ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Cheers fellas.

Is it wrong for me to feel more excited at getting a DK2 next month than ED Beta 2 ? :p

I ordered a DK2 in early April so not long to go now. I haven't heard a bad word said against it yet, surely it can't that good!.... I'll find out soon enough :)

Can i ask a question about Oculus rift.

I know most of my life in ED will probably be a miner so i will buy OR. I hope its cool, don't let me down please. i heard it hard to read the text while using OR.

The question i need to know is will i be at a disadvantage in a dogfight, as in whats the response time like if your not using OC . will i be deadmeat ? maybe because of response time ?

I'm not here to diss OR, i just need to know if i go dogfighting isit better to take um off. (that sounds rude)

but you know what im saying, is it laggy or smooth ?

I haven't upgraded pc for about 8 years, ive been working like a dog, hopefully in 3 months time i will have money to invest in ED and play it with oculus:)

maybe have a holiday  for a year

So long as your PC is up to it - and you can get a decent frame rate, then there is no disadvantage to using the Rift. In fact you probably have a lot of advantages due to the head tracking and being able to easily follow where your targets are.

However if your PC can't get you at least 40 - 50fps with the Rift on, then it really isn't going to be very good for you. Ideally you will want at least 60fps. So that means a powerful PC and graphics card.

You didn't mention if you plan on playing Elite on that 8 year old PC or if you are planning on upgrading...

Just some more info on system performance with the Rift when compared to Side-by-Side.

This is a Side-by-Side screenshot

And this was taken in Oculus Rift mode

You can see with the Rift enabled significantly more geometry is being rendered to the screen.

In addition in Side-by-Side both images are more or less the same. However in Rift mode left and right images are significantly different from each other.

Last point I'd like to add, is that after further tests, I can confirm that the Rift causes a 50% drop on frame rate performance on the game when compared to using normal mode.

So in space I get 100 to 110 fps, in 1080p on max settings, however with the Rift enabled at the same resolution and settings I get 50 to 55fps.

Same is true for asteroid belts and inside stations it is always around a 50% hit.

Just in case anyone here has played ED on a Crystal Cove or early DK2...

Is the ED text readable on them? I've got a DK1, and I love it, but since PB came out and I need to be able to read the menus, supercruise distances etc, I've left the Rift alone and I'm just using my monitor (with the excellent EDTracker for head tracking). For the alpha1, the text didn't really matter and so I used the DK1 all the time (and it really is a fantastic experience).

I'm just wondering whether to put my name down for a DK2 or not.

I don't suppose there will be a Crystal Cove or DK2 at Lavecon?

Far as I know FD are the only people to play E: D on the DK2.
Since we don't actually know when the DK2 arrives it's hard to say it you'll see one at Lavecon (don't when this is). If Lavecon's in August then there is a good chance.

You're both correct, I'm still sulking about them going to E3 and refusing to smuggle me in in their suitcases. :D

Actually managed to do a little bit of benchmarking last night, I've only managed to get 45mins of gametime in since the last update..

But, set the game in OR mode and adjusted the GFX settings up and down and on average I get 30-40 fps inside the station 60-80 in space and if the station is in view it drops to 50-60.

Hopefully as I'm running everything at stock atm AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz and a Sapphire 7870OC with 4gb ddr3 I'll be able to tweak them a bit to improve the FPS and hopefully FD start optimising the game should help as well.

Worst case scenario is the kids piggybanks will have to be liberated yet again.:p

It's worth monitoring your PC while benchmarking E: D to see where a bottleneck may lay. http://www.hwinfo.com/ is the tool I use. You can either leave it running while benching and check the stats afterwards or use MSI afterburner's OSD to display the info while gaming. The OSD display method is most ideal as you get to see the data while gaming, checking afterwards isn't as informative as you can't see what the stats are while playing and things like a high CPU usage may have been when the game was loading rather than when it was being played. Not sure how legible the stats will be when running OR mode though.

I asked about text readability in Elite Dangerous in the HD prototype used at E3 and got the following reply. The poster definitely was there... So he likely knows.

Link: http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?p=479978#post479978

Text:

DK2 has slightly lower blue/red resolution than the HD prototype due to the subpixel arrangement.

1920x1080 RGB = 2073600 R, G and B-subpixels
1920x1080 pentile = 2073600 G, but only 1036800 R and B-subpixels.

Text should still be easier to read than on a DK1.

Oculus Rift support

I know I saw somewhere that this game is supposed to work with the Rift. I've got access to the DK1 and DK2 headsets. I was just wondering if the game works with either of them currently? Any special hoops you have to jump through to get it working?

Thanks

? Kerrash are you saying it possibly isn't? If not I will be a bit gutted, whilst not expecting perfection dk1 was too low a res for me and am banking on dk2 being better

Depends what colour the text is

"DK2 has a lot more green pixels, but the same number of red and blue

Not that exact same amount, but the same ballpark. DK1 had 640x800 per RGB channel, whereas DK2 has:

Red: ~678x764
Green: 960x1080
Blue: ~678x764

in environments where green isn't the dominant color, the 'effective resolution' will be the same even if there are technically more pixels

Resolution will be perceived depending on the amount of green that is present. If you had a yellow scene (made up of 50% red and 50% green), the effective resolution would be somewhere between 960x1080 and ~678x764. You might assume that would be 819x922 (half way between the two), but in fact it's higher due to the way the human eye perceives each primary colour.

We see more detail in red than blue, and more detail in green than red. The developer of Pentile pixel arrangement was aware of this, hence why the green channel was chosen to carry the "full" number of sub-pixels per channel. And thanks to evolution our brains are also great at "filling in the missing data" - when all 3 color channels are present, our brains will use the green channel to increase the perceived resolution of red and blue.
"

Quote from John Carmack
"Green on black text may make a comeback for VR -- no chromatic aberration and full pentile resolution. Reminds me of old Apple ][ monitors."
