ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Are SlackR's instructions still relevant? I was wondering if the latest sdk has fixed those "end-task" issues?

Got an email off Oculus today saying the Rift will be delivered on Monday  Will the new sdk be shipped with it or is it something I need to download from somewhere?

I used the instructions.
You need to register on OR website. Pick user name PW and a project title.
This then gives you access to the download area.

I didn't manage to get it working at all with 0.40 so waited for 0.41 to come out. With that it works, but unplayable due to head motion judder - framerate is fine, it's more like the head motion prediction is going wrong (Oculus call that timewarp). Anyway, lots of early demos are suffering from it and it seems to get cured when they get recompiled for SDK 0.4 with the direct to rift mode, so I hope that's coming to ED soon. FWIW I tend to think people with Windows 8.1 are suffering more from it (impossible to switch off Aero). I do have the rift set to primary, and I am getting 75FPS I think - lowering the graphics settings to minimum has no effect on the issue. It looks like it's going to be amazing when it's playable though, and I didn't experience any signs of sickness (unlike halflife 2 which was a barf fest even though it was smoother!) I'm not going to fiddle with settings all day, I'll just wait I think.

They haven't quite fixed them yet but they have provided a solution. When you get your rift you will need to do a few things..

1) Install the 0.4.1 SDK from their website.

2) Use the Configuration Tool to update the firmware (The latest firmware will be in the SDK folder installed at #1)

3) Use the Configuration Tool to set the Rift Display Mode to Extended

4) Use the Configuration Tool to pause the service (Tools->Advanced->Pause Service)
(Make sure to do this last as it disables the Configuration Tool)

One additional thing I had to do (Nvidia user) was to rotate the rift display to Portrait using the Nvidia Control Panel (There is a menu setting called Rotate Display)

To what purpose other than putting ED in discretion?
If you're a fan you would send a ticket including your hardware and settings used.
And you wouldn't name it like that for the public find but send the link in the ticket.
This is a Beta.

What are you talking about?

I take it that when you get that skewing, your head tracking is also not working? That skewing effect is the exact same thing I experienced when I first launched ED with the DK2. This was prior to me knowing that I needed to shut down the service processes in the background. After doing that, and relaunching the game - the skewing was resolved and headtracking / leaning worked great.

Thank you so much for responding with your experience. Sounds like the exact same issue I faced including lack of tracking. Hopefully its just a question then of stopping those services using the tool (instead of just killing the process from task manager).

Will try and persuade my friend to let me do this on his rift over the weekend and i'll report the results.

Like I have said a few times in this thread - you only need get him to update to the latest 0.4.1 SDK from the Oculus website. Oculus now provide their own pause function for the services directly using their Configuration Tool.

wut? We have people waiting, no, yearning for their rifts, and you just 'left it at work'. Mind == blown :)
 I know! I gave a demonstration to some of our scientific staff at work. They are brain researchers and are very interested in how they can adapt this technology into their experiments. It gets more use there than at home with ED. :D

I was hoping that the Dev's would try hard to de-saturate the red pixels.
I have played around with the gamma etc settings but think it needs direct intervention.

I feel that we need an additional thread to bring this to the attention of the developers. I might go so far as to suggest an additional subforum for all peripherals.
Tuning it to blue or green would raise readability significantly.

Can you not change the Colors on the DK2 over the NVidia/AMD Control Panel? I can change Color Stuff etc. on the NVidia Control Panel for my Monitors (get my DK2 an Monday).

Yes tried that but its more gamma correction, an overall change in tone which is correct already its the pure red that is over powering. When you target a subsystem and the red alignment arrows that appear they are very bright.

Green definitely would as there are more green subpixels in a pentile screen than red or blue.
