ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Well after trying a whole bunch of stuff and I have gotten over the awe of vr .....

A few thoughts.

IMO the fov is not a problem. Its not perfect but its nothing that would stop me buying.

You really need a high end PC. Truth is even on minimum. My gtx 670 even over clocked does not cut the mustard and is part of the reasons that I feel bit woozy I think even on low detail.

Pre Facebook DK2 was essentially going to be CV1. I now think I am glad Facebook kicked in the cash allowing higher res screen etc. The SDE and low resolution IMO means dk2 is not quite there. It's fine in custom made little games and maybe also for other games primarily with the rift and its limits considered from the off.... But other than elite dangerous (and even that a little bit) games such as euro truck sim and live for speed the res is still too low IMO. I find myself straining trying to read detail and its makes me tired.

I am not knocking the rift after all its a dev kit but I am inclined to echo what palmer says. Dk2 isn't really consumer ready tech.

VR is amazing but unless you are happy with buying for the geek value, if you are in any doubt what so ever IMO hold your horses and make sure you get a cv1 v early doors.

I think it is all about finding the sweet spot. And remembering to re do all the calibration stuff (IPD etc) once you have moved it. Also see my post a few pages back on calibrating colour in nvidia control panel. Fixed a lot of issues for me

Knowings one IPD should not require recalibration, methinks?

What is the sort of relationship between FPS with/without DK2? e.g. if I'm getting about 80FPS outside of the DK2, should I get 80FPS using the DK2 or does it take a sizeable performance hit when rendering in 3D?

At the moment, everything is nice and smooth when moving the ship with/without the DK2, but head tracking is pretty jerky when using the DK2.

I'm trying to work if I may need a GFX card upgrade to get the head tracking smooth - I've currently got a Radeon 7850 with 2GB RAM.

Don't think anyone has answered this one for you yet, so I'll take a stab.

At this very moment in time, expect your framerates to get cut roughly in half. I would hope that a driver update from oculus and an interation or two from frontier might get to the point where it's less of a drop, but I don't think there'll every be a 1:1 framerate ratio.

Judder is something you just have to live with if you aren't hitting 75fps. I've got an OC'd GTX 780 that'll manage 75fps almost constantly, but there are still times when I get a bit of judder.

Again, the judder is something that I think will improve when oculus and frontier get some updates out.

Couple of thoughts on the thoughts if I may? ;)

1. I think a lot of tweaking is frantically going on at the moment and the performance draining monster that is currently the Dk2 may very well calm down substantially over the next month or so :) I hope it is sooner rather than later, but I don't think it will be "soon" soon.

2. With this in mind... Having tweaked the colours, enabled SMAA and most importantly down sampled from 2560 x 1440 ... I am ALOT more impressed with the res capability and colour def of the DK2... I'd even go so far as to say its on a par with the RiftUp ... If they can get ED optimised sufficiently to run at 75 fps at 2560 p then we are in for a serious treat until CV is launched. :)

Hey SlackR, is there a post on enabled SMAA run through for elite? And you have pretty much the same spec pc as myself, how are you finding down sampling as far as performance goes inside the rift? Many thanks :)

I just finished a quick session with the DK2. It's a massive improvement over the DK1. Once FD have had a chance to work in some tweaks to include native support I think it will be a solid gaming experience. I think my first reaction to appearing in the seat of my Lakon T9 was "Oh God!". Being able to lean over the sides of the seat and see the other seats below me, and behind me to the bridge was amazing.

One minor niggle. Why did the tight wads not give us a nice case this time around? I think this unit was a little more expensive this time around too! :(

I posted a link a few pages back on the SMAA... People seem to have mixed results. As far as down sampling goes, it's not quite there in terms of rendering in real time... There's a slight blur, depending on where you are, but no worse than a DK1! I am pretty confident though that stabilisations with the SDK and optimisations in fame will make 2560 very playable with 780ti :)

Yer I downsampled just now, im surprised at how much better it looks. Very happy, it even runs pretty good too, although not as smooth as 1080. I may notch up my clocks on my Twin Fozr and up my Haswel some more lol. Watch me blow up my ship and my computer lol! :)

Getting o lot of chromatic aberration (is that the term? So halos on some text and hud elements. The worse thing though is a lot of smearing on the black areas of space. Looking through the Cobra front windscreen the bottom area is black and the top/sides are smeary grey. It looks like it corresponds to where the scratches/marks are when using a normal screen but they are just big smeary grey areas. Same effect in Hyperspace.

Anyone else see this?

I'm getting the same grey smearing on the ship windows. Did you figure out what was causing this?

Yes,

look for my post a few pages back. Deep in this thread someone posted about changing monitor settings (contrast etc) in the nVidia control panel. I followed those and quoted it in my post and the issue 100% went away!

I am getting the usual issues of some chromatic aberration, occasional black smearing (dont notice that much) and judder (ahhhh) but just to say I had my canopy shot out last night and the effect was fantastic in the dk2. The thickness of the canopy was really apparent.

I really think its gonna need a 4k screen to get masses to adopt but not necessary 4k graphics. Should be good to have an upscaler from 1080p to 4k as long as it does not add too much latency.

Goto love standing up whilst flying to see the ships bonnet and the sticker on the sidewinder chair!

So.... First impressions of an evening with a DK2.

First results are not promising, in direct mode I have a strip in the middle of my vision that judders very badly in the demo scene - I thought initially it was some kind of stereo issue, but I can still see it if I shut one eye. I can't play any of the Unity demo's as they judder like mad, and crash if I try to force dx11.

On the bright side, the World demo works fine, so I am assuming this is some kind of ghastly software bug - oh well, it's not a comsumer device...

I then jumped though all the hoops to get Elite running.

Well lets just say considering the time of night, my neighbours probably all think I am having amazing sex:D

OK, so it is pretty damn amazing! Resolution is pants tho. If you are staring at a ship in the distance though your gun sights, with the screen dooring it is like an 80's arcade game, but then I overshoot and look up to see them overhead and start yelling again:)

The DK2 proves VR is worth pursuing, and I'm sure a lot can be fixed software wise, but the resolution is a real problem for a game like Elite - and as peoples video cards are struggling to drive the DK1, 4K looks like a long way off.

Gonna cut in line (sorry)

I wonder if I can buy heat sink launchers for my PC?

Managed to get the judder down quite abit although still noticeable,
To be honest, on medium settings I can live with it, and im only running a GTX 460, only just got the PC so can't justify spending over £300 on a graphics card just yet...

The only problem I'm having at the moment is severe motion blur, if it is that.
Any slight movement from my head at the image almost ghosts/has a trail. It's like being really p!ssed and trying to play! haha

Are you enjoying yourself? You've waited long enough! :p

Yeah so much. Went into the SP scenarios and after "ooooh-ing" and "awwwww-ing" for 10 minutes, the lady of the house had to have a go. I had to try force her off 20 mins later.

Really happy so far!:D

Once Aero is turned off and your settings are set to as low as possible, any blur remaining is most likely caused by your card. Hopefully this will improve over time, but even the 780 ti blurs occasionally! So many bugs in the game and in the software at the moment affecting performance that I would hold off panicking until we see how much of a performance boost we will get when everything is optimised a little more.

The blur sounds like low persistence is off, can you double check that your refresh is 75?

Problem I suspect is that with that card he will not be hitting 75fps so low persistence will be off anyway.

It would be worth taking a screenshot after pressing ctrl f and reporting back OP
