ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

There are lots of issues with performance in the rift at the moment for a number of reasons... The good news is it can only get better! :p

Yes yes.
Thanks to your tips I got the basics working good enough with DK2.

It already looks and feels great and i'm happy to wait until both Oculus and Frontier implement their patches/updates to make it unbelievable.

RE:Judder

I'm giving up on fixing this, definitely not hardware related. Some of us get it, and even then not all the time. You can reduce settings as much as possible and this sorts it for some people. But according to this I'm just better of waiting (can't play anything else since experiencing Elite in VR)

This is great to hear.. I really am anticipating the new drivers because man oh man it really is hard to play anything else but the judder is killing me

Did some tests... (I5-3550 / 2*HD7950 (Sapphires VaporX - Stock - 3GB each)), Windows 8.1, latest AMD drivers (14.7CR)

1) The rift is very adverse to having more than 1 screen attached to the system. My current setup is one card connection in DP -> (active converter) -> 3 HDMI 1080p Asus 24 Inches, and the rift is connected in the card HDMI connector.

Essentially, the most stable environment is to physically disconnect 2 of the monitors, any other configuration leads to display management issues, especially as the monitors are rearranged (eyefinity - etc). For ED this often results in monitor primary switching with the attendant rift configuration in the game.

2) If using crossfire mode, 1-1 or AFR friendly, the rift loses it's camera updates (colour wash + drift) and the rift view is not resettable in game. - Also 1-1 mode makes absolutely no differences in frame rates (see below).

Some numbers:
In space (away from busy objects):
Crossfire disabled: 75FPS solid
Crossfire 1-1: 75 FPS solid
Crossfire afr: 75 FPS solid
In both crossfire modes, minor graphic and texture corruptions - tracking does not appear to use the camera and view can't be reset (no f12, Ctrl -F12)

In station (the one at Mordor)
Crossfire disabled: 50-57 FPS - Jerky, some ghosting and colour separation when moving head.
Crossfire 1-1: 50-57 FPS (no change from disabled) - Very jerky, ghosting and blurriness, and colour washed - no tracking.
Crossfire AFR: 65-70 FPS, same issues as crossfire 1-1.

Note that when crossfire is disabled that the camera is tracking properly and that CTRL-F12 will set/reset view.

Jesus, still processing. How long does it take to process. Surely you just put it into a box and hand it over to UPS.

Can anybody confirm the OR works with one eye? I have almost zero vision out of my right eye (only sees massive blur) left eye is "ok" Im not too worried about 3D type stuff just if the OR will actually work. If I can see as well as I do in real life due to my brain compensating by HEAVILY favour my left eye

The headtracking will still be fine. As you have mentioned, you're not going to get 3D - but it should be OK. I've only played with a DK1 though.

Since 3D isn't possible for you unfortunately, you could go down the much cheaper route of getting something like an EDTracker. You won't get the same immersion, but you will also be spending more than 10 times less...

If I were you, get down to Fantasticon and try both. I'm sure there will be a few (and some Track IRs) for you to see what works best for you.

Looks like soon is now sooner :)

Wow, with your position in the list, I would have thought you'd have been in the last batch, especially as you're in the UK and those deliveries seem to be quite prompt.

Happy for you that it's happening though.

Whoohoo! I've joined the Processing club!

Not sure how long it will be processing... looks like quite a few of us at once. But to be fair the top half of the list went pretty quickly so fingers crossed.

Thanks to SlackR and so many other top forum chaps us new boys shouldn't have too much trouble getting things up and running quickly... cheers guys!

Has anyone got a NVidia 680 graphics card and DK2? I'm wondering what performance I should expect. I wanted to wait for the 880 to upgrade... and probably wont be able to afford it until next year anyway.

Just checked this morning, wasn't really expecting anything as I didn't order mine till the 25th of March. Processing! YEY!!

Do they give you much indication on at least what day it should arrive? I'll need to work from home to be able to receive it.

Thanks for the info. I live in England so my chances of trying a rift are very limited. Hoping one of the showmasters LFCC conventions have one setup sometime soon.

Not sure where in England you are, but Fantasticon is in Hull....

Alternatively, if you're down South, and can wait a month or so for my DK2 to arrive, you're welcome to visit me (and also to try my EDTracker). I'm sure others on the forum would also be happy to demo who may already have their DK2s

Did you guys read the link I posted on judder and direct x 11? Might be worth trying to roll back to 9 or 10 before giving up :)

Yes, it works with only one eye - you'll just see what you see in real life.

I personally have a weak left eye so my vision is biased to the right eye. With the Rift it is just the same.

I read on another forum that there was someone with extremely limited vision (or possibly even blind) in one eye using the DK1 (and soon the DK2) who said it worked great. My understanding is that even with only one eye you get some sort of 3D vision due to slight head movements which with the Rift are replicated.

So, I say, go for it!

I too only see with one eye, I have early treated lazy eye tho meaning I have perfect vision on both eyes but can only see with one at a time.

I think that the rift will even be good for me, helping me see with both eyes.
I read about an experiment where my problem was treated with a special version of Teteris where the falling blocks were only visible on one eye and the dropped ones were only visible on the other eye, forcing the user to use both eyes. Could be interesting to try something like that.

I have a tip for OR users...

When dogfighting be sure to lean your head as you pitch and yaw. It dramatically adds to the feeling of being there and can even induce the illusion of gforces.

Great news. I had a box appear on my desk and the shipping info was still processing 2 hours after it had arrived. :D

So don't be surprised if you get it before any notifications.
