Community Event / Creation ED game models for 3D printer.

So, I am getting my Pirate 3D in June and was wondering if there will be any way to get ship model files from ED to print the ships out?

Given that the Kickstarter involved some very expensive 3D models (I tihnk 400-800 GBP), I don't think they will be distributing any files soon!

I've printed some wireframes based on the original 1984 models, here's my Cobra

I don't know what format 3D printers take, but there are some awesomely modelled ships flying around the Oolite universe. Granted they are not "official" interpretations but they look damn fine.

LAWL! I'm doing them with my 3Doodler!

Glow-in-the-dark plastic it's awesome. In my little dark room at night it's just like Elite 1984...

Which is great because it is now someone else's copyright you are stealing?

That, is a slightly malformed sentence and open to misinterpretation as no one knows what kind of inflection it was meant to have. Be an optimist; I will assume you said this in a slightly camp accent because you were being joking, jovial and a bit of a silly billy......

To which the response must of course be: Ah! Mr Scot! He cannot steal that which is freely given! Still it is customary when receiving gifts to acknowledge the giver. Which I am quite sure metatheurgist will dutifully do, if something sleek and sexy with a knockout pair of heaving thrusters happens to catch his wandering eye. I'm quite sure the creator will be amenable to him snagging it and giving it a good long hard printing. It would be rude not to. :D

"Gentle folk, that which ye seek could be found here (in ye same sub-forum)" <points>,

[ART] Where to get pre-ED ship dimensions?

Inside each Model data files for Oolite it is the section lablled VERTEX that may be useful. Each vertex or corner on the craft is represented by 3 sets of numbers to 5 decimal places, representing its x,y&z coordinates, scaled in feet.

There is also a section called FACES in the same file, which uses the above info to make flat surfaces for the ship's skin.

Thanks to Cmdr Cody for helping me find this information.

“This is absurd. If he's printing them for himself and not trying to sell them, no copyrights are violated.”

Undeniably, there will be legal perils in 3D printing. The intellectual property challenges and copyright infringement complaints may soon also arise. Nevertheless, let’s focus more on the advantages that it can bring. Yes, time will come that it will only take minutes to print automobiles, furniture or even your own house. Currently, I’m working with my new pair of shoes using 3D2print's rubber-like filament. I'm sure to open doors to sell and let others resell this product, BTW.

I believe FD would only prosper from that. Its like a free advertising of Elite Dangerous. The biggest issue here is that these 3D models were bought by FD from someone else. It would be great though if game had a tool that would allow us to extract the ships we own to a specific file format that 3D printers accept so we can have nice models in our houses.

Most 3-D printers use a STL format file (stereolithography) to produce models from. Just about all 3D CAD packages SolidWorks, AutoCAD, etc can output into this format.

you mean something like this? I dont think this specifically.

- capture all geometry, textures and shaders, rendered during single frame;
- import captured geometry into 3D Studio Max or Maya;
- see what exactly has been drawn by each individual draw call;
- see renderstate, textures, vertex streams, index stream, vertex declaration, vertex and pixel shaders (including HLSL source code if available) of each individual draw call.

3D Ripper DX supports only DirectX 6.x, 8.x and 9.x applications. OpenGL, older versions of DirectX and software renderers are not supported.

Can you Ripp ship models out of ED with it? :cool:

Actually, I’m trying to mimic that cobra model of the main space ship; however, I didn’t get the proper dimension. Anyone here who has the .stl file and model data? I’m itching to 3D print this and try my newly arrived sky blue 1.75mm ABS filament.
