ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Getting a lot of chromatic aberration (is that the term?)...

chromatic aberration over-correction? I reckon this is something that will be addressed in the next build, and I don't fancy prodding at the code with a hex editor.

Something that might help is to try shifting the headset on your face to peer through a different part of the lens. <shrugs>

I could use a little help. I got ED up and running fine, but after going back and playing some different demos I'm having problems with tracking now.

I can't get the OVRService_x64 to force quit in the task manager. It automatically keeps reopening, and I think this is what is stopping the tracking from working on my DK2.

Could someone explain what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks

Had the DK2 for a couple of days now.
First impressions are...
Pilot body size is slightly too small in scale.
View is spectacular in the type 6.
Bit of judder in the tracking.
Using the mouse to navigate the galaxy map causes a click to desktop.

Seriously wanting to buy a DK2, but I just tried playing ED with 1080p dual screens, and even with every graphic option as low as possible, when I'm in a space station instance, I'm dropping below 75fps. Is this basically me out of luck?

(not IN the station, just in space around it...)

My system: AMD FX-8320@4.4Ghz, Patriot 8GB (2x 4GB) 1600MHz Dual Channel DDR3 Viper 3 Black Mamba, Sapphire AMD R9 280X 3Gb Vapor-X OC, OCZ Vertex 2 60Gb SSD, Logitech G930 7.1 Headphones, Logitech G700 Mouse, Logitech G510s Keyboard.

eejot much ?

You can't be bothered by the time it takes to setup a VR/headphone/HOTAS when you are about to start a 12 hour game session? wow. Just wow

My whole point was that if you used a headset it's unlikely you would be able to play for 12 hours...sigh. Casually with a monitor 12 hours is easy. You may play 12 hours when you first get your headset like a child with a new toy but a week later, it will be sitting on the desk whilst you have a quick game on the monitor.

Really trying hard to not overplay the beta but still put in 4 hrs or so over the weekend.
All in the rift and with no nausea which is nice. (My excuse is that I am testing to make sure my x55 is no longer giving ghost key presses ;).

Still loving the rift in this game and I still have zero interest on playing on a monitor now.
Even getting used to the galaxy map in vr now which is nice

Elite Dangerous has long loading times... this gives you enough time to set everything up :)

And that's your universal rule that applies to everyone?

Please, please, please stop using the word "you". YOU are annoying many people by applying your own experience with a wearable TV screens and Track IR to the experience of wearing a VR helmet with fast rotational and pixel latency. Your experience and comfort level IS NOT THE SAME as people who actually have used the Oculus for extended periods of time (see actual thread title).

You are not accurately predicting the experiences that many people have had with VR and the Oculus. Please stop telling us how we all will experience things based on your sub-par experience and narrow view of what technology is capable of. Many people put up with the wires, taking the headset off briefly to see star maps, and play for hours on end. People have tried to tell you this in many replies. Maybe do us all a favor and gain more experience and knowledge about the differences between Track IR and Oculus, read and comprehend the responses people are giving you, and stop arguing something you clearly know little about.

I think steady 75 fps is ideal but not a must. Also the DK2 is rendering 960x1080 per eye but with extra transitions compared to a flat screen - as I understand it. So less work than 2 x flat 1080p but also more. I've only got a 6950 at the moment because I'm waiting for new cards. I haven't even looked what fps I'm getting because it doesn't seem to be a problem. I think that may be because I'm less sensitive to stutter. I once worked with an old CRT connected to a test PC and one of the devs wouldn't talk to me unless I turned it off. He was sensitive, I wasn't. In the station I can tell it isn't absolutely smooth but, for me, it's fine. Regardless of your current spec I'd only get a DK2 if you are an enthusiast, i.e. not expecting a perfect experience, willing to experiment with it. A bit like the ED beta itself.

That's odd because in my experience with the DK1/DK2, I've had the opposite - I think I've been playing for about an hour, then taken off the Rift to go to the toilet/make a cup of tea, and realised that three hours have whizzed by.

And at no point have I even considered going back to using the monitors.

This doesn't make any sense.

If you have two choices, play Elite looking through a window into that world or play it through your own eyes inside that world in a very believable way, are you telling me, i am going to get bored and the novelty will wear off, so I will go back to playing on a monitor?

This is where things get a bit different from a Sony hmz and a rift. Sony hmz is like having two small screens, low fov attached to your eyes and doesn't create a believable experience. There was a reason why everyone in the vr enthusiast community slated it as, another overpriced hmz that falls short of the mark.

Oculus wraps the image around your eyes with much higher FOV and 3D depth. You should go find a demo and see for yourself.

First test with the DK2

Today I had the time to do a first test with my DK2 and Elite Dangerous. it was some fiddling neccessary, setting the Rift as a monitor instead of direct to Rift and stopping the services to get this running, since the latest version of the SDK is not yet implemented.

Nevertheless: It was a blast! I just started the training missions, selected the first one, ignored the waste containers and just happily flew around the asteroid belt, feeling like Han Solo The sense of reality and immersion is simply amazing, despite the fact that you still see pixels and the resolution could be better (some screen texts are quite unreadable, but the developers can work on that). Since this is still done with the 3.0 SDK I had some visible stutter when moving my head around the cockpit, but it was okay. Totally great is the fact that you just look to the left or the right to activate the panels for nav/comm and ship status. I always wondered how that button pushing would be solved when you cannot see the keyboard. Now I know: just look and you can use those panels. I guess there are still buttons left that have to be pressed on the keyboard, but I guess there are one or two I can remap on the X52 I use.

This is nothing short of amazing, I am really looking forward to when the new SDK is implemented. You devs do a great job.

Hi guys having some issues with game freezes at about the 2 min mark as the video here shows - https://www.youtube.com/watch?edit=vd&v=3tAxnvLotWw

Struggling to find a work around here.
Both the blue lights are active on the DK2 - anyone had similar issues ?

YouTube says that is a private video, need to change the share settings or maybe still uploading? Edit - seems fine now.

Might want to add your PC spec.

So have you played without freezing with the DK2 not attached? Is there anything odd about your internet connection?

Okay, managed to spend some quality time in ED and the rift today. It is unbelievable. Upgraded to a hauler and spent half my time looking around the cockpit. Absolutely amazing. It is running relatively smooth as well.

I do have one question though. Since using the rift (I only got it it Friday) I seem to have to wait a lot longer for instances (space stations and coming out of supercruise etc) to appear. I cannot work out if this is related to the rift or not? Logically, it would not make sense, but the problem only started when aI plugged in the DK2. Has anyone got an explanation please?
