ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

I am also new to the forum. Picked up the beta and the expansion pass today. Also gonna go grab an X52 tomorrow as I am picking up my DK2 from UPS tomorrow after work!

Very excited to try it all out.

"gonna wait for consumer version yall are crazy to drop 350+ on a dev kit"

always makes me smile when i read these comments,

DK1 cost me about £75 as i resold about 5 weeks ago for 2/3rds the cost i paid for it.

Will do the same with DK2 near release of CV1 and no doubt ill get a good chunk of that cost back as well.

alot of people dont seem to get that....:S

taking the money i got back from DK1 and putting it towards DK2, in the near term DK2 has cost me about £60

fix for DK2 until SDK is updated...

1. Download the runtime and (optional) SDK
2. Set up the Rift by following the instructions ...

http://static.oculusvr.com/sdk-downloads/documents/Oculus_Rift_DK2_Instruction_Manual.pdf

3. Make sure you update the firmware.
4. Test using the small room demo and / or oculus world using direct mode.
5. If they work, calibrate your IPD and tracking zone using the config app and small room. I find putting the camera on the back wall and moving the desk forward allows for more wiggle room.
6. If everything is cool, switch to extended mode inside the config app. For the moment keep the monitor set to primary.
7. Not sure about AMD, but for NVIDIA cards you will need to change the orientation of the screen, so that it appears the correct way round. This can be done in the NVIDIA control panel. Whilst you are in there, create a 3d settings profile for ED and set antialiasing and triple buffering to on.
8. Lastly in the NVIDIA control panel, set the Rift refresh rate to 75 hz.
9. Ok now open up the oculus config file again and hit Ctrl , Alt and Del. in task manager, close wscrip.exe and ovservice.exe in processes.
10. If its NOT Elite Dangerous you are wanting to play at this point, you will need to set the rift now as the primary monitor. If its Elite Dangerous you want, just open the game.
11. In options / graphics make sure the refresh rate is set to 75 hz and v sync is on. Switch to oculus mode and set display to secondary monitor.
12. Once in game, lean back in your chair and hit F12 to reset the rift and avoid clipping. If you are still not happy, move your desk away from the wall and reset again. (Assuming you have the camera mounted in the wall behind the desk.)
13. Done :)

*If you are getting a message saying oculus service not available, go to your oculus folder and open the inside the services folderovrservice_x86 or x64. Then open the config.exe inside the tools folder.

Thank you, SlackR for this. I've now downloaded the Runtime and SDK..... and am just waiting.....

Thank you for this. I've been messing around with the screw thingies on the side of the rift, no idea what they do or where the best position is for them to be, so I left them both pretty central / neutral position.

My First impressions for people sat on the fence about buying a dk2:-

I was a virgin rift user when I got home from work last night. I expected the res to be fairly decent, but those pixels looked huge to me in both the demo and ED. After a while I could just read the menu's but it was a struggle.

I noticed that if your vision wasn't centered then the image would seem to start to come apart for want of a better word, the image would start to blur /ghost and the colours would come apart unless you were looking pretty much straight at it.

Inspite of this, the sense of presence I felt was incredible. I was inside that sidewinder, which felt surprisingly roomy, everything looked great. the radar, the rest of the hud elements and instruments were something to behold.

Such a difference seeing this in the rift as apposed to track ir. I chose to super cruise towards an unknown signal that was 0.171. ly away, and I was just blissfully looking out my windows gazing at the stars. Space felt like it was just outside that window. after about 10 minutes when I was travelling at 700 and something c and still 0.141 ly from my target I was rudely intercepted.

Had a nice little fight with a sidewinder that went on for about 5 minutes, before I got my ass kicked. (stock sidewinder with single laser) and I have poor piloting skills ;)

Overall my experience was extremely positive. The consumer version is going to be great. Don't rush out and buy one though if its a choice of dk2 now and cv1 later.

This is a problem with any lens-based solution I think. In order to look slightly to your left or right, you have to train yourself to physically move your head every time rather than your eyeballs. I suspect it'll just take practice. ;)

How many of the niggles do you think can be fixed by proper set up and how many are endemic to the fact that it's a DK and not a consumer version?

Anyway, thanks for the review. Whet my appetite some more why don't you... :p

Is it that bad still? I thought the higher res would make text easily readable now :(

Speaking of readable, I read a lot about 'RiftUp', which I infer means people replaced the DK1 display with a better one? Wouldn't the same be possible once the CV1 comes out and displays at CV1s resolution are available?

Anyone else having issues after extending HMD to desktop? For some reason I cant keep the setting in my NVidia Control panel for the DK2 monitor changed so that it stays set to flat/landscape, as when I check my screen resolution settings afterwards its back to portrait. Nor can I find elite, and only elite, in the 3D settings when I try to set up a profile as recommended.

Also this means that nothing works now as I dont see the main monitor through the DK2, just the extended desktop. Im using DVI connections if that makes a difference.

One thing I did notice is that if I run the world demos with the option set to Direct HMD access it works perfectly! Very very smooth with no horizontal stutter at all, which I get slightly when its extended.

yep text is easily readable now, its still pixalated though. if you are expecting regular dektop quality then you will be disappointed with this and even CV1 (even 4k will not meet that and ill be stunned if we get 4k for CV1)

Yeah, I think it's almost a sure thing that DV1 wont be 4k.

Hi
ok sorry I cant belive I am about to sound like complete noob, however if it has me confused maybe somoene else will be too at some point.

I am preparing for my rift arrival...

in the quick start guid it asks to install the SDK before hooking up the rift.

that seems simple enough, however, I have downloaded it, but i cant find any install exe. am i being really daft? if it just needs to be downloaded and not installed does it matter where it goes?

thanks

You have to install the driver runtime - this is different from the SDK even though it has "sdk" in the name .

In the downloads section on http://developer.oculusvr.com (you'll need to register to gain access if you haven't already) under Windows there should be three downloads - the driver, the SDK, and a Unity integration package.

The first download is the one you need to get it up and running.

Brief report before the floodgates opern here on the forum....

Got the rift up and running and although I had a bit of stutter and res is a bit low (hopefully I can tweak) it really is a OMG moment when you get to look around the cockpit. absolutly stunning.

Only problem is I updated the firmwear and now the DK2 is locked in a forward position and wont track or move around.

I'm hoping this will be fixed with the update today. I did download a rollercoaster sim and it was the same problem. Seems as if the FW breaks the old DK1 demos.

But OMG.:eek::eek: Worth every penny.

Sounds good. Hope you don't mind me asking - I've asked a few times and no one has answered yet:

Can you read all the menu text (and market text) without having to lean forward?
