ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Just a quick question, sort of related question - I know there is always something new around the corner in terms of chipsets, CPUs and GPUs, but is there anything really worth hanging on for just now?

I'm fed up of my PC and am at the point of just building a new one, circa £1500 (which is probably z97, i7-4790K, 780Ti/R9-290X, re-utilising some parts of my current setup).

I expect a price drop when the gtx 880 gets introduced late September to november

Had a look at DCS a while ago, some things are just perfect for the rift. ED and DCS are the best two.

But where are the Thargoids? :p

BTW ... My custom skin just arrived...

It'll take 4k rift before DCS will be any way usable. It's fine now to fly around but forget about getting into the aircraft systems and doing anything meaningful. Resolution isn't good enough yet. I love dcs but not as good as elite in the rift.

Oculus have been preaching the 'designed for vr' line for over a year. DCS -V- elite is a prime example why. Elite cockpit and systems are designed with the low (relative) resolution of the rift in mind. DCS was designed for a monitor and it really shows.

Has there been any talk of solving the "judder" issue that occurs when you're moving your head around?

I have a pretty powerful rig, and even with all settings on low I get a "judder/stutter" when moving my head around. The game itself seems to be running smoothly, just the head movement causes this.

Other Rift demos work great, and are smooth as butter (Technolust, that futuristic racing game).

There are a couple of things you could try...

Set colour to windows basic
Calibrate camera position ... Try also moving further away from the camera
Turn off SLI (if you have it)
Try turning off shadows and bloom in game
Force vsync in NVIDIA panel but turn off triple buffering.

Technolust, that furturistic racing game?

Its a cyberpunk 80s-90s sci fi styled game in which you are a hacker :) There's flying cars in it if thats what you mean?..

I have found that my rift only works with elite if Elite its not in full screen, otherwise it minimise and I can see only the descktop.
Any idea for this strange behavior?

Hi! Totally new here but I also have this problem. I can see the mouse both in-game and on the desktop and when I click, it registers the click on the desktop and minimises it.

I found a workaround though. I control everything with the keyboard. Some controls (eg the galaxy map) I had to remap to my joystick but it works ok. I'd love to be able to use it properly though!

The config tool should grey out once you kill the two process and tracking should work in elite in extended mode. Do not touch the config app once you've closed the processes and launch Elite.. Let me know what you see...

Still no joy.. :(

----

1. Download the runtime and (optional) SDK

Done

http://static.oculusvr.com/sdk-downl...ion_Manual.pdf

Driver (runtime) was installed prior to connecting, and device wired properly (minus the accessory power connector).

3. Make sure you update the firmware.

Done

4. Test using the small room demo and / or Oculus world using direct mode.

Done and working fine. Both camera and rift light are blue.

5. If they work, calibrate your IPD and tracking zone using the config app and small room. I find putting the camera on the back wall and moving the desk forward allows for more wiggle room.

Done

6. If everything is cool, switch to extended mode inside the config app. For the moment keep the monitor set to primary.

Done

7. Not sure about AMD, but for NVIDIA cards you will need to change the orientation of the screen, so that it appears the correct way round. This can be done in the NVIDIA control panel. Whilst you are in there, create a 3d settings profile for ED and set antialiasing and triple buffering to on.

(AMD) Done. Also disabled crossfire and created profile.

8. Lastly in the NVIDIA control panel, set the Rift refresh rate to 75 hz.

(AMD) - extended screen (Rift) defaults to 75 hz.

9. Ok now open up the oculus config file again and hit Ctrl , Alt and Del. in task manager, close wscrip.exe and ovservice.exe in processes.

Oculus configuration screen turns grey. Camera light turn off, rift light remain blue and extended screen is visible in the rift.

10. If its NOT Elite Dangerous you are wanting to play at this point, you will need to set the rift now as the primary monitor. If its Elite Dangerous you want, just open the game.

Done

11. In options / graphics make sure the refresh rate is set to 75 hz and v sync is on. Switch to Oculus mode and set display to secondary monitor.

Done - Oculus W speakers

12. Once in game, lean back in your chair and hit F12 to reset the rift and avoid clipping. If you are still not happy, move your desk away from the wall and reset again. (Assuming you have the camera mounted in the wall behind the desk.)

Camera is not tracking, looking at a fixed background. :(

13. Done :)

I wish... :(

*If you are getting a message saying oculus service not available, go to your oculus folder and open the inside the services folderovrservice_x86 or x64. Then open the config.exe inside the tools folder.

(Aside - and of interest) There has to be something wrong somewhere, as I cannot get the rift to be recognized following your asterix. The service starts, and is visible in task manager, yet starting the config utility remains grey even thought the rift is still active (blue light). (EDIT) - However, if I then disconnect the rift USB connector and plug it into the next port, the device resets causes the rift to be detectable again by the configuration utility (rinse and repeat)

Hey everyone.

Got the DK2 working great in extended mode. The light on my camera does not come on, but I can still lean in and stuff so I'm pretty sure it's working.

Is there a way I can mirror my DK2 display onto my main monitor?

If it works then leave it alone :p

Mirroring will come later with the new updates SDK...
Michael said they are having issues though and have contacted oculus...

I managed to get a view of the elite window by using OBS (open broadcast software), but the preview seems very flaky and as soon as you lose it, you have to fire up ED again. I'm using a fairly old version of OBS, however.

someone posted a link to this on reddit:

I've yet to try it myself as I'm at work, but that might be an idea.

And FWIW, as of beta 1.02, the light on my camera doesn't come on either, though I still have full tracking motion.

My camera light is still on :S maybe it depends on where it is plugged in to?
Some saying you need a powered USB to get it going

Is the camera light on when in extended mode?
Can I also see you system specs... Particularly OS

Yes, all the way until the moment I kill the Ovr process.

Asus P8H77M, I5-3550, 24GB Crucial DDR3 1600, 2*Sapphire vapourX HD7950, 120SSD, 4TB HHD, 850W PS. - currently only one monitor connected via DP.

- Connected: Track IR 5, LGS mouse and G35 speakers, Saitek X52 and CH pedals.

Windows 8.1, current, All drivers up to date including AMD 14.6(rc) drivers.

I can only think of three things...

1. Change the camera to a powered USB port (at least a different port)
2. Update firmware again
3. Disconnect TrackIR
4. Try plugging in the power supply to the rift

I'm having the judder too but I've noticed that the judder even occurs in the main menu. That is, a completely black screen with a few bits of 2d graphics and text on it. No amount of adjusting settings is having any impact. Do we all get juddering in the main menu? Even those for whom dropping some settings works out?
