ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

I think the biggest improvements, however, will come from an optimisation pass by frontier later down the line. Qe might need to prompt that (and other things) by raising appropriate tickets.

But they also said they'd increase the graphical quality of the game so that if you want to keep playing at the same (med, high, max) quality you won't notice an improvement because the performance gains will be eaten up by the more fancy fx.

To be honest, my readings are all over the place now...

I'm seeing little difference fps wise between high and low settings in game...
Does it require a restart to implement new graphics setting?

There no doubt that performance is taking a huge hit when running through the DK2... I hope that it is one of two things...

1. Standard Beta is optimised to the same degree as the last release...
2. The workaround is affecting performance.

With the 708 ti I am averaging 74.5 on medium settings and 70 fps on high!

Really disappointed with the performance so far from my OC'd rig

Will be playing with the NVIDIA settings today to see what can be done from our end...

EDIT* hitting 74.9 fps in station now with everything maxed out except AA which is off.

Anything in particular to which you owe the difference, or is that just from turning off AA? I believe FXAA is the only AA technique that works, so if that's FXAA taking up almost a whole millisecond to account for the difference, something's very wrong with their implementation!

No it doesn't. As I have a 7950 (until tomorrow ;)), I see obvious judder when I enable certain things, and I can see it the moment I apply the settings.

As a for instance, sat in the hanger, if I switch to LOW detail and apply, when moving my head around it's mostly smooth. If I go into the config and enable things like planet detail and apply, it remains smooth. As soon as I touch Shadows, AA or AO and apply, I get judder before I've even resumed the game.

I've not seen any existing threads about this, so I thought I'd drop a query in here for other DK2 users.

My machine has a fairly beefy setup with SLI GTX 770s, but I still find it really struggling to pull off a smooth experience with the Oculus Rift. I have to drop down absolutely everything to the lowest possible settings in order to get 75fps when out in space and even so, in a lot of docks the framerate drops down to about sixty and causes juddering - as well as in the galaxy map.

Even so much as enabling FXAA, which is just about the cheapest thing to switch on, seems to drop the framerate below 75.

Yet I've also read a few people using similar hardware get smooth results at medium and high settings, so I'm curious if anyone's found tips or tweaks that get the game to run better for them?

This surprises me. Coincidentally I was testing beta 2.02 with my crossfire HD6950's for the Dk2 which has still to arrive, and was able to get 80 fps within a station..
Have you tried removing a card? Sli also strains your processor.
I wonder how your config is build up...

Edit:
Shown by the equally divided load on my gpu's crossfire apeared to be working.
I gave feedback to saonce within a ticket about the FPS gain..

With regards to the tracking stutter, I get exactly the same thing in the configuration demo in extended mode. As soon as I switch to direct mode it's silky smooth. This is with a 780sc on a 4930k @ 4ghz.
This suggests that it's an Oculus driver problem to me, not a framerate issue. Will have to wait until they sort it out or FD add direct mode.

Same here. Direct mode is just gorgously silky smooth for me. I assume that this is what Oculus actually intend it to be like.

Does the hack display the rift image on the main monitor as well? I have a 780Ti and was getting judder on my DK1 with the res set to 1080p and the screens duplicated. As soon as I went to just displaying it on the rift I got massive improvements.

I think you're right...
Have read of similar cases stating the same....

It would be beneficial to get some concrete Data on this, but personally I'm just going to bite the bullet and wait for the pros to sort it out...

My final tests of the day were see if graphics changes require a restart to take effect and what kind of frame rate differences the general high mid low settings provide...

First off graphics changes seem to be instant as the frame rate alters accordingly.

Secondly, I am seeing a frame rate difference of around 20 - 30 fps between generic high and low settings (on monitor). This does not correspond with the data when testing in the rift ... There the fps difference doesn't seem to be as extreme.

Lastly, inside the hangar, the frame rates fluctuate pretty wildly. That must then be affected by what's coming in and out of the station?

Conclusions... The game itself is pretty unkind to the GPU at the moment under certain conditions. You can expect pretty wild fps fluctuations when playing on both the monitor and in the rift. It is asking a lot of your PC to maintain 75 fps when using the DK2.

Fixes? Obviously a low graphics settings will improve the chances of hitting the low persistence threshold, but we need to see what optimisations direct mode may enable and hope that Frontier tidy up the code enough to see the game punish the GPU less sooner rather later.

Just a quick question, sort of related question - I know there is always something new around the corner in terms of chipsets, CPUs and GPUs, but is there anything really worth hanging on for just now?

I'm fed up of my PC and am at the point of just building a new one, circa £1500 (which is probably z97, i7-4790K, 780Ti/R9-290X, re-utilising some parts of my current setup).

The gtx 880 is rumoured to be 15% faster than 780 ti and is cheaper too.... $399 iirc

That I think is coming in 3 or 4 months.

Faster and cheaper I like... 3 or 4 months though... :( That's pushing me into the "wait for more info on CV1" territory again. <Sigh> The future has too many corners!

Elite has a rift rival imo

Dcs flight sim in the rift. OMFG!!!!!

Its ev3ry bit as good as ED for the wow factor but in a different way.

Also the best news.... If you are skint after your rift purchase it is free.... Or 2 planes are anyway

Bring on the rift crown battle. Same story to get it working as in elite

TBVH, I'm really looking foward to doing some Helicopter missions in Arma3 with my DK2 when it arrives.

Had a look at DCS a while ago, some things are just perfect for the rift. ED and DCS are the best two.

Gave DCS a shot just the other day myself ^^ The plane cockpits look absolutely stunning, but dear lord the input lag and framerate, even at lowest settings, is the worst I've seen in any DK2 game so far.

My computer is not having a good week :p

Faster, Cheaper and more Efficient. GPUs are small electric heaters so efficiency is a big deal in my opinion.

IRacing is amazing in the rift, as is warthunder and (surprisingly) eurotruck simulator.
So far for me iRacing has been the best for the sheer volume of balls to the wall high octane entertainment but Elite definitely looks the best.
