ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Screen freezes with DK2, audio/controls still seem to be working

Anyone else getting a screen freeze in the DK2 where the game seems to keep going with audio/controls seeming to work, but the video freezes up in the DK2?

Happens after a few minutes to me pretty regularly, trying to figure it out.

Crossfire AMD r9 280x, i7 4820K, 16GB, Win8.1 64bit, 0.4.2 Oculus. Have Crossfire disabled in CCC, Oculus service disabled, extended mode with primary monitor still on.

Was running great before the DK2 and before the last patch. Trying to figure out what to do next.

Graphics Card choice

I'm buying a new system, but can't make up my mind on a graphics card.
AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8350 Black Edition 4.00GHz. (overclocked to between 4.8 and 5ghz) with Corsair H100i High Performance Water Cooling.
Asus Crosshair V Formula Z m/b
Kingston HyperX 16GB (2x8GB) 2133MHz DDR3 Dual Channel.

Choices are
Inno3D iChill GTX 780 Ti DHS HerculeZ X3 Ultra
Sapphire Radeon R9 290X Vapor-X 4096MB GDDR5

I want to add a second one in a few months. anyone give an idea of the frame rates with these using an DK2.

Was hoping to get my Rift next week but they seem to have slowed down output the last 2 weeks so prob going to be october.

Have to upgrade sooner rather than later as my current system is SLIed BFG 280ocs giving 60fps at 1080 at Max settings so not going to cope with a rift, never needed to upgrade as ran everything still

SLI is no good Idea on VR because the Latency with it is higher and low Latency is very important for VR.

Frontier work on better Performance for Beta2, so it's better to wait for it. ;)

Something strange going on here.
I experience quite bad framerates with my current setup whilst using the DK2.
For testing I started up the first training mission, lowered the resolution of my primary display to 1280x1024 so I could set it to 75Hz, paused the OV-software and launched ED (on secondary monitor (being the rift) with graphical settings set to preset low.

I used HWinfo64 to monitor my CPU and GPU on the primary display and it showed me the following numbers:
SS-cpu.png

SS-gpu.png

What seems odd is that only half of the available cores are used.
Also, ED doesn't seem to use all available GPU processing power, as utilization sticks around at 75%, and doesn't even spike higher, all this while pressing the boost button and rolling the ship.

Anyone with a plausible explanation for this behaviour?

edit:
The default 'desk with light and piramid of cards' shows the same CPU behaviour. This probably has something to do with an odd and an even core sharing resources (so kind of like a physical core and a logical core, still doens't explain why they won't go all the way to 100%)

TIA

Hertog

I totally eliminated the stutter. I had 3 friends of mine to test it and they all agree. Its totally fluid now.

I just disabled aero, droped my graphics to low and disabled crossfire as it added horible latency

Disabled aero! hmm did not think of that.

Hertog - the game doesnt necessarily scale to all cpu cores so no concern there.
Your card shows 100% d3d utilization so that's also fine, total util may either include different things or it may mean your card is bottlenecked at some particular stage of its render pipeline (which is totally abnormal and usually due to drivers)

The fact that you are runing the second monitor to check things out could also be an issue as the loss of mouse focus on the game window might stop some of the redraw requests of the engine

Run a single monitor. Download for example Rivatuner, start monitoring, run the game and go outside a big station while staring at it. then you can alt+tab and see the graphs of rivatuner to see what all you stats were just a second ago.

But generally, Intel has much better performance per core, so expect a nice boost to framerate for all those nice haswells. Sorry to say it but stay away from AMD cpus for now. GPUs are awesome tho :p

Anyway your setup should run elite with dk2 on medium, with minor issues only at stations(cuz of your cpu, too many polys to sort through... This part is very optimizable so hang on to your chair and it will improve.

I've been playing ED on my DK2 a lot lately and while I know it's not magic, my brain has warped it's self into adjusting my eyes to depth in the rift much better than the first few days I used it. I can read all text in game and pop ships 2k out consistently.

I'm sure it's regressed memories of early 80's Atari 2600 coming out of the attic as a digital Ben O'bi Wan" Kenobi force flashbacks but, it's working.

Also, I did the measure in the OR config tool and it helped a ton with color separation.

How anyone can go back to playing ED on a monitor after playing extensively on the DK2 is beyond me.

Same here, but triple cripples, The Flat Screen Society, tripleholics, resolution **ores, etc will use monitors until they die. Such people for some reason feel threatened by VR and need to take to the internet and bush it.

I've sadly been unable to get my Rift to cooperate with ED. :( Been fighting with it off and on since last evening. Still haven't made a dent in getting head tracking working. Tried everything I've found online still no go. I'm really hoping one of the 10 day suprise announcements is "Here's Beta 2 with full 0.4.x Direct to Rift functionality!" :) It's not just ED either. No app that requires me to run in Extended mode can get head tracking. Only Direct to Rift is working.

what dont work for you my head traking are just the wrong way look left you look right :-( but Direct to Rift will be nice hope it get it on the final game when it out

I had a fair few issues also with the DK2 - after a lot of perseverance and some help from Nick I finally got it to work. Had to use the previous release of the SDK and firmware, select extended, pause the service in the Oculus config util , ensure I was using USB2 ports and rotate my Oculus screen in the nvidia panel to portrait.

Agree direct mode would be a lot easier and support of the SDK, perhaps in Beta 2?

I have found that the DK2 in elite and also in anything else is not as good as i thought it would be, hopefully with Beta 2 or in the finished game we wont have to jump through so many technical hoops to get it to work correctly. At this point in time i regret getting one, for me getting it to work in anything has blunted the enjoyment of it, i realise that it is all new tech and at the experimental stage though, with hindsight i think i should have waited until the finshed product comes out.

Well, as far as I know, many of the problems with juddering will be fixed with the next SDK... the fact that you have to stop the DK2 service before playing, unusable direct mode, as well as smaller head tracking and camera positioning problems, will have to be fixed by FD.

Smaller head tracking problems! I doesn't work at all on my AMD system!

I do agree with you, I think it is our selective reading, before getting OR I could only see people saying how great it is, now that I have one I can see a whole lot people saying not exactly the opposite, but not being happy and far from " I will never play on flat screen again" :)
I do love the fact you can stand and look at the cargo container being scooped, and whole lot of other things, but for me it is not ready to be the only device I will play Elite D on.

Weird, totally different experience for me. I only had some problems in the beginning to get it running, but now it's simply a blast. ED and OR are a perfect couple and once both are out of child's age, it's going to rock. I already would never play ED without my DK2. :)

Yet, I must admit, when I started with mouse+keyboard, it was tedious, but since I plugged the X52 in, I am blown away by the immersion.

Finally.

Well it was a long road but I've finally got there.

90+ fps outside the stations with 8 contacts and 65ish inside.

Two thirds debris
Textures High
Shadows Low
Bloom On
FXAA
Ambient Occ High
Planet High
Galaxy High
Light Cone Off
Lens Flare Off

...plus all the other Rift centric tweaks to monitor settings etc.

Had to water cool my rig, add 2 GTX780s and overclock it.
CPU i7-3820 @ 4.3Ghz
GPU @ 1.2GHz

With SLI on the horizon things are looking good for my Rift experience but bad for my social life. :D

Finally got it working thanks to this:

Turns out Splashtop remote desktop had replaced the "Generic PnP Monitor" driver from Microsoft.

is a DK for me it the best thing I got in a long time not for Elite but for a lot of the cinema or movie app and all the orther there are ready for diract to rift but just Maxvr and cineveo make it a good buy for me
