Right you lot....

Someone post a quick idiot guide for setting up the DK2 in windows and getting ED to be on it. :D

While I am a dev I have never worked with OR. Although my girlfriend wants me to develop something for OR that would be fun for our house pig. She wants to call it Pigulus Drift as she thinks our pig will stagger in circles.
Virtual Farm....Hmmmmm

When my DK2 comes I'm going to see what my pig thinks of it. I don't think OR was geared for pigs to wear so I doubt she'll get the full 3d effect...but fun to see what happens.

WTH!? Have I somehow walked into a virtual world already with weird, virtual FD forums? :S I have the strangest feeling that I've actually been wearing Oculus Rift CV8 for months and have forgotten... I need to pull my face off! ;)

Some interesting reading for those with pending orders.

The Manual/

http://static.oculusvr.com/sdk-downloads/documents/Oculus_Rift_DK2_Instruction_Manual.pdf

It's actually pretty basic, really.

Instructions boil down to:

Put on head.
Plug in
Use.

Someone wants to discuss scale with the manual writer. That is not 5 ft between the user and his positional camera in the diagram.

Hows this working for any lucky users so far? My hotas sits on my desk which is a fair bit smaller than 5ft wide :S

I wouldnt worry too much about this ... Move your chair back another foot (max) or tip it back if it tilts. Then hit f12. This puts you in a more realistic position in the cockpit when you are seated at the desk and avoids clipping the chair / body when looking around. The range of motion is sufficient (for me) to do everything I need to do in ship, without losing track of my position.

Ok so i got my rift, may have ballsed things up by plugging it in before downloading the oculus runtime. can't see anyway to set 75 hz outside of ED config.

Shows up as a generic vga device on device manager. disabled the wscript.exe and the oculus64(etc).exe cant remember its name. but it looks a bit ghosty and the colours are off, but even so . . . . oh my ****ing god, I was sat in my sidewinder which was surprisingly roomy

SlackR if your there ? I need guidance man ;)

Sorry to but in as well. I have followed your instructions to get Elite working with my dk2, When I load the game I can see that the headtracking works on my monitor, but through the rift I just see part of my desktop and its horizontal. Im not getting any of the game though the rift. Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance :)

fix for DK2 until SDK is updated...

1. Download the runtime and (optional) SDK
2. Set up the Rift by following the instructions ...

http://static.oculusvr.com/sdk-downloads/documents/Oculus_Rift_DK2_Instruction_Manual.pdf

3. Make sure you update the firmware.
4. Test using the small room demo and / or oculus world using direct mode.
5. If they work, calibrate your IPD and tracking zone using the config app and small room. I find putting the camera on the back wall and moving the desk forward allows for more wiggle room.
6. If everything is cool, switch to extended mode inside the config app. For the moment keep the monitor set to primary.
7. Not sure about AMD, but for NVIDIA cards you will need to change the orientation of the screen, so that it appears the correct way round. This can be done in the NVIDIA control panel. Whilst you are in there, create a 3d settings profile for ED and set antialiasing and triple buffering to on.
8. Lastly in the NVIDIA control panel, set the Rift refresh rate to 75 hz.
9. Ok now open up the oculus config file again and hit Ctrl , Alt and Del. in task manager, close wscrip.exe and ovservice.exe in processes.
10. If its NOT Elite Dangerous you are wanting to play at this point, you will need to set the rift now as the primary monitor. If its Elite Dangerous you want, just open the game.
11. In options / graphics make sure the refresh rate is set to 75 hz and v sync is on. Switch to oculus mode and set display to secondary monitor.
12. Once in game, lean back in your chair and hit F12 to reset the rift and avoid clipping. If you are still not happy, move your desk away from the wall and reset again. (Assuming you have the camera mounted in the wall behind the desk.)
13. Done :)

*If you are getting a message saying oculus service not available, go to your oculus folder and open the inside the services folderovrservice_x86 or x64. Then open the config.exe inside the tools folder.

Are you in extended mode? In graphics options (in game) did you set the display to secondary?

All I have done is set extended desktop mode in the rift config utility, the rift is on / blue LED. In nvidia control pannel my BenQ monitor is 2 Primary and Rift DK2 is 1 secondary, and obviously portrait not landscape!

Take a look at the instructions I just posted.. If it's still not working, let me know :) sounds like you are good to go

video through DK2 lens uploading now.

A word of warning, i took one for the team a bit here as i now have a couple of scratches on the lens i was filming through, the lenses on DK2 scratch VERY EASY. I just lightly touched the phone case on it and 2 scratches! they dont seem to show when viewing through it so not the end of the world but if you are going to film through em then might be worth putting the plastic sleeve that came stuck to it back on first.

Its not the best quality but the best i can do with me samsung S3 at the minute. it looks way sharper and better by eye but should give you an idea of how readable the menus are at least, easily playable now.

Youtubes compression is making look a bit worse also.

I'm finding the menu text quite hard to read. pixels seem absolutely huge. I cant set 75 hz in windows by going to advanced settings of the screen resolution, no options are available and the advanced setting monitor tab shows generic vga.

I think this may be because i was supposed to download the oculus runtime before I plugged the oculus in ? but you know how it is, new toy and all :)
