ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

After 3 -4 hours of play I'd say there are a number of little bugs and issues that have crept into beta 3 both in general and Rift specific.

3. When viewing the Station Services window, there are areas when looking to the left or right where the UI window dims and interactions (e.g. button presses) are no longer sent to the window. At first I thought it was the dk2 camera losing track, but there is a strange 'dead' area when looking left/right where the UI window is not active, yet look a bit further left/right and it comes back on again.

I had the same issue last night. There is a "deadzone" when looking slightly up and left or up and right when docked. Initially I also thought it was my tracking camera, but then saw it started tracking again after about 40 degrees. Like you say, the screen desaturates as if the tracking has stopped. Did you raise a ticket about this?

Yes i've raised tickets on everything i've mentioned, but it might be worth making another one on it since i found it quite hard to describe, even going as far as to give a step by step description of what to do. My worry is if there is only a single ticket and someone at Frontier doesn't quite get it or miss the nuance, they may not be able to confirm the problem. A second ticket with a different description might be helpful to give more weight to the problem.

I see something similar with Station services - if I look up/left the COMMS box becomes active, likewise up/right the INFO box. It takes the focus off Station services, could that be what you are seeing?

Been playing with beta 3.01 for the last hour or so and stuttering seems really bad everywhere. its not constant, just every few seconds it may or may not stutter for no good reason and its making difficult to play. I'm not really talking about typical loading data stutter you normally see when say traveling through supercruise its more pervasive than that. Anyone else noticing this or is it just me? So hard to know for sure as everything seems so subjective.

Mate, are you seeing it in Open or Solo? I was not seeing it in solo earlier.

Nope this was different, but it looks like B3.01 has fixed it, though I do see what you are talking about.

Sorry this is in Solo play, never tried Open play.

latest version gives me weird black ghosting of every dark object, anyone else seeing this? also how do i turn the colour down in game it looks horrid.

I noticed the black ghosting around a very distant reddish plant I think it was. I thought it was just a persisitance issue with the screen, though its odd that i've never noticed it before.

What do you mean by 'turn down colour'?

Same for me. Happens on a monitor as well, but nowhere near as noticeable. Hopefully it should be fixed soon. Up till now I have been very lucky. ED has run like a dream (most of the time). However, because of the stuttering, Beta 3 is almost unplayable. I am sure they will sort it soon.

I've only played 3.0 so far and won't have any more time to play before the weekend, but yea: I've had the same problem. I was playing in Solo mode and tried direct to rift.

Okay, been playing around with the settings quite a bit in nvidia control panel and realised I had vsync set to adaptive. Turned it on, and although not perfect, it has made a hell of a difference.

I finally was able to get past the 37.5 fps cap. I turned my quality setting to LOW, then Oculus quality slider all the way down, and voila - the FPS jumped up to 75. So this is a graphics card issue maybe...GTX 760?

With the GTX 970 and the Oculus in Extended mode I get perfect super smooth rendering when playing solo mode. In the open play it is just one major disaster at the lowest settings I get ghosting when moving head left or right. The network connectivity must be adding a lot of delays in the Rift processing. to add this ghosting. So wish the smootness from solo exists in open play.

I`ve been playing this night with the 3.02 patch and the DK2 is rock solid stable 75 FPS and no stutter at all in extended mode. I was having very bad stuttering in super cruiser before in initial version 3.00, but now is very good. I need to try in iBootis or Eranin to see how well perform.

Have you tried using the second monitor display of the rift view available in extended mode?
Full description how to enable this can be found here http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=43396. No idea if it will reflect the game colour/gamma as you see it in the rift though.

Have you check your colour settings in your graphics control panel? For example on nvidia you get an option to allow it to control colour/gamma or use custom values, that may be per monitor I don't recall off hand.

It might be worth posting your Elite\EDLaunch\Products\FORC-FDEV-D-1002\GraphicsConfiguration.xml here or maybe compare it to mine below. I will say though that I changed these values back in beta 2.06 after my ship was destroyed and everything became super bright. I got the settings from various threads on the forums here, though it seems Beta 3.0 has over-riden them.

As an aside if anyone is interested in tweaking the graphics beyond those values/settings offered within ED it looks like Elite\EDLaunch\Products\FORC-FDEV-D-1002\GraphicsConfiguration.xml has a good amount of interesting stuff to mess with. I'm quite tempted to play with the Galaxy Map settings since I still find even on lowest it to be very stuttery in the Rift. Ultimately though there may be something more fundamental wrong with the Galaxy Map in terms of getting a good performance in the DK2 that these settings alone cannot fix.

Hey NoiseCrime, thanks for the reply. I'm at work now so I'll post it when I get home today.
I have been playing with the rift in Extended Mode as my main display. If I set it as my secondary monitor it will probably get capped to my main monitor's 60Hz, right? Also, this hasn't happened before, it was just as soon as I updated to Beta 3.01 (didn't have time to try it with 3.0).

I also checked on the Nvidia control panel and the Oculus was set to 32bit color depth, but didn't check the actual gamma settings.

But yeah, now I get a lot of ghosting and a lot of crushed blacks that didn't happen until now. I believe they will fix it so I'm not too worried, but it's too bad that this happened now since during Beta 2 it was perfect.

I think they did something to improve the graphics, ok I have low setting, but I could use the second screen at 960x1080, before impossible.
