ED Nominated for Evolving Game BAFTA

NMS owned me for about six weeks upon launch. After that I've loaded it up from time-to-time to see what's changed, and occasionally I've played it for a week or two, but despite several updates (and good on them) it doesn't have the long-lasting appeal for me that Elite does.

This is my story as well. As I've said before, if you could take the best parts of NMS and combine them with the best parts of ED, that would be an incredible game! As it currently stands, ED is my favorite of the two games, primarily thanks to the Stellar Forge and its pseudo-realistic approach to creating a believable, immersive "simulation" of the future (unlike NMS' Saturday morning cartoon approach).

But to the topic of this thread, I feel NMS is more deserving of the "Evolving game" award, assuming they haven't already won it as someone claims.

And some like both :)
True

NMS is so much better at planetary exploration.
Thats the thing. I don't actually like NMS planetary exploration. There is something on every single planet you go to and after a whle nothing feels special.

ED's planetary exploration is nothing to write home about either, but at least it has the much better space side of things to tide it over. I think FDev missed a trick with the planetary probes, but hey.

Elite more realistic and better space "flight".
True

Both scratch different itches for me.
Yeah, I can see that some like it. Not an issue for me. I wish I did enjoy it, but I don't. I bought the game and it's gathering dust.

Personally I want someone to do a mixture of the two and I'll be happy.
I am hopeful that the next expansion will be atmospheric planets and my hope is that they add a plethora of different activities that can be done on planets too.

Then when thats done, they can start looking at adding Elite Feet of some kind. Probably a couple of years after the next expansion comes out.

Great news! Thanks to all at Frontier for all their efforts, Elite goes on and will never die! Good luck with the award!

Then again, Star Citizen brought us realistic simulated coffee - now that's (r)evolutionary!

Elite: Dangerous certainly deserves to be nominated. Even if just for managing to take two of the most boring aspects of the game (exploration and mining) and actually making them interesting.

Considering what state 1.0 was in when it launched; 3.3 is leaps and bounds ahead of where we were.

I think I agree than MNS deserves to be included in that list. However, MNS have improved their planet side gameplay where Elite has mostly focused on Spaced Based improvements. NMS hasn't focused on improving the space based side of things at all and since I don't like NMS flight model, there's not much there for me. Heck, I've got 30 hours out of MNS so I got my money's worth but I'm still playing Elite and not playing MNS.

...
Sean tweeted a cryptic message last night for the first time in a long time. Hopefully he's got something to share soon.
Fingers crossed for VR (dive straight back in) and / or orbital mechanics (prob'ly not on the cards).

...
Did they ever fill in any of the background to those abandoned fungus buildings?
Real Alastair Reynolds vibe that just seemed to peter out (don't know if it ever got finished).

Ah ok, it's a NMS thread now :p

Well, NMS was a cool game to me... Then they introduced a huge list of materials, a huge list of blue prints, a huge list of "thing" to farm other "thing".
That game is scaring me now... I wouldn't even know where to start from.
I played hundred of hours at its very first release (the one that everyone hated).
NMS still is a good game for the people that like "farming" in games. But it's not a space game to me anymore becuase there is no space, only planets and loading times... there's no gameplay in space.
To me it losts its appeal because of the arcady flight style, the lack of freedom flying through the star systems (like Star Citizen you just stare at psychedelic lights and wait) and the constant need for farming materials for anything.

But I agree that it should be mentioned in the "Evolving Game" list... I mean, I don't like it anymore but Hello Games is doing a lot of job on that game and FOR FREE TOO!

If FDEV could add some of NMS aspects in to ED, it would be terribly cool though!

Filler content.

ESO should have ED's spot.

Seriously. That game's changed big time since I first played on Xbox some years ago.

And it's becoming a much better game for it.

It was evolving once. Now it's just in stasis.

Lucky for FD that evolution is normally measured in geological time scales.

This game has evolved?

I mean, we've had some mechanics changes, and a few locations pop up outside of the bubble, but really what has evolved from a gameplay perspective?

Actually it's probably evolved more than any other game out there.
Ed is an evolution of a 30 year old game. The mechanics and gameplay have not changed that much, but the look and technology has been used to bring it bang up to date, squeezing as much out of the tech that it can.
And new gameplay features are being added constantly (for better or worse maybe) and look as if they are likely to continue into the future.

Remember sharks of today have evolved from prehistoric ones and look largely unchanged on the surface. If something works, don't go changing the basics. Swim faster than prey, have big teeth. Simple, but works.
