ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

So can somebody tell me if Elite supports low-persistance with the DK2? I was playing last night and everything seemed to blur when I moved my head.

To view fps in-game is ctrl F I think. But where does the read out appear with the rift on?

It doesn't..use fraps to record the fps over a certain period of time ( I use 120s ) ... Then hit f11 and when you are ready to test. You can test in a variety of locations by hitting f11 each time.

When you are done, exit Elite and go to fraps folder ... The info is in a notebook file, with each test time stamped. If you are doing specific tests, you might want to write down on a pen and paper what, when and where you were testing...

Eg. 10.08. inside Dahan Station ... Settings high... No AA
10 .11 inside Dahan Station ... Settings high ... AA

Dk2 8/10

DK2 arrived on Thursday, but I've been babysitting, so I haven't really had a chance to play with it much beyond setup and getting it working (still a bit hit and miss).

FIRST IMPRESSION
WOWSERS :eek: Its pretty much what I was expecting, but in this case the imagination does not do the reality justice. For example there was sparking and smoke in the cockpit of my viper and I could have sworn I could smell the burning. A surprise for me was the incredible 3D effect of the smoke(?) coming from the toxic canisters in scenario 1. AMAZING!

The negatives are;
1. the resolution of the ships in combat at a distance very hard to see, but I'm going to try contact lenses later today to see if that helps.
2. If you keep your head still, the textures and detail are great, but as soon as I move, the judder is distracting, for this reason the space stations are hard to look at. I guess this is down to my frame rate. I am going to test that also a bit later, but I guess the only answer to that would be to overclock my GPU (AMD R9 270X) or buy a new rig (not going to happen in the near future)
3. A very minor gripe. I can see very faint geometric shapes in the star fields.
4. The galaxy map is difficult (not impossible) to use. I select a star with the mouse and if I have not zoomed in enough it clcks out side the game and I have to remove the rift to select ED in the task bar. The map menu is operated with my game pad (which is my contoller) and takes a bit of getting used to. The menu is also difficult to read because it is too far off to the side.
5. Screen door effect is noticeable but not enough to lessen the enjoyment.

In the config utility it has measurements for eye to neck distance. The presets are a bit extreme so I got out the ruler (steady!) but its hard to know where you a measuring to. Also I'm not sure that makes a great deal of difference, but I wanted to leave no stone unturned.

I work at home and usually have a two monitor setup. I thought I would be able to plug the rift into the HDMI socket as a third monitor. I could not get the rift connected, so I had to unplug the second monitor and use the provided HDMI/DVI adaptor to use the rift as a second monitor. Not having the second monitor caused huge problems in the setup of ED, because it only partially appeared in the rift and was so distorted I could not operate the menus. I finally got ED to open in the remaining monitor (no idea how) but the window was so small and the text even smaller because it was already in Rift mode, that I still could not read the menus and ended up having to guess which buttons I was pressing.

Anyway my tip is: take photos of the menus before you start. Do all your graphic setup BEFORE you connect the rift.

Is there a way to force a program to open in a particular display?

I sometimes lose tracking. I think this is when my head goes out of bounds of the camera, and end up having to shut down and restart. I have just down loaded the Oculus Service Manager that a previous poster recommended, so hopefully that will remove the need to reboot.

This post is longer than I intended so I will finish with a big shout out to SlackR for all his helpful posts. THANKS!! (already repped)

Warning for DK2 owners -

Do not use the supplied cloth, or any other cloth for that matter, to clean the lenses. After reading this thread there seems to be some issues with the lens quality...

https://developer.oculusvr.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=11704

There are a few alternative lens cleaning methods mentioned in that thread that may be a better approach.
Looking at the picture he posted, I would guess he has kept the cloth lying about and has got dirt/grit in it. I keep mine the bag provided and have had no such problem

glad its working... The micro stuttering could be fixable from your end by changing to windows basic or toning down the graphics settings, but some things have become apparent over the last 24 hours...

1. Extended mode is more brutal on your GPU that (hopefully) direct mode will be.
2. The new Beta .3 has caused stuttering issues for whatever reason for a lot of people (and not just rift users)
3. It is worth taking the time to set up your rift to suit your own face dimensions.
4. Lenses scratch very easily. Two best workarounds seem to be compressed air and the Lenspen
5. Windows 8.1 doesn't always play nice with the DK2 and neither do older AMD CPUs. (Closing the oculus config.exe in task manager along with the other two processes has worked for some)
6. I post too much on this forum :p

Off to go shoot some bad guys!!! Pew pew!

dk2

Many thanks Slacker. Managed to get DK2 working with ED by following your instructions (mostly)! This is a game changer. Have you tried standing up while flying? Its like you've stuck your head into space. Graphics not quite right yet but still amazing.

Glad its working

Any news about a DirectToRift mode for ED yet? I see a lot of unity demos popping out with direct support as for instance OceanRift. Would like to see some performance comparisons between direct and extended, heared the direct mode is so much smoother..
Hope it'll be implemented in ED when my dk2 finally arrives this month!
