172.*.*.147 seems to be the source of the trouble. Even when successfully starting a game on another server I will be disconnected when jumping systems, and then see that IP on the main menu screen with the red Start button.
Starting a training mission and immediately quitting when it begins seems to force a new server connection after going back to the main menu.

Server drop while jumping combined with server unconnected is failing missions for me
OK, the server unconnected problem makes me wait for the correct server IP to pop up before I can log back in after getting dropped while jumping between systems. When I can finally get logged back in I find out I have a fine in the Federation because I failed a mission.
So .... Missions aren't playable right now because I fail them all the time and have to pay fines.

I purchased the game last week and I've only recently had a chance to get stuck in. I've experienced a lot of client lock-ups and crashes resulting in the same problem of missions being removed and a fine after re-logging, although I still have the cargo.
It's extremely frustrating, I had a 12k contract to deliver cargo 5 jumps away and the game crashed on the fourth jump !!!
My search skills have not found an answer to this but it does seem a common problem.

I did find the cause in the end, it was basically the special characters in my commanders name I had speech marks, Cam "CROW" O>
HaTcH posted something about this and I rasied a ticket, the support team suggested I rename by removed the speech marks and hey presto! it worked.
I did ask the question why the > was not an issue but didn't get a reply to that question.
I still think if I had changed any character in my name it would have resolved it as I think it was an issue with something in the account and renaming it probably reset a value somewhere.
I've left the speech marks out for now but left the > in and all seems fine.

I played for a few hours this morning and it was running good. Just stopped about 45 minutes ago.
This game is CLEARLY not ready for release. Frontier, please delay release until all the bugs and crashes are fixed. What is kind of weird, is that the game was running fine for the past week or two, but the past several days have been a DISASTER. Also, my acct was wiped clean of all money and I had to start over from 100 bucks from over 500K.

Were they? I'm on holiday this week and did little yesterday but play Elite. I got kicked off for one 20 minute period but was fine for the rest of the day.

Lol. Looking at the forums, Elite has clearly gone done so many people wrong we should use it as inspiration for country music workshop.

Had the same issue yesterday for most of the day.
Server will not connect with some unknown IP, then swaps over to the true IP after some time, can then connect, but using FD kicks me from the game, then I am locked out again...

The Beta is clearly not ready to be released as a finished game. Lets wait just over a week and see what they do have. I think it is almost certain that they have lots of functionality up their sleeves awaiting us to play on the 22nd
You ever thought that maybe they're tinkering with the servers, like minute changes that doesn't require the whole server to go down but because so many are on it puts a strain on the connection??? You ever thought that they're hard at work while you're busy sat on your butt whining? I highly doubt they're just letting the bugs go unfixed.
Sometimes it can also be your connection. So don't start saying this game is a disaster when its probably one of the best space sims out there. It's just some of you don't have the patience to realise that this is testing phase, ticket the problem, don't troll the forums and bring the atmosphere down for everyone else.
I understand your frustration, but get ahold of your net logs(read them first, the ones with "error lost connection" or a similar statement towards the end are most useful.) in your c/ directory attach them to the ticket and "hey presto" they have more insight on how to fix the problem and what the problem is.
