in E: D is ensure you have a minimum of 75FPS at all times generally by tweaking settings in an area of space you normally have a high frame rate at and then go to a ring system/dock and see what happens.

Does it flicker or do you suddenly get smearing of the image etc?

Had it confirmed by two other testers that DK2 support is not working.
Must be the new SDK.
Guess we wait for a patch...
