ED Background Simulation - Large Faction Influence Swing Mechanics

But one thing you can't deny is how aggressively effective these mechanics are, if it can be so effective in jameson.

I don't believe that anyone is minimizing it. The main problem, as I have said above, is not the threat of a player faction being crushed. The main problem is that this mechanic is so effective it makes all others redundant. BGS work is rendered trivial and uninteresting. It basically ends the BGS as a game - the game that has kept AEDC interested in Elite for the past 2 years. Some here are worried about the immediate impacts when they should be far more concerned with the long term viability of the BGS game.

We have been through horrible bugs/exploits before and will likely go through them again is the BGS is evolved. Despite FD's lack of comment I'm quite sure they are aware of it and working on a fix. I'm hoping that it will be introduced quickly.

Fully agreed!

But you also forget the black market element of the BGS mechanic makes communist and anarchy factions impossible to sustain against hostile players, this means that anarchies where the black markets are their own get shafted, though i believe communist factions would still have some negative factors from it.

In addition the war mechanics of it makes the war a bit pointless in terms of players using synthesis etc to remain in a warzone.

i have put up a suggestion some month ago, asking for anarchy factions not being hurt by BM tarde ---- general consensus was that anarchy factions are hard to hurt otherwise, because they have system sec to shoot.

agin, the problem with the current mechanic is imho an unintended use of game mechanics again - the only thing you can sell at an anarchies Bm are stolen goods. to have large amounts of stolen goods to sell, you need to drop another player goods without abandoning.

If an anarchy faction has risen to power it shows that the other factions neglected the system which is why anarchy took over and thusly they should be hard to shift, after all they are the primary generator of Wanted ships.

Does anyone else have any large swing mechanics they want to air out here ? because im sure there are other mechanics out there that havent been revealed.

Its terrible news.

Indeed, I don't want these mechanics, they do nothing for gameplay :(

I had hoped the beta would have addressed these issues, and some limited testing in the beta suggested a change for the better was coming, how wrong was I....

There do seem to be some variations on swings from before but the mechanics still work, more testing is still needed to understand what exactly is going on...

I think the mechanics need to be used against some much loved player factions to get attention from FD, to make a point that they can't remain!

They can't be closed off without massive, fundamental changes to the BGS design decisions. Not something a minor patch update could come close to achieving.

Well in the beta things were looking good, I do suspect some rollout of BGS changes was done there whilst it was available....we've also had some ticket responses (almost immediately after the recent release) which suggest things are in hand, so I am hopeful that it's in progress TBH

It's all server side, it aint an impossible task by any means, service process and backend DB changes yes, but not unsurmountable at all....but yeah, maybe they'll wait until 2.3 to release any BGS changes on us as for that release there's more of a chance to get test coverage from player activity which will help them

I don't think you realise how significant the changes could be, nor the tremendous impact on performance. A major release candidate like 2.3 wouldn't even cut it imo. Try 3.0, if you're lucky.

But keep hoping if you want... I don't think your boat will come though.

I do realise the efforts required, I work in this field, and deal with functional and non-funtional ESB/BPM/E2E architectural issues on a daily basis and have many years experience developing in these areas too....I think you over estimate the efforts required when you have staff on the task that have a 100% working knowledge of the technicalities

Time will tell either way, I am staying hopeful, but this is on the assumption that FD have the calibre or devs/architects that they should have....AND that they actually give two hoots about this
