ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Just my 2 pence, I don't think it's ever worth paying real money for pre-overclocked cards. Nothing you can't achieve yourself if you dedicate a few hours to working at it.

Very true,
I over clocked my GTX580 from 772Mhz to 900Mhz (920Mhz stable in some programs) with no prior knowledge and just copy and pasting some numbers into afterburner.

I don't know the others, or maybe my PC wake up well yesterday, but after updating everything i was having a small juttering but when I checked the FPS my surprise to find it running at 75fps in the base and 70/80fps in the ring of a planet, before I was around 50fps:S:S

That's interesting. They did say they had found a breakthrough in performance on their twitter feed a couple of weeks ago. Didn't think we'd see the fruit of it this soon though - and especially not in Extended Mode.

What GPU have you got?

Just played for a bit and didn't notice any significant difference (i7 3930k @4,4 Ghz, GTX 680 *2 SLI).
Either it depends on the system or Wolfox' PC really just had a good day.

I had to upgrade my R9 270x to an R9 290 Tri-X OC, but zomg its a thing of beauty now. High detail but for medium shadows and AmbOclusion off and I'm judder free in stations.

I had a real agog moment flying out of a station for the first time and beholding the sheer scale of everything around me. 1440p might turn out to be the sweet spot resolution wise, but the horsepower required to deliver that adequately with decent quality visuals might be a ways of yet. For now, I can more than easily cope with 1080p for the sheer wonder of the Elite universe rendered "to scale".

Now 4.2 is out, I wonder if the roadblock will now be cleared? It would be fab to get a cheeky 1.05 beta release for the weekend ;)

Doubtful, I got the impression that the 1.04 release was just quick fixes added to the 1.03 branch that they decided to release. Happy to be wrong but I'm not expecting anything Rift related till the next big release and even then nothing is set in stone that we will definitely get an update against the most recent SDK.

What GPU have you got?

MSI TF 770 2gb and a tiny 4430.

It's strange because the Oculus tool is 4.2 but it's service is switched off while playing. maybe having the Firmware updated to 2.12 helped.
But I don't believe in miracles, I will check the configuration again later, just to be sure that there is a real improvement.

Now they have a separate dev branch I hope they do a little update for us AMDer's I just want to play. Sorry test

True but the minimum overclocks are pretty safe unless you buy a very expensive card.
My GTX580DirectCUII came with a small one.
Good cooling unit on it though.

The other thing with a pre overclocked card is it's guaranteed, the minute you overclock a standard card your warranty is invalidated

naaaah.. That isnt true....... at least not any more.

for one how can they prove it? but either way most manufacturers even release overclocking software themselves.

so long as you dont start physically monkeying with the card, overclocking should not permenantly damage the card.

it will just crash, or over heat, and if it over heats it automatically dials back to protect itself.

so long as your pc is stable, everyone should overclock a little imo - certainly at least when you get to that point of feeling the need to upgrade.... always overclock before spending money imo :)

just a small note on otherwise very true post; abusing the voltage though can give you permanent damage on supply elements around the core, especially on cards with poor cooling on said parts.
I always say to ppl that it is possible, u just need to wanna do it :)
Perhaps some of my brightest examples are destroying several HSI bridges from the agp->pcie era
So im fairly cautious with today's 120C running vrms ..
