ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

There seems to be some good knowledge and expierience on here, my dream is to set myself up with a OC enabled E:D rig, that doesn't compromise too much on the graphics.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-019-OG

I'm thinking that this with a GTX780Ti plugged in should have the horse power to do that for DK2 at least? Does anyone know if that'd be the case, or would I possibly need a beefier CPU?

Pure speculation I know, but do people think such a rig could cope with the Consumer version as well?

780TI should be more than enough for the DK2 (if it isn't then nothing is).
Rather than buying that and then buying a 780ti you should just change the dropdown for GPU to 780TI (adds £330).

I'd also recommend selecting a 8350 CPU at an extra £60.
AMD CPUs aren't quite as good as Intel CPUs from what I hear (have an intel myself) but the 8350 is good. E: D is relatively CPU heavy but not that much. I do know I'm not bottlenecked by my CPU based on my monitoring.

In theory it should be good for CV1.
Maybe not able to play everything maxed out to the nines at a massive frame rate but should still be good.
When CV1 does release GPU tech will have improved and the best now will be similar to mid range cards in the future (based on how it has been for a few years).

Yes but is this purpose built or just CV1 option ... I would think that they have lots of off the shelf options now for CV1 like DK2 but will they go for purpose built for CV1 or CV2. My thinking is CV1 hi res off the shelf get it out fast Cv2 build a new line.
<edit> July..................will my GPU cope NO.
Oculus have stated in interviews that CV1 contains no components from DK2 - it's all new stuff. They've also stated clearly that the fov, weight, tracking and resolution will be better. DK2s will of course not be suddenly obsolete - they'll function perfectly.

Iribe (I think) from Oculus said that a CV2 would be 2 years or so after CV1.

Much as I would love to see a CV1 release by the end of this year, various comments from Palmer leads me to suspect we won't get a release until early 2015.

I concur.
You would expect them to have shown something at E3 if release was this year. There's lots of things that need to happen before the Rift hits the shelves. A big marketing push is one of them. E3 is the perfect event for that.

I do hear they were showing off CV1 prototypes at E3 behind closed doors.
They went from showing the Crystal cove prototype publicly (kinda at CES) to DK2 release in 6 months (Jan to July). Since the CV1 will probably require greater production and distribution along with the fore mentioned marketing the time between showing off prototypes and having units on the selves is a probably couple of months longer (6 months + a couple more).

CV2... you mean DK2 right?

Thats the reason I pulled the trigger on DK2, it seems as if it will be more than capable to show ED off in all it's glory.

I know for a fact the CV1 would be too much for my system, and as I only have a Sapphire 7870 I'm hoping that it will be just about good enough to run the game in OR mode and not have too much lag etc.

Yeah, I reckon CV1 is at least 9 months away from DK2. I can afford to spend £200 one a year on a new toy, so I'll probably buy that too. I just can'y wait that long.

I've even been tempted to fork out the £160 for TrackIR, but that would be a waste if my DK2 comes in July.

Worst case scenario would be that you could run the game at a lower resolution than native. E.g. I can run games at 1080p on my 1440p monitor and they run faster than they would at 1440p. Doesn't look as pin sharp and lovely (looks like I've smeared jam on the screen TBH) but you make sacrifices.

No, they've said in an interview that the second consumer version would probably come along about 2 years after the first consumer version, and due to Facebook money will be awesomeness squared whereas the CV1 spec is now pretty much locked down already.

Indeed!
Cv1 is being locked down ATM.

Q: Will the CV1 release date be announced in 2014? If you cannot announce that, can you announce when you will announce the CV1 release date.
Palmer Luckey: I would say the problem is that does imply that if we announce it, it comes after that date.
Nate Mitchell: All we can really say at this is, we haven’t made in announcements.
Palmer Luckey: We would like to announce, that we are going to make an announcement of when we’ll announce the release date.
Nate Mitchell: In fact, we can announce that we will announce one day the release day of the consumer Rift. But it is not today. We don’t want to announce any dates right now, but we are locking down the consumer spec. You see us ramping in terms of content and doing first party, publishing more games than ever. So we have a lot of exciting stuff coming down the pipeline, this year, next year and frankly even two years down the road. Like Palmer said we are RnDing, we are developing new stuff. Again, everyone does focus on the launch, we’re thinking much bigger picture and gamers should be really excited for what is coming.

There is the potential for microstuttering in SLI due to Alternate frame rendering. Basically each GPU is rendering every other frame, if for some reason one frame is late it can affect the next frame as one GPU is having to wait. It's most apparent at lower frame rates, less so at higher frame rates.
Nvidia and AMD have worked hard to reduce this effect but you still get about 1 frame of latency (13.333333 MS worth at 75FPS). Since Oculus are working their butts off to reduce latency even by 1 or 2 MS in the motion to photon pipeline you don't want to add any in if you can help it.

This thread covers it pretty well - http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=388803

Thanks, I've heard that a lot but, was hoping someone (Dr.Wookie) who has actually tried it, and with my setup, could say if he noticed any of that IRL. Do appreciate the reply though ;)

I thought you had a typo there.. no?

David Braben said in the register q&a they used a titan to get elite running at 75 fps on the dk2.

Hmmm... I've recently bought a new PC, i7-4770K and a 780TI. With graphics settings set to HIGH and a 1920x1080 monitor I consistently get over 100 FPS, often more like 150 FPS. Last night I tried my DK1 with it, graphics settings set to HIGH and resolution set to 1280x800 and I got an FPS of between 50 and 100. :S

Yes, there is a huge performance hit to using the DK1.

This seems to be quite unique to Elite, although most other games I have tried all have a performance hit with Rift enabled, it is nowhere near the same level as Elite.

My GTX780@1.2Ghz and my 2600K @ 4.8Ghz are doing fine with ED in the rift.
but alpha had better performance, beta on the other hand has better eyecandy.

the thing about 30 vs. 60+fps is still the same.

YES our eyes can only distinguish around 30 pictures a second.
BUT that doesn't mean that our brain is not able to work with a lot more frames in terms of smoothness in motion.

all of us can see and feel the difference even from 60 to 120fps. but we would not be able to read any text or numbers for instance on all of these 120fps, still we feel the smoothness.

in terms of the rift 60fps is fine - as long you don't suffer any motion sickness. more frames means less lag = less motion sickness.

I can play ED for hours with my rift - TRY it! the rift is the ultimate gadget for ED, I don't play ED without it because it feels boring (it isn't but you know what I mean...).

I'm just surprised that FD have been able to run a 1920x1080 Rift at 75 FPS using a Titan whereas I'm running a 1280x800 Rift and getting 50 FPS to 100 FPS with a 780TI. Unless, of course, they've turned down some of the graphical settings from HIGH which is quite possible.
