ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Question to all.

Since the rift configuration utility is disabled in the current setup to play and kn owing that the game configuration request the commander's genre, anyone knows if the game is reading the rift profile parameters - like IPD and height?

I have my height set in the rift profile yet in game I seem to have one very tall torso... like having a hip to eyes about 1 1/2 time higher than my ole self.

I'm curious about this as well. Things look good in the cockpit, but outside, the stars are all doubled with some grey blur. Everything plays great, but it seems like it needs to be tuned up a little. so bump.

Yep got mine Saturday here in Adelaide :)

What time did you order?

Mine just got delivered !
It does appear that there is a central hub in Austarlia for Australian orders and they are then getting shipped out from there.

Getting very impatient now! I am guessing we have had the first 2 batches that Oculus were talking about but the lack of any stock for the last week or so is a bit frustrating! I want it now!!! ;)

My wife has just offered to buy me a dk2 after seeing my new trackir in action. However I am unsure if it is suitable for someone with limited technical know how. I was initially thinking of waiting until a consumer version was out but time goes on and people do seem to expound about the dk2. So, do you think it worth while? How easy (or hard) is it to get working? I don't mind fiddling around a bit! And finally, how do you use the keyboard at the same time? Forgive me if the questions are either naive or asked before!

Its a mixture of flawless through to royal PITA.

as time goes on hopefully the ratio of flawless : PITA will improve.

(despite spending plenty of time fiddling for instance I STILL cant get euro truck simulator working, which is a shame as i only bought it for VR.)

keyboard at the same time if you cant tought type your way around the keyboard is a toughie.

you CAN see a bit out of the bottom of your mask for random key presses but for the most part I would say its not really do-able (unless you can touch type).

Many have gotten voice attack to set up basic keyboard commands.

i have ordered an X55 as it has buttons galore.

No regrets at all from me, but I would say for a complete PC technophobe it is still a WIP.

Provided you have a pretty decent rig, id say the pros outweigh the cons every time! :)

Yeah, you an me both. I'm hoping I get mine this week though. It'd be nice if Oculus gave some indication of what batch they're currently delivering.

I rolled back to previous Nvidia drivers (can't remember the number but it was the last official release before the current drivers) and my judder dissapeared :) I mean its till slight in the cockpit when in space station but apart from that its quite smooth. I am running on a mixture of low to medium settings and my GPU is only a 570 (I have plans to upgrade this week) but its such a drastic improvement for me from just rolling back my drivers. Give it a shot guys! :)

Hmmmm, what you could be seeing is increased framerate, hence the judder disappearing. I might try rolling back drivers also...

I don't think this is the latest either. I'm sure Slopey was green before.

Weekend in the Rift

I spent a good few hours in the dk2 rift playing ED this weekend, and I am absolutely blown away. I used to be a cross country glider pilot, in my spare time many years ago. I always loved the sense of freedom that gliding gave me, and I can honestly say that I get this same feeling of freedom playing Elite Dangerous, in the Rift.

I struggled with combat on a monitor, I'd usually get my ass kicked by AI, but with the rift its a totally different story. The head tracking is just so good, and the depth perception helps so much.

I've flown 3 ships in the rift, sidewinder, eagle, and the hauler. I absolutely love how each of the cockpits make the familiar HUD set up fit each cockpit. If the cockpit is wide then the depth of the displays stays kind of at the nose end of the cockpit. If it's narrow then the displays at the edge are positioned increasingly closer to you as they get to the edges. Each of the cockpits is just a pure joy to be in, and look around. not just outside but inside as well.

I bought a docking computer just for the hell of it on the hauler. When the docking computer takes over, I can just look around and admire the station in a way that's hard to do when docking manually. Its a real treat in the rift.

I have a 4k monitor, and the visual fidelity of ED is impressive in 4k, but having now played ED in the rift, there's now no other way I would wish to play ED. Visual Fidelity will improve over time for the rift, but there is just no substitute for actually feeling like your there. I am so impressed, and FD have done such an amazing job. I can see me still loving ED a decade from now

On a normal monitor I found landing on the pad in stations quite difficult. However, with the DK2 and the depth perception it's a doddle - a much more pleasurable experience.

I managed to get my first real proper session on the game last night and it was awesome. A few little things I think need ticketing with regards the rift experience, but for the most part it's mind-blowing to just strap in and spend a few hours as a space trader.

The bit that still gets me is docking in the rift. I don't mean I can't dock, I can, quite well, what I mean is that as you come through that portal and look about for your docking bay, the sense of presence and scale is brought into perspective making docking just a joy. They've also made it a good deal easier since PB, I think. Either that or the rift is allowing me a level of accuracy you can't get when playing on a monitor.

The other thing that gets me is that I'm getting neck ache while playing because I spend so much time looking through the top of my cockpit at people I'm trying to shoot down. :D

Oculus Rift Dk2 Experience: Must See Things In Elite

A number of people have started to receive the Oculus Rift Dk2 in the last few weeks, myself included. I have to say it's just mind blowingly good!
Not really played the beta yet as pretty much all my time has been spent just looking at things and saying "wow" a lot.

One thing that I thought was truly amazing was the Galactic Map when viewing live trade routes. The suns and trade animations are simply breath taking as they animate right past your head. You can't help but to try and reach out and grab a sun.

If you have an OR DK2 and have not looked at the trade routes part of the galactic may then I would really recommend it.

On these points

1) Rift makes everything better, even your ability to park.

2) Neck ache stops after you build up the muscles for it :) I've had mine a year now and my neck is alot stronger than it used to be. Never get any ache anymore, not even when reading a kindle or working etc. Another added health benefit.

The only problem i've seen so far with my DK2 is that it hugs your face alot more than the DK1 did. So consequently when I return to work after my lunch break and after my wife comes home from work (I get in an hour earlier every day) what I've been doing is written all over my face as a massive white goggle mark around my eyes and a distinct red line where the rest of my face still has decent blood supply :D

Interesting.

I will post results once mine arrives. Here is my system spec. If this can'
t run it nothing will!

Graphite Series 760T Case in Black or White
Intel Core i7 4790K CPU Overclocked to 4.4GHz
Corsair H100i Water Cooler
Sabertooth Z97 Mark 1 Motherboard
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780Ti 3GB Video Card
16GB DDR3 1600Mhz Memory
Samsung 840 EVO SSD 250GB
2000GB Seagate HDD
24x DVD-RW Drive
Corsair RM 850W Power Supply
Microsoft Windows 8.1 64 bit or Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

am tempted to get one of these but unsure what drain it is on the system. do you need some sort of super-computer to use the oculus or is it relatively light on power/CPU/gfx drain.
cheers in advance

For comparison:

I stuck a Windforce GTX 780 Ghz edition in my PC on saturday, replacing an AMD 7950 that I was using prior to that. My complete specs are thus:

O.S.: Win 7 x64
CPU: i5 3570K clocked at 4.5Ghz
Motherboard: Mid-range Gigabyte board. Not sure on the specific model.
GPU: GTX 780 (clocked at 1090Mhz. factory stock is 1020Mhz)
RAM: 16GB

I ran a bunch of benchmarks and with settings on HIGH with only shadows turned down to MEDIUM I get an almost constant 75fps when in rift mode. I can even switch between the various AA types and only on MLAA4x do I see even the slightest hint of judder when parked in a hangar.

The stats on afterburner's graphs show that the GPU is being occasionally pummeled, as are my CPU cores.

The only time I see benchmarks hit low fps numbers are when I run one through a hyperspace. I think the framerate is given second priority to I/O at these points however as the average is still high, but the lowest rates are in the 20s.

I've yet to visit an asteroid field in the main game, however, so I should give that a try.

Only thing I can infer from the rates I'm getting, compared to yours, is that the more aggressive CPU overclock is helping. A friend of mine has an i7 hex-core K processor and he was commenting this morning that it seems that hyperthreading isn't being used (or that 6 of his 12 cores see no action when running ED, whatever that implies).

hmm I give up for the moment. Very disappointing.

Everything works fine on the demo including perfect head tracking.
I just can't get the camera track in Elite Dangerous though!? Nothing, no matter what I try !

Wow, we have very similar PCs.

I've got the Asus Maximum VI Hero mobo, and my GPU is an OCZ 770 GTX. Otherwise, same RAM, same CPU, same OS.

I don't have my DK2 (yet), but I've noticed frame rates are a lot lower in Beta 1. I'm getting (with all settings maxxed out), about 55-60 fps in stations. I used to get 70+.

Interesting you're saying you have a lot of CPU load. Maybe it is a DK2 thing, but on my monitor, my CPU doesn't go above 15% utilisation. I think it once hit 18-20 in a big asteroid field, but that's it. I'm totally bound by my GPU. RAM is about 8-9% utilisation.
